A woman admitted she helped her troubled, bullied 14-year-old son build a weapons cache by buying a rifle and gunpowder, but investigators still don't know if she was aware her son was planning a deadly school attack.
Michele Cossey, 46, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Montgomery County Court to one count of child endangerment. She admitted that she gave her son access to a rifle with a laser scope and gunpowder, which investigators said he was using to build grenades.
Prosecutors said her son, Dillon, came to idolize the Columbine High School shooters and was planning an attack last year on Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, which some former schoolmates attended.
Cossey, bullied over his weight, had left public school in seventh grade and was being home-schooled. Over time, violent Internet sites fueled his revenge fantasies, his defense lawyer said after his juvenile court plea.
Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Parisi said he thought purchasing the weapons was "an attempt to boost his self-esteem, and in some way help the child, as misplaced as those thoughts may have been."
Michelle Cossey's sentencing won't occur for at least three months until a psychiatric evaluation is completed. The maximum possible prison term is 3 1/2 to 7 years, but her defense attorney she could get less than a year—or even just probation—under sentencing guidelines.
Authorities did not think the school attack was imminent, but the boy did amass an arsenal—knives, swords, BB guns, the rifle and partly assembled homemade grenades—in his bedroom at his Plymouth Township home.
Police learned of the planned attack when Cossey invited a friend to join him. The friend went to police last fall.
The boy's father, Frank, sat beside his wife as she entered the plea. He had tried to buy their son a rifle in 2005, but was stymied by a prior felony conviction, which he failed to note on the application. The omission led to a house arrest sentence for lying about his criminal record. A woman admitted she helped her troubled, bullied 14-year-old son build a weapons cache by buying a rifle and gunpowder, but investiga... more -
Obesity 'raises miscarriage risk'
Women who have had a miscarriage could be at greater risk of miscarrying again if they are obese, research suggests.
A team from London's St Mary's Hospital followed the progress of 696 women whose miscarriages were classed as "unexplained" by a specialist clinic.
The team told a conference in Canada the risk of a further miscarriage was raised by 73% if the woman was obese.
However, an obesity specialist said it was potentially dangerous to try to lose weight when already pregnant.
Although the links between being obese and having problems conceiving and complications during pregnancy are well known, this study claims to be the first to look specifically at "recurrent" miscarriage, for which there is often no obvious cause.
Of the 696 women whose cases were followed, more than half were of "normal" weight, 30% were overweight, and 15% were obese, meaning they had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above.
The older the woman, the higher chance she had of having another miscarriage, but, when the figures were adjusted to account for this, obesity emerged as another possible factor.
While there was no difference in the miscarriage rates for overweight, normal and underweight women, the risk of further miscarriage increased sharply for obese women.
Foetal malformation
Winnie Lo, a clinical nurse specialist at St Mary's, who presented the research at the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology's international meeting in Montreal, said: "This is the first study to look directly at the link between BMI and recurrent miscarriage.
"It shows that obese women who experience recurrent miscarriage are at greater risk of subsequent pregnancy loss.
"All women with recurrent miscarriage should be weighed at their first consultation.
"Those who are found to be obese should be counselled regarding the benefits of weight loss."
Dr Nick Finer, an endocrinologist with an interest in obesity from Addenbrooke's Hospital near Cambridge, said that the findings were "unsurprising".
"We already know that the chances of fertility are less with increasing BMI, the risks of foetal malformation increase, alongside the risks of other adverse pregnancy outcomes."
He said that, while the reason why obesity might cause such problems was not clear, it was possible that it increased inflammation, harming the chances of a successful pregnancy.
However, he warned that crash diets during pregnancy would never be recommended as a means of increasing the chances of success.
"There are good reasons to try to lose weight before getting pregnant, but it is recommended that women do not try to do this once pregnancy is established, as it could cause problems." Women who have had a miscarriage could be at greater risk of miscarrying again if they are obese, research suggests. ... more -
Happy B-Day Mom: From 70 stories Up
Dan Sandler called his mother Thursday morning to wish her a happy birthday. Little did she know he was dangling more than 700 feet in the air waiting for firefighters to rescue him.
Sandler, 32, of Massapequa, L.I., was installing a pane of glass on the 71st floor of a 78-story building at 145 W. 56th St. when the brakes failed on the platform holding the workers up.
One end of the scaffold began to fall as Sandler and his co-worker, Tommy Florio, 42, of Queens, hit the emergency brakes to stop their descent.
The scaffold dropped to the floor below, and they dangled for about 30 minutes until firefighters came and pulled them up.
"I called my mother while we were waiting," Sandler told the Daily News. "I didn't tell her where I was, I just said 'Happy Birthday.'"
The two veteran glass workers, who work for Philip Kaplan Glass Works in Manhattan, stayed calm until help arrived.
"It was scary - I'm not going to lie," Florio said. "It definitely shook me up for a minute. But everything worked out."
The two said they also were hooked up to personal safety harnesses and even took pictures of each other with a cell phone camera as they waited to be rescued while a crowd gathered below.
Thursday's mishap follows the death of a worker in a scaffold fall at a Harlem building on Sept. 11.
"They were lucky they weren't hurt," said Buildings Department spokeswoman Kate Lindquist.
Dorien Brown, an office manager at the glass company, said the scaffold was provided by the building owner, Manhattan Tower, but maintained by another company.
Philip Kaplan has a contract with the building and has done jobs there before.
"We never had any problems at the building before," Brown said.
The Buildings Department issued violations to Philip Kaplan for failure to properly attach personal safety lines, failure to supervise rigging equipment and failure to have a daily maintenance log.
Manhattan Tower was cited for those violations as well as failure to provide documentation that the workers had been properly trained and failure to provide a designated foreman.
Both men said they'd be back at work today and had no intention of trying to find a safer job.
"I love it up there," Sandler said. "The view is amazing. It's like being on top of the world." Dan Sandler called his mother Thursday morning to wish her a happy birthday. Little did she know he was dangling more than 700 feet in... more -

Psycho Mom Also an Arsonist
Friends said Kimberly Wooten was the kind of person who would watch the church nursery on a moment's notice and beam with pride as she described her sons' accomplishments.
But they never saw the suburban mother's demons - severe mental problems that a psychiatrist said led her to set a series of fires that destroyed four homes and terrorized neighbors. She was ordered Monday to spend 13 years in prison for the blazes.
Wooten, likely wearing a wig, drove around her neighborhood, setting small fires in pine straw, grass or other vegetation, usually late in the morning or afternoon, prosecutor Robert Elam said. The last was set as she walked her dog.
All but one were put out quickly, causing minimal damage. But on March 22, 2006, Wooten set a fire that quickly spread, burning down four houses. No one was injured.
Wooten, 43, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to seven counts of second-degree arson and several other charges. Her plea meant she knew right from wrong but couldn't conform her behavior to the law.
Wooten gave no explanation for the fires but apologized in a statement read by her lawyer. The statement said she prays the people at the homes where she set the fires can find peace one day. Friends said Kimberly Wooten was the kind of person who would watch the church nursery on a moment's notice and beam with pride a... more -

Here is my Republican Congressional Representative ignoring the economy, the gas prices, inflation, food prices, jobs lost, the illegal Iraq War, the hundreds of Bush Administration lies, the loss of our liberty under the Patriot Act, the FISA debacle, the unbelievably slim vote over Habeas Corpus that clearly tells you Nazis like Thomas, Alito, Roberts and Scalia are one vote away from revisiting the Gestapo, threats about invading Iran and a gazillion other things to "CONCENTRATE" on the important things like heaping praise on Texas teachers like that old Bush 41 PR "1000 Points of Light" funny business.
Would any of you care to join me as I ROTFLMAO as I do every few days when I receive another "News"letter with such vital and pressing information. Way to go Kay Granger! You are certainly immortalizing the complete uselessness and love of corruption so prevalent in your class.

Mother's Day founder Anna Jarvis opposed to holiday's commercialism
Cleveland.com reports:
"Anna Jarvis mothered Mother's Day a century ago. To see what her baby grew into . . . oh, how it would break her heart.
Jarvis despised attempts to commercialize the "holy day" that she launched in 1908 in memory of her mother, Ann. She fought tenaciously until her death to shield Mother's Day from "the hordes of money-schemers" that were hawking flowers, cards and candy". Cleveland.com reports: ... more
