    • Canda Officials: 6th foot was a Hoak!

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — British Columbia's coroner's office is calling the discovery of a sixth floating human foot a hoax, saying it was really an animal paw stuffed inside a running shoe.

At first, Wednesday's discovery deepened the mystery surrounding the feet, all found floating along island shorelines in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver.

But the coroner's office Thursday called the latest find a hoax, saying an animal's foot had been inserted inside the shoe.

Authorities say they haven't reached any conclusions about the origin of the five human feet.

    • Fifth human foot found in Canada

A human foot has been found on a beach near the west-coast city of Vancouver. It is the fifth human foot to wash up on beaches in the area in the past year. The latest find is a left foot, whereas the other four were right feet.

Walkers spotted the body part floating in water off the suburb of Westham Island in British Columbia on Monday.

Police and coroners are trying to identify the foot and discover if it is linked to the others found in the area. All were wearing shoes and had been in the water for some time.

The previous discoveries, all right feet, were all wearing running shoes.

    • Child death probes not thorough enough

Most provincial government investigations into child deaths in B.C. are still not thorough enough and are taking too long to complete, says the representative for children and youth. And Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says that means recommendations to avoid similar deaths in the future are also being delayed as reports languish -- sometimes for longer than a year -- on officials' desks.

    • Mountain pine beetle invasion in Canada poses global warming threat

A festering problem Lloyd reported on last year -- the invasion of British Columbia's forests by voracious mountain pine beetles -- has taken a drastic turn for the worse, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. Werner Kurz of Natural Resources Canada found that the beetles are turning large tracts of forests into carbon sources -- rather than sinks -- aggravating the onset of global warming.
