    • Time's up for Chinese guide dogs

I was outraged to read today that, following the close of the Paralympics, guide dogs will no longer be allowed in all public places and on public transport, and will have to go back to the status of ordinary pet dogs. Apparently, the leniency on guide dogs was only temporarily issued for the duration of the Olympics. There is no accredited organisation for guide dogs in China, which is probably part of the problem, since no-one can say that a dog has been properly or adequately trained. There are also size issues, since in Beijing a person cannot currently own a dog taller than 35cm, which rules out many of the most suitable guide dog breeds such as golden retrievers and alsatians.

Looks like these recent allowances made for guide dogs in the capital was more to allow foreign disabled athletes to bring their dogs, and pay a sort of lip service to equality. I really hope there's going to be some serious and effective protest from the disability lobby about this.

    • Obama's Bill Burton On McCain's Lack Of Computer Use

About ten seconds into Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer's interview of Obama spokesman Bill Burton, the two start talking over each other.

The trigger is that Hemmer's got a simple, but uncomfortable question: Did Team Obama know that war injuries made it difficult for McCain to type when they put out their "he doesn't even use a computer" ad?

Burton ignore the question and just repeats "he doesn't know how to use a computer" line several times, emphasizing, "I read an interview in the New York Times and the San Francisco chronicle where he said that he was in fact learning to use a computer, but that he hasn't got the knack yet."

Hemmer asks, repeatedly and with increasing frustration, whether Burton or the Obama camp was aware about the injuries he suffered in Hanoi, and their impact on his ability to use a keyboard? Among Burton's responses: "I think that I was aware of the fact that he said he was learning to use a computer."

I suppose I should be impressed that anyone from Team Obama even bothers to appear on Fox News. But I guess this is what this election has turned to — ignore the question, recite the talking point, later, rinse, repeat until the segment is over.

    • Porn for the Blind

Porn for the Blind is a non-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States which offers sexual stimuli for blind people over the internet. Created in 2005, it has become a fast-growing phenomenon, providing an otherwise unavailable service for millions of people. The service operates through the medium of a website, Pornfortheblind.org, [CAUTION: link has sexual content] composed of a white background with a list of links to mp3 sound clips of pornographic content contributed by volunteers.

Since pornography is primarily designed for visual media, there have been few methods for the sightless to enjoy this type of entertainment. A 'translator' will watch existing clips or videos and give a play-by-play of the events. In order to maintain the feeling and mood of the program, very descriptive detail will be given to parts that enhance the mood, while other details, such as curtain color or other unimportant items, will be left out of the scene. This helps the listener follow the action, and enjoy this type of program that has been mostly unavailable to them.

    • Mother drowned disabled baby because she was ashamed

A 32-year-old mother drowned her four-year-old daughter in the bath because she was ashamed of the girl's disability, a court heard.

Joanne Hill was "ashamed and embarrassed" of her four-year-old daughter Naomi's condition and struggled to cope caring for the youngster, who suffered with cerebral palsy. Hill then murdered her daughter in a "determined and planned act" after her husband refused to allow the child to be adopted.

Mrs Hill allegedly planned the murder for the afternoon of November 26 last year knowing her husband Simon would not be home until 5.30pm. After picking up Naomi from the childminder she drove them to the family home in north Wales, poured herself a glass of wine then ran a bath.

The barrister, Mr Chambers, said: "When the bath was full she told Naomi she was having a bath, but Naomi didn't want one. The defendant carried her upstairs and undressed her. The defendant put her in the bath and drowned her by holding her head under the water for a long time until she was dead." After the killing, Mrs Hill dressed her daughter's body as if nothing was amiss and drove her around for eight hours, drinking several glasses of wine, before taking her to hospital claiming she was unconscious, the jury heard.

Mrs Hill, who denies murder but admits manslaughter, told police she had been suffering from suicidal thoughts before the killing and later suggested she was psychotic.
But Mr Chambers said: "She quite simply wanted Naomi dead."

The prosecution does not accept Hill's diminished responsibility defence. They claim she was not suffering from any mental problems and had not been "entirely honest" since she was arrested. Jurors heard how Mrs Hill had told doctors that she was hearing voices in her head but had later admitted making up the account.

      The trial continues.

    • Shujat Jafri - Struggling Artist

Shujat Jafri is a struggling artist because he is disabled by birth with a fits problem. A fit is basically a time, when the communication between the brain and body disrupts for few seconds. Usually the fits last 15 to 20 seconds and during the fits, Shujat cannot control his body at all, he can see and hear but nothing is in his control in order to move his body.

He has been learning Sculpture making and point or dot work art for last 10 years at least. Now after such a long time he has become adept in his art. He has won national and international awards and prizes in dot work paintings. Despite of his disability, he never took it as a obstruction in his learning path or every day life. He is facing this challenge with complete confidence and as a friend I admire his hard work and struggle all along his life.

He has been invited over different Television channels for interviews in Karachi, Pakistan for his achievements in his art. Local newspapers has printed his achievements story several times. I am his friend and I always encouraged him. This documentary is also a sort of encouragement for him because I want his dream to come true to become a successful artist.

I want to see him happy and prosperous and hopefully with a great wife, which he thinks is not going to happen because since he is disabled, no girl would marry him.

I don't think any of those people exists. Anyway, what is "normal"? I feel like everyone has some sort of physical, mental or emotional imperfection. Do you wear glasses? • Why do people violently attack the disabled? Does disability hate crime exist?

A handful of violent and degrading attacks on disabled people have provoked outrage among the press and public. But are they isolated cases or one end of a spectrum of intimidation and violence that many disabled people encounter?

Tom Shakespeare is an academic based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is also a person of restricted growth. He was travelling on the city's metro recently when he was verbally humiliated and intimidated by a group of schoolgirls.

Was he a victim of a disability hate crime? Mr Shakespeare thinks not, but others in his position would be less forgiving of their tormentors.
