    • Reflections of a Rare Bird: At Death's Door

By now, most people have heard of Professor Randy Pausch's famous "Last Lecture" that he gave at Carnegie-Mellon University; detailed information about it and the videos of his speech can be accessed here. However, this particular article presents another very touching and eloquent work, "At Death's Door," which also speaks to the challenge that we all will face of sustaining personal meaning and value against the backdrop of imminent mortality.

Valuable links for interested readers are included.

    • Ekizibu - a short film about midwives in Uganda

Ekizibu means 'an issue' in Swahili Luganda.

I heard the midwives say, 'it's an issue,' a lot while I was shooting this film.

This short film exposes the issues midwives deal with everyday in Uganda, including communication and transportation, electricity, clean water and lack of supplies.

From mud huts to small health centers to busy district hospitals, these midwives work on the frontline in the fight of maternal health care. In Uganda the maternal mortality rate is 1 in 16, in America it is 1 in 4000.

    • Safety for bike passengers

This is good - a lot of people get on a bike as a passenger and have no idea what they're doing. I've heard stories of passengers getting preventable injuries and unneccessarily dying... good stuff to know. • Life Passes By: 100 Drums

100 Drums is a bittersweet, nostalgic film that includes 100 persons, ages one to 100 years-old, banging or tapping on a drum. The final segments of the film serve to remind us that the greater the extent to which we are able to embrace a sense of our mortality, the more plentiful are our resources for deciding how to live in the present.

Includes the video of the documentary.

    • First-Ever Study To Link Increased Mortality To CO2 Emissions

Why states must have the power to legislate Co2 caps without interference from the EPA.//////Excerpt/////Stanford CA (SPX) Jan 04, 2008//////A Stanford scientist has spelled out for the first time the direct links between increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and increases in human mortality, using a state-of-the-art computer model of the atmosphere that incorporates scores of physical and chemical environmental processes./////The new findings, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, come to light just after the Environmental Protection Agency's recent ruling against states setting specific emission standards for this greenhouse gas based in part on the lack of data showing the link between carbon dioxide emissions and their health effects./////While it has long been known that carbon dioxide emissions contribute to climate change, the new study details how for each increase of one degree Celsius caused by carbon dioxide, the resulting air pollution would lead annually to about a thousand additional deaths and many more cases of respiratory illness and asthma in the United States, according to the paper by Mark Jacobson, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford. Worldwide, upward of 20,000 air-pollution-related deaths per year per degree Celsius may be due to this greenhouse gas.////end of excerpt.

    • San Francisco tracks biggest killers of its ethnic groups

"African Americans living in San Francisco lose more years of life to just about every possible cause of death than city residents of other racial backgrounds, and violence robs African American men of more years of life than any other cause of death." AND "...heart disease leads to the most years of life lost among Asian Americans, whites, African American women and Latino women, while HIV/AIDS steals the most years of life from Latino men." At least that is what the study says. "African Americans living in San Francisco lose more years of life to just about every possible cause of death than city residents of ... more
