Paris Ghetto Film Fest
Each year, French film director Luc Besson organizes an open air film festival in several Parisian suburbs, places which are generally considered no-go areas, where cars are set on fire and ambulances get attacked... Last year Luc Besson convinced directors at the Cannes Festival to send him a copy of their brand new movies to screen them in the suburbs. Tarantino, Brad Pitt and others agreed. The people from the suburbs were incredibly happy to have those movies screened for free on the same day as the premiere in Cannes.
Journalists covering this festival were not allowed to collect pictures of burning cars, but had to ask people about the newest cinema releases... the event was a surprisingly strong political stament comming from a commercial movie producer as well as a huge success with over 60.000 spectators.
This year, the festival is held again in a slightly modified version and it's supposed to be even bigger...VC2 producer Philip Mayrhoffer will talk to Luc Besson and spectators to cover the event. Gang life replacing family life
A leading chief constable has issued a stark warning that tribal loyalty has replaced family ties for an “almost feral” generation of angry young people.
A gang culture based on violence and drugs has become a way of life in deprived parts of many larger English cities and cannot be tackled by policing alone, she says.
Barbara Wilding, the longest-serving female chief constable, said that social breakdown was giving rise to “enormous concerns about the future of young people”. Ms Wilding, the Chief Constable of South Wales, said:“In many of our larger cities, in areas of extreme deprivation, there are almost feral groups of very angry young people.

In The Ghetto
At the center of my town is a smaller, older part of town originally known as Fry Town. This is located just down the road from my nice neighboorhood, and this place is an entity all it's own. This is where the druggies live and frequent. They have trashed the area and police/the community has not yet done anything to clean up the mess they have made. Dozens of discarded old couches lay in piles along with other big and small debris. Dilapidated and condemned trailers have been torn apart and strewn about, other trailers have been burned down, and never cleaned up afterwards.
I mean jesus! It's so sad. It has become a ghost town almost now, but a few people are still living within the trailers and houses that haven't been borded up by the cops and marked with a red "PRIVATE PROPERTY" sign.
It just doesnt look right for a town in America. It's been like this for a long, long time. I wonder what any of us can do. At the center of my town is a smaller, older part of town originally known as Fry Town. This is located just down the road from my nic... more -
Salmon and The Poor
Do people care about fish more than people in our ghetto?
I'd argue that solving the problems in the Downtown Eastside are actually easier — or at least more in our immediate control — than saving the salmon. Do people care about fish more than people in our ghetto? ... more -
