    • New girly videogames based on teen movies

Because videogames, let's be honest, have so far mostly appealed to only half the population (the one with doodles), videogame makers have long been racking their brains trying to come up with a way to attract that other half (the ones with hoo-has). It's that eternal dance of nerds trying to woo ladies and failing miserably. But now they've got a new plan that's sure to work! Video games based on girly movies like Mean Girls, Clueless, and Pretty In Pink.

Paramount is developing all of these as so-called "casual titles." We don't really know what that means (maybe our brother site Kotaku does), but we like to guess challenges include fighting all the junior girls in a hallway battle royale, running around the Valley dodging muggers and the sleazy Elton's car, and trying to do the Duckie prom dance while dodging Bolo tie projectiles. Squeeeeallll doesn't it sound fun? So much better than those games where you just indiscriminately kill people. Right?

    • Gamers abuzz with rumors about E3

Bloggers can't stop gossiping. Readers can't stop guessing. Now, after months of waiting, three big names will finally address the rumors.

Nintendo's Wii Fit was a big hit at last year's E3. What surprises will next week's show bring?

No, not Madonna, A-Rod, or Lenny Kravitz, but another big-name trio with just as much swirling drama: Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony.

The big three players of the nearly $37.5 billion video-gaming industry will reveal their newest, biggest and most secretive products in Los Angeles next week at the E3 Media and Business Summit, putting a temporary end to the industry's massive game of cat and mouse with consumers.

Each year at E3, game developers and publishers come together to unleash what they hope will become the next big thing.

E3 2007 gave birth to such hits as "Wii Fit," "Mario Kart," "Grand Theft Auto IV," "Call of Duty 4," the Slim Sony PSP and "Rock Band."

In the weeks and months before the conference, serious gamers swarm message boards, blogs and popular gaming Web sites, hoping to outguess each other about what secrets the big names might be withholding.

The industry is in on it, too. Game companies often find themselves fighting against moles at gaming stores -- and even within their own ranks -- who leak to the Internet new signs, display art for stores and memos about upcoming projects.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, the companies admit. The guessing helps build buzz for the conference and their potential products -- that is, unless consumers' hopes get too high.

"Obviously we like when consumers are having fun with our products and are communicating their enthusiasm for them," said Denise Kaigler, vice president of corporate affairs for Nintendo of America. "Through the years we have heard every possible rumor. I suppose people like to speculate, but there's nothing we can do for someone who is disappointed that their favorite unfounded rumor didn't come true."

This year is no different. All the companies have fought specific rumors -- sometimes outright denying them and other times letting the speculation build until the first press conference on Monday.

Rumors have swirled about the possibility of Microsoft introducing a wireless motion sensor device to rival the Wiimote from Nintendo. Several gaming sites also have shown photos of new signs provided by game-store workers indicating the price of the Xbox 360 will drop by $50.

Perhaps the biggest flurry of all surrounds the possibility of a new "Halo" game. Avid fans took to the Web to dissect a podcast from Bungie Studios, the developer of the "Halo" series. During an exchange at the end of the nearly 90-minute podcast, co-hosts Brian Jarrard and Luke Smith hinted a big announcement could be coming at E3.

Jarrard asked Smith if something big will happen on July 14, the day the conference kicks off.

"Somehow that's sticking in my head for some reason. Guess we'll have to see," Smith responded coyly.

Of the big gaming companies, Nintendo has perhaps kept its E3 announcements the quietest. Executives dismissed Internet gossip about a new Nintendo DS, their portable gaming system, after a photo advertisement was circulated that appeared to show the DS with a wider screen. Nintendo called rumors of a widescreen DS "purely rumor and speculation."

Nippon Ichi Software Inc. of America, a marketing company, came forward and said the difference in size on the ad was the result of editing "for effect."

    • Gamers say Bring Back the Boobs!

Fans of the Age of Conan role-player game besieged internet forums with complaints after noticing that their custom-built characters had dropped several bra sizes.

Many were angry that their previously pert avatars - which they had spent hours creating into icons of exaggerated femininity - now appeared to have "saggy" breasts.

Some players even threatened to withdraw their subscriptions to the online game, claiming that the Norwegian makers Funcom were censoring their buxom characters.

"If this isn't fixed in a reasonable amount of time, ie a day or two, I will be un-subscribing," one player, calling himself Dusk, wrote on the game's official forum.

Multi-player fantasy games like Age of Conan are particularly popular among teenage boys, but even some of the game’s female players were upset at the unannounced change.

    • Support the gamers' charity!

From the great guys over at Penny Arcade:

Since 2003, we've set up and organized Child's Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 40 hospitals worldwide. In four short years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.

That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the millions of kids that children's hospitals care for each year. So we're doing it again this year, only this time we've expanded Child's Play to more hospitals around US and the globe so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.

Child's Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff, we've set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital's list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.

We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. We are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good.

    • Sony continues to take one step forward, nine steps back

Hot on the heels of the 40GB PlayStation 3 announcement in Europe, it looks as if Sony Computer Entertainment America is getting ready to announce a similar model.A number of analysts have said that Sony would introduce a $399 version of the PS3 before Thanksgiving in order to better compete with Nintendo and Microsoft this holiday season. According to a new report in The Hollywood Reporter, which cites an industry source, the $399 PS3 will actually go on sale starting November 2.Only problem is, this model will not be backwards compatable with ANY Playstation 1 or Playstation 2 games giving you the option of playing with a mindboggling 65 Playstation 3 games only. Thanks Sony! Hot on the heels of the 40GB PlayStation 3 announcement in Europe, it looks as if Sony Computer Entertainment America is getting ready... more

    • Microsoft wants you to "GO BIG" this holiday season

Well, it looks like that rumored new Xbox 360 bundle we heard about way back in August was right on the mark, as Microsoft has now officially announced that the console will soon come bundled with both Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance at no added cost. Those freebies will find their way into both the $350 Premium console and the $450 Elite console, with each expected to be available by the end of October. That date would certainly coincide nicely with the rumored release of the budget-priced Xbox 360 Arcade console, although Microsoft apparently isn't quite ready to get official with that just yet.
