Plowed Away :: A sound piece ((headphones encouraged))
Wintertime in Montreal means snow fleet time. Some 5,000 employees in various machines zoom down thousands of streets and sidewalks to clear meters upon meters of snow every winter.
Although Montreal is known for its expertise in snow-removal management, the individuals behind this colossal task don’t get the recognition they deserve. Or do they?

The Trek stop: Bike meets vending machine
Sweet concept.
Don't have to show my biceps (ahem..) when stopping for emergency extra air at gas stations!! This is in Wisconsin, home of the Trek bike company.
(Their Carbon frames are still made in the U.S, I believe -Waterloo WI.)

Can't wait to see this in the near future.
It is nice though, here in SF there are many markets and small businesses that often have a pump near their rack area. Nice, nice.
The SFbike coalition does something similar from time to time, much luv for you!)

If you happen to be in Madison, Wisconsin during the next few weeks, check out the “Trek Stop” cycling convenience center. This test unit will be set up for a month outside of Machinery Row Bicycles. While it is in place, you can stop by anytime to put air in your tires or buy basic small items like a tube, patch kit, water bottle, energy bar, chain lube, etc, out of the vending machine.
Kudos to the Trek ID team on this project. I think it is a really cool idea, especially for commuters who might roll by before the shop is open. Hopefully the test period will go well and we will see these Trek Stops in other cities in the near future.

Ice Cream Dissapearing... Bees To Blame!
Could strawberry ice cream disappear from our lives? What about vanilla Swiss almond?
The folks at Häagen-Dazs are worried enough that they and others have mounted a campaign to halt the shocking decline of honey bees and other pollinators of strawberry plants, almond trees and the rest of the roughly 90 percent of terrestrial plant life that needs pollination.
Officials of the Oakland-based company told Congress today that more than 40 percent of its product's flavors, derived from fruits and nuts, depend on honeybees. Without bees, fruits and nuts cannot exist.
"How would our federal government respond if on out of every three cows was dying?" Maryann Frazier, a bee expert at the University of Pennsylvania, asked during testimony to the House subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture. TELEVISION > Forgotten People
Canada's CBC last week broadcast this story about one Inuit community in Puvirnituq, a village on Hudson Bay in northern Quebec's Nunavik region. Although Canada marked National Aboriginal Day on June 21, CBC's Justin Hayward filed this news story about how change has marked this community. The Inuit in the area had formerly cultivated a nomadic life now live established and rooted in small towns like Puvirnituq. Dog teams have been replaced with the skidoo or snowmobile. Cultural traditions are vulnerable to change. Young people and adolescents, having lost their cultural compass, have experimented with drugs, and suicide has soared in this remote outpost. Check out video from Hayward's broadcast on CBC about how Puvirnituq is struggling to adapt to changes in culture and community.

CURRENT MEETUP?
I have been very inspired by comments, posts, replies and messages from members of Current.com.
So, I got to thinking, what if we all met up and started, as a team, implementing some of these ideas we bang aound on the site and channel?
What about finding (possibly by zipcode) where we all are, and whereever possible, establishing meetups?
Maybe monthly, where we can discuss an agenda to actually brainstrom and IMPLEMENT real change.
We could pool all our resources and who knows what we could accomplish?? I have been very inspired by comments, posts, replies and messages from members of Current.com. ... more -

Bicycle Empowerment
Bici Centro Builds Santa Barbara’s Bicycle Culture
SANTA BARBARA, CA. Ed France, a 2005 graduate of UCSB’s Environmental Studies program who is Bici Centro’s lead mechanic, and essentially the program’s director.
France started Bici Centro as a once-a-month open bike repair shop in a back room at La Casa de la Raza, but this past December, he signed an agreement with the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition to bolster the program’s educational outreach capabilities. Now, adult and youth bicycle repair classes are open to the public, as well as volunteer-assisted open shop hours on Thursdays and Saturdays. By reaching out to the community, Bici Centro attempts to get people more interested and involved in cycling by offering bicycle resources to those who might not otherwise have them, giving those folks the empowerment to fix their own bicycles.
With a huge and growing collection of donated scrap bikes, new and used parts, and tools, Bici Centro has the resources of any bike shop, but with the option for the shop’s users to work off use of shop space with small donations or volunteer hours. A dedicated corps of volunteers made the opening of the collective possible by donating time and money to the events and educational programs before there was any official funding available.

The Search for Steve Fossett
The hunt for multimillionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who vanished in September after taking off by plane from a remote Nevada ranch, is resuming now that snow has melted in rugged mountains where he may have crashed. The searches won't match last year's extensive hunt; later this summer, two teams of volunteers plan to hike through a smaller area where Fossett, 63, was last seen.
