Isaac Hayes likely died of stroke
Isaac Hayes apparently died of a stroke, officials with the sheriff's department said Tuesday.
The deep-voiced soul singer died Sunday after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence. No autopsy was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes' family physician, Dr. David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke, sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular said Tuesday.
Deputies were among the emergency crews that responded after a 911 call, and sheriff's department detectives were looking into the death. Kraus told investigators that he had been treating Hayes, 65, for high blood pressure, Shular said.
Family members found Hayes lying on the floor of his home beside a treadmill that was still switched on.
Meanwhile, a memorial service will be Monday at Hope Presbyterian Church in Cordova from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
His family issued a statement Tuesday, saying: "While he was an iconic figure to many, to us he was husband, father and friend. We will ever miss his love, wisdom, humor and the familiar comfort of his voice."
The baldheaded crooner, who laid the groundwork for disco and whose "Theme From Shaft" won both Academy and Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He also acted in movies and provided the voice of Chef, the school cook, on the animated TV show "South Park."
He had recently finished work on the upcoming movie "Soul Men," in which he played himself. The movie stars Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday.
Hayes was hospitalized in 2006 for treatment of exhaustion, family friends said at the time. Isaac Hayes apparently died of a stroke, officials with the sheriff's department said Tuesday. ... more -

Celebrity Chef recommends Deadly Ingredient
LONDON (Reuters) - Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson has apologized after accidentally recommending a potentially deadly plant in organic salads.
The chef and TV presenter said in a magazine article that the weed henbane, also known as stinking nightshade, made an excellent addition to summertime meals.
There was plenty of it, it grew locally and was used by the ancient Greeks and the Arabs for its anesthetic properties.
Er, not quite.
Henbane, or Hyoscyamus niger, is toxic and can cause hallucinations, convulsions, vomiting and in extreme cases death.
Worrall Thompson, who was discussing his passion for organic foods, had confused the plant with another of a similar name.
The magazine "Healthy & Organic Living" printed an urgent warning: "Henbane is a very toxic plant and should never be eaten. As always, check with an expert when foraging or collecting wild plants."
Henbane, a close relative of deadly nightshade, was used by Dr Crippen to kill his wife in 1910, and is thought to have been the main ingredient in the poison Romeo took in Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet."
The chef had intended to refer to fat hen, a weed rich in vitamin C, that is edible, media reports said.
It too can be harmful because of its high level of nitrates, but cases of poisoning are rare, Garden Organic said on its website.
Worrall Thompson was reported in the media as saying the confusion had been "a bit embarrassing."
"There have been no reports of any casualties," he said.

TV chef Worrall Thompson recommends deadly weed as salad ingredient
The celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson today apologised after mistakenly recommending a potentially fatal weed as part of a healthy living regime.
In an interview in the latest issue of Healthy and Organic Living magazine, the TV cook suggested that the weed, called henbane, would make a tasty addition to salads.
Speaking from Spain, where he is on holiday, Worrall Thompson said he had confused it with the fat hen weed, which has edible leaves that can be used in salads or cooked like spinach.
Worrall Thompson's mistake went unnoticed until after the magazine had gone on sale.
The magazine's editor, Kate Collyns, sent subscribers an urgent warning saying that henbane "is a very toxic plant and should never be eaten".
