Nas-Album Review
Nas’ potential is so immense that it puts him in the uncomfortable position of living up to a level of artistic greatness that presumably doesn’t exist. Case in point, Illmatic was an unintentional classic. It came at a time when Hip Hop wasn’t begging for a savior. Nas just became its leader. There was no pressing cultural issue that demanded an icon. Nas just rolled his young sleeves up and menaced the microphone. There wasn’t enough media attention surrounding Nas to question - or demand change to - a controversial line like “When I was twelve I went to hell for snuffing Jesus” off of his guest spot on “Live at the Bar-B-Que” as there is today. There was no pressure to make a classic. And that’s how classics are made.
Since that template has been set, everyone has expected Nasir Jones to eclipse that timeless piece of work. The fact of the matter is that it will be impossible to nail it like Illmatic did. It was equal parts timing and brilliance. But Nas has been trapped under that microscope of critics and fans alike and often succumbed a bit to the pressure. It’s not Nas’ fault. It never appeared that he made Illmatic with the idea of making millions. It just happened that way.
Every piece of work since has been compared to his debut and it appeared that even Nas was uncomfortable with what he saw in the mirror. Realizing he has no peers in today’s generation of Hip Hop artists, Nas has stood alone in this industry. And it does indeed get lonely at the top. Because of that, he has created work that is more reflective of those who are artistically beneath him rather than put the blinders on and do what he does best. Each of his 7 works following Illmatic have embraced this to some capacity. Some have been critically acclaimed (Stillmatic) while others have been critically panned but commercially successful (Nastradamus). Regardless, it seemed that Nas was too conscious of what people thought rather than making what he thought was great.

This is truly historic news! Tonight at 7pm is the very first Astoria, Queens Current Meetup, to be held at the Bohemia Hall and Beer Garden.
I have no idea where any of my connections live, but if you or someone you know live in the area and wanna share a pitcher, I'm buying the first round. Look for some sort of wacky "current" banner or placard inside or out, depending on how crowded it is.
Follow the link for the details, here's the ideas I'm hoping to talk about:
* Recording discussions about stories we read on current.com.
* Video debates/local podcasts
* Collaboratively reporting on local issues that may be of interest to the current community.
* Covering local politics
* Street Interviews
* Commiserating with fellow travelers

LL Cool J Talks "Exit 13" And Staying With Def Jam?
LL Cool J has not had a platinum-selling album in nearly ten years, and he says he has himself to blame. "With all my television and film projects, the quality level of my recent albums has suffered," LL said, while speaking with Rolling Stone. "This is a record that I actually, honestly believe from the deepest part of my soul, I would buy — every record you make is not like that."
"Mr. Smith" credits his lyrical improvement to the Hollywood writer's strike, which gave him more time to focus on music. He estimates that he threw away two full albums worth of material from his original version of the forthcoming Exit 13. Fellow Queens native 50 Cent will likely lend his support, and LL says the album showcases "a whole other level of dedication, commitment, creativity." Wyclef Jean, Lil Kim, Jim Jones, KRS-One, Method Man and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora are all slated to be featured.

"Three detectives were found not guilty Friday morning on all charges in the November, 2006, shooting death of Sean Bell, who died in a hail of 50 police bullets outside a club in Jamaica, Queens.
The verdict prompted several supporters of Mr. Bell to storm out of the courtroom, and screams could be heard in the hallway moments later. The verdict comes 17 months to the day since the Nov. 25, 2006, shooting of Mr. Bell, 23, and his friends, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, outside the Club Kalua in Jamaica, Queens, hours before Mr. Bell was to be married."

What year is it? Detectives acquitted for shooting black man night before his wedd...
The detectives were found not guilty on all felony and misdemeanor charges in the November 2006 death of Sean Bell, who died in a hail of 50 police bullets outside a club in Queens.
The NYT's is doing a an hourly blog gauging the respsonse of New Yorkers. Al Sharpton is calling for peaceful protests.
Justice Arthur J. Cooperman, who delivered the verdict in State Supreme Court, said many of the prosecution’s witnesses, including Mr. Bell’s friends and the two wounded victims, were simply not believable. “At times, the testimony of those witnesses just didn’t make sense,” he said.
While his decision prompted several supporters of Mr. Bell to storm out of the courtroom, and there were a few small scuffles outside the courthouse, by late morning there no suggestions of any broader unrest around the city. Mr. Bell’s family members made no comment as they left, and they immediately drove to visit his grave at the Nassau Knolls Cemetery and Memorial Park in Port Washington.

Queensbridge Wind Power
The Queensbridge Wind Power Project presents a vision of a future when meeting energy production needs can actually enhance the beauty of a city. Queens generates half of New York City's energy, and The Queensbridge Wind Power Project investigates how clean, renewable wind power might be integrated into the landmark architecture of the Queensboro Bridge. This project is designed to engage the community in a dialogue about the potential of wind and other alternative energies in an urban setting.
A short (7 minute) video shows the origin of the project and includes interviews with Climate Scientist Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig on the effects of global warming on the New York region and Technical Designer Markus Maurette on the creation of a computer model of the bridge fitted with various wind turbine designs.
