Forbes: The world’s most powerful women
Business and political leaders on Forbes list control $26 trillion worldwide
German Chancellor Angela Merkel tops the list for the third year running.
updated 7:18 p.m. ET, Wed., Aug. 27, 2008
Hopeful signs for women: Forbes' fifth annual ranking showcases women who have beat out men for top business posts this year, including Lynn Laverty Elsenhans (No. 39), the new chief of Sunoco; Gail Kelly (No. 11), who heads Australian bank Westpac; and Jane Mendillo (No. 42), who was just named to run the $35 billion Harvard University endowment.
In total, the women ranked on this list control $26 trillion worldwide.
The tenuous state of the world economy, however, has many of the world's most powerful women in the same precarious positions as their male peers. Economic woes this year have already claimed the jobs of Patricia Russo, who headed the troubled Alcatel Lucent, and Zoe Cruz, former president of Morgan Stanley. Other highly placed women could be in jeopardy as well. Business and political leaders on Forbes list control $26 trillion worldwide ... more -
Angela Merkel - the world's most powerful woman
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named the most powerful woman in the world by 'Forbes' magazine, with Hilary Clinton only 28th on the 100-strong list.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician’s hard work was recognised by ‘Forbes’, which released its annual list of powerful female figures this week. Runner-up was American Sheila Bair, the 19th chairman of the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Third went to Inra Nooyi, head of the Pepsi company.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went down three places from 2007, securing seventh in this year’s list.
The ‘Forbes’ list included 23 politicians and 54 business women, as well as figures from the media and entertainment industries. Almost 45 per cent of those chosen live outside of the USA.
It was the American magazine’s fifth list of the most powerful women and Angela Merkel has ranked first three times now. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named the most powerful woman in the world by 'Forbes' magazine, with Hilary Clinto... more -
3 Bollywood stars rule in Forbes list of cell celebs
With India emerging as what Forbes calls 'the global capital of celebrity cell phone promotions', three Bollywood stars - Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan - figure in its list of 'Ten Celebs and Their Cells'.
'Though the practice permeates the US, Europe and East Asia, India is the global capital of celebrity cell phone promotions,' said the US business magazine, with cell phones beginning to rival cosmetics and fashion in their pursuit of celebrity star power.
India is blessed with two unique characteristics: the world's fastest-growing cellphone market and a plethora of home grown superstars, said the publication, known for its list of world's wealthy on its Forbes.com. 'That has phone makers competing to snap up the most bankable Bollywood stars, hoping their legions of fans will follow.
Motorola recently signed Abhishek Bachchan, whose celebrity stems from his own acting career - the legacy of his actor father Amitabh Bachchan and the fame of his actress wife, Aishwarya Rai. As recently as March, Bachchan had been the face of LG in India.
Samsung has actor/director Aamir Khan, whose work, the company says, mirrors its brand's 'qualities of innovation, change, discovery, self-expression and excellence in performance.' Samsung has said it is counting on Khan's popularity to help it double its market share in India this year.
Even the world's largest phone manufacturer Nokia, which abstains from celebrity marketing elsewhere in the world, has a partnership with Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan that includes TV commercials and sponsorship of Khan's cricket team.
Sony Ericsson has tennis star Maria Sharapova. Motorola has David Beckham, Danica Patrick, Wyclef Jean and Fergie. Samsung has soccer studs Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba.
And that's not counting the corps of Bollywood, Cantopop and K-pop stars the companies employ in Asia, Forbes said.
Motorola has used brand ambassadors for about two years. The celebrities 'help elevate and build credibility for the Motorola brand and products,' Forbes cited Jeremy Dale, vice president of marketing for Motorola Mobile Devices as saying. The trend is growing as more people around the world acquire cell phones - 3.5 billion and counting - and phone makers realise they need to work harder to sell their wares.
David Beckham frequently promotes Motorola's RAZR2 while competing abroad. In February, he made a pit stop in Seoul, where Motorola has struggled to unseat Korean rivals Samsung and LG. One local newspaper that covered the event noted, 'Beckham Comes to Rescue Motorola.
Not every celebrity wants to be associated with a phone, even the latest, coolest models. Some endorse phones on the sly, limiting endorsements to companies based abroad. Actor Chris Noth - of 'Sex and the City' and 'Law & Order' fame - represents LG's Secret phone in Australia, halfway around the world from his New York home, the publication said. 50 Cent Tops Forbes' Hip-Hop Cash Kings 2008 List
After last year's crown went to Jay-Z, resulting in the 50 Cent "I Get Money" (1-2-3 Remix) with Diddy on board, 50 Cent can claim himself this year as Forbes' estimated top earner in Hip Hop.
The leading financial institution estimated that 50 made $150 million over the last year, topped by his Vitamin Water deal with Coca Cola. Jay-Z fell $18 million behind Fif at $82 million, including his blockbuster Live Nation deal. Diddy rounded out the last at Number Three, coming in at $35 million, a departure from the close running of the three New York rap moguls the last two years.

Oprah Tops Forbes 'Most Powerful Celebrities' List For Second Year
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Talk show host Oprah Winfrey is the world's most powerful celebrity for the second straight year and for the fifth time ever, according to the 2008 Forbes Celebrity 100 Power List released on Wednesday.
The annual list also included two couples among its top 10. Actress Angelina Jolie came in at No. 3 and her partner Brad Pitt nabbed No. 10, while music mogul newlyweds, Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z were fourth and seventh.
Golfer Tiger Woods remained No. 2 and soccer player David Beckham was No. 5, while actor Johnny Depp took sixth. Music group The Police nabbed No. 8 after reuniting for a successful world tour and British author J.K. Rowling was No. 9 after the release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book.
"It's not surprising that Oprah Winfrey and Tiger Woods remain at the top this year -- they're certainly some of the biggest earners," said Matthew Miller of Forbes magazine.
The rankings give the most weight to earnings over the past year but also factors in such things as Internet presence, press clippings, magazine covers and mentions on TV and radio.
During the past year Winfrey made $275 million, Woods, $115 million, Knowles $80 million, Beckham $50 million, Depp $72 million, Jay-Z $82 million, and The Police $115 million.
While Jolie's earnings of $14 million and Pitt's salary of $20 million pale in comparison, the popularity of the couple, who have four children and twins on the way, and their constant presence in magazines saw their power soar.
"Had (Jolie) made a couple of millions dollars more she probably would have been close to topping the list because the number of magazine covers that she was on, the number of stories she was mentioned in, far surpassed anyone else on the list," Miller said.
And it was Beckham's move to Los Angeles with former Spice Girl wife Victoria and their three sons in a blaze of publicity that helped propel him into the top 10 for the first time.
In contrast, Rowling earned $300 million in the past 12 months, more than Winfrey, but is a reluctant celebrity.
The 2008 top 100 is made up of 20 film actors, 20 athletes, 10 musicians, 10 talk show hosts, 10 TV actors, five "tween" stars, five directors/producers, five celebrity personalities, four authors, four hip-hop impresarios, four chefs and three models.
The "tween" category, a marketing term that usually refers to an audience ages 9 to 12, is new, Forbes said, with "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus making her debut in the top 100 at No. 35 "following a sold-out concert tour, a hit 3-D movie, and a controversial photo shoot that had the press buzzing."
Among those dropping from the list are Tom Hanks, Jessica Alba, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Sandler and Scarlett Johansson, The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Jessica Simpson.
