Condoms for Catholics?
Activists have won the right to promote condoms to Catholics at World Youth Day, the Guardian reports.
Young Catholics attending World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney may find themselves swamped with offers of free condoms after legislation giving police the power to arrest anyone who "annoys" pilgrims was overturned by a court.
Activists opposed to the church's stance on contraception and abortion successfully appealed the laws, passed by the New South Wales government.
Members of the NoToPope coalition argued in a federal court challenge on Tuesday that the anti-annoyance regulations, which carry fines of $5,500, were invalid and contrary to civil liberties.
Three judges agreed, saying the measures designed to help police keep order during the six-day festivities "should not be interpreted as conferring powers that are repugnant to fundamental rights and freedoms".
University students Rachel Evans and Amber Pike, who challenged the legislation, said they and other protesters would now hand out condoms, stickers and leaflets to pilgrims. "Symbolic coat-hangers", designed to draw attention to the problem of backyard abortions, would also be distributed.
Evans said protestors wearing T-shirts with slogans such as "The Pope is Wrong – Put a Condom on" and "Pope go Homo" would picket a cross-city march due to be held on Saturday.
A victory for human rights and civil freedoms? Or another attack on an already-vulnerable Catholic church? Should young Catholics be left to practice their beliefs of contraception in peace? Surely it's an individual's choice to get either rubbered up, or up the duff?

Sidney.
... more -

Sydney brothels see boom during Pope's visit
As Sydney prepares for a visit by Pope Benedict XVI and 225,000 young pilgrims, the city's brothels are readying themselves for an expected surge in demand for sex.
"The World Council of Churches, when they had their congress in Canberra back in the 1990s, was the best business period ever", says Sydney brothel manager.
The Eros Association, Australia's adult industry group, said sex shops and brothels across Sydney are expecting "huge turnover" during World Youth Day.
"We know the kind of people who visit prostitutes and adult shops, many of them do it because of their own personal repression," Eros spokesman Robbie Swan told AFP. "And often it's because of religion. Our industry is the forbidden fruit industry."

Apple addicts camp out for Sydney store opening
Call me an old fogey, but I just don't get the concept of queuing for a store opening. Apple is tonight opening it's first store in the southern hemisphere, in Sydney - my hometown. While it is an impressive building, and all it contains is awesome in terms of technological beauty and usability, queuing overnight to be the first in just doesn't make sense to me.
The first 2500 customers through the door receive a gift - not an iPod, a Macbook, or anything remotely electronic, in fact, but a t-shirt. Woooowwww!!!
Sorry, don't get. I'll wait till the crowds die down, and then pay a visit. The shop isn't likely to be moving anywhere soon. Call me an old fogey, but I just don't get the concept of queuing for a store opening. Apple is tonight opening it's first store in th... more -

The Pope goes digital
"Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience.
The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook.
The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15.
"We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday.
Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event sites. Telstra said it plans to connect 8,000 volunteers, 2,000 clergy, 3,000 media and an anticipated 225,000 pilgrims to more than 700 locations around Sydney."
