10 wounded in wild 7-block shooting spree in Harlem
"Detectives swarmed Harlem today after a bloody night left 10 people wounded — leading frightened residents to call on the NYPD to do more to get illegal guns off the streets.
Six people were wounded during a wild shooting spree near a Memorial Day barbecue last night at Marcus Garvey Park.
All six of his victims — including a 13-year-old boy hit in the thigh and a 15-year-old girl grazed in the forehead — were expected to survive. But several victims remained in guarded condition at area hospitals." Six teens among eight gunned down in Harlem
A string of shootings in a New York City neighborhood sent eight people, including half a dozen teenagers, to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds.
All of the victims were expected to recover from their injuries.
The six teens were found near Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park, where a crowd had gathered.
It was not immediately clear whether they were wounded at the park or as they fled when gunfire erupted about 10:15 p.m. Monday.
The victims -- between the ages of 13 and 18 -- were found on several blocks along Lenox Avenue, from 125th Street to 128th Street.
They had been shot in the chest, thigh, torso, abdomen or foot, police said. A 15-year-old girl had been grazed on the forehead. No arrests had been made.

Yesteryear’s New York: The Belly of the Beast
During the 1970s and 80s, an adventurous blonde named Jill Freedman with a quick eye for the unusual and bizarre focussed her camera upon the spirited characters and gritty sidewalks of a now-bygone era in New York City life. This modernist documentarian was a self-taught photographer who captured raw, intimate images in black and white, transforming urban scenes into theatrical dramas.
Freedman’s portrait of New York reflected a fallen city that was strewn with piles of garbage. Prostitutes and bag ladies walked the streets, while junkies staked out abandoned tenements next to children playing in vacant lots. For reasons involving both a shift in photographic styles and her own declining personal circumstances, Ms. Freedman faded from the popular scene in the late 1980s. But today, at a moment when much of Manhattan is awash in money and glamour, Freedman’s photographic legacy offers us a vivid portrait of a metropolis once defined by violence, poverty and disarray, a New York that once was.
Photographs, a video and photo-gallery are included. During the 1970s and 80s, an adventurous blonde named Jill Freedman with a quick eye for the unusual and bizarre focussed her camera u... more -

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - "On the Shoulders of Giants"
Great article from today's LA Times about one of the greatest NBA players of all-time that has very little to do with his Hall of Fame career, and everything to do with his depth and character.
The leading scorer in the history of the National Basketball Assn. has become a leading historian and author. His sixth book, "On the Shoulders of Giants," is his most recent journey into the past of black America. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar now pursues his heritage with the same fervor he once pursued scoring records.
"I played basketball for 40 years of my life," he says, "but it never defined me."
Already, "On the Shoulders of Giants" has gone a long way toward doing that.
It is a book about the Harlem Rens, a black basketball team of the 1930s that Abdul-Jabbar uses to open a window to black America of the day. Great article from today's LA Times about one of the greatest NBA players of all-time that has very little to do with his Hall of Fame... more -
