    • Country Fast Facts: Nicaragua

The Pacific coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century.

Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838.

Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades.

Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979.

Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s.

Free elections in 1990, 1996, and 2001, saw the Sandinistas defeated, but voting in 2006 announced the return of former Sandinista President Daniel Ortega Saavedra.

Nicaragua's infrastructure and economy - hard hit by the earlier civil war and by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 - are slowly being rebuilt.

    • Thousands of Nicaraguan Children Get Name, Identity

Some 250,000 indigenous children and adolescents who had no legal identity in Nicaragua are in the process of being registered -- an essential step towards achieving recognition of their basic human rights.

This was achieved by the "Right to a Name and Nationality" program run by Save the Children, Plan International, UNICEF (the United Nations children's fund), Nicaragua's Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), and regional and municipal authorities.

"A person who is not registered has no last name and not even a first name, because rural families and society call children whatever they want, which means children grow up without even having their own name," UNICEF official Hugo Rodríguez, a consultant for the programme, told IPS.

Five years ago, human rights groups and universities in Nicaragua expressed concern about the fact that around 500,000 youngsters in indigenous communities in the eastern North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) and the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS) had no birth certificates.

An investigation indicated that nearly 40 percent of children in Nicaragua are not legally registered and thus do not figure in the country's demographic statistics, said Rodríguez, a statistician.

In indigenous areas on the Atlantic coast and in central and northern Nicaragua, researchers found native communities where 100 percent of the children and adolescents, and a portion of the adults, had never been inscribed in the civil register.

These findings led to the start of a mission that has registered 97,000 children and teenagers in the RAAN, out of 100,000 minors without a legal identity, in the past four and a half years.

The efforts expanded this year to the RAAS, where the goal is to register 100,000 youngsters, and to the province of Nueva Guinea, south of that area, where about 50,000 minors have no birth certificates.

    • Cockfight in Nicaragua

I would like to warn viewers that this pod contains disturbing images

Before jumping and condeming what is obviously a passion to many people around the world i felt the need to experience it first hand before forming an opinion. Hence I have come to the conclusion that although the intention is genuinely not for the chicken die and the owners do actually have some affection for their prize-fighters (e.g. When one man was giving his chicken CPR), it was still too much for me to handle.Having been to a Bullfight and admired not the killing but the matadors bravery and enjoyed the experience I found myself unable to enjoy the spectacle since the chickens are forced to fight with no alternative and the result is always a frightened animal in danger, as opposed to a Bullfight where there is the prospect of human risk.

    • NICARAGUA: A DYING GENERATION

Nicaragua's decision to ban all types of abortion including those medically necessary to save a woman's life, has had deep ramifications according to human rights groups in the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Since the ban was implemented in 2006, 82 women have died because they did not receive a life saving abortion. Some doctors have even denied medical services to pregnant women for fear that the possibility of an aborted pregnancy could lead to their incarceration. Nicaragua's decision to ban all types of abortion including those medically necessary to save a woman's life, has had deep r... more

    • NICARAGUA: A DYING GENERATION

The aftermath of Nicaragua's decision to outlaw abortion has shaken this tiny Central American society to the core. Last year Nicaragua, a poor country mired in civil war for much of the 1980´s outlawed all forms of abortion, including operations to save a pregnant woman's life, after a campaign by the Catholic church. The law also established jail sentences of six to thirty years for women who terminate their pregnancies and doctors who perform the procedure. As a result the deaths of women who have undergone "back alley abortions" have skyrocketed infuriating human and women's rights groups all over the world. It is somewhat ironic that the Nicaragua´s newly elected leftist government approved the law. However this was largely due to their attempts to appease the powerful Catholic church in exchange for the church´s support for their anti-poverty measures. The Underground intends to film in the barrios of Managua and record interviews with the families of victims as well as mothers-to-be who are too poor to afford a newborn, human rights groups, representatives of the Catholic Church, and government officials.

The Underground is currently in pre-production to go to Nicaragua April 6th and begin this documentary pod with the help of Human Rights Watch, an independent, nongovernmental organization, supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide. We ask that current, EMI and Saul Williams consider scoring this pod in conjunction with Theme 2: Mother Hood: The Urban Family.

    • Cocaine and Lobster

As the number of lobsters decline, divers on the Miskito Coast are forced to dive deeper. Many have been crippled or killed. And as the region's traditional economy begins to run dry, some are turning to an even riskier shadow economy, known locally as the "white lobster".
Current TV's Mariana van Zeller travels to this remote corner of Nicaragua to examine some very visible effects of overfishing and dwindling ocean resources.

    • Miskito Indians Vent Anger Over Felix

Mariana van Zeller and I were on the Miskito Coast back in March shooting Diving Too Deep and Fishing for Blow. I can only imagine what a Hurricane of this magnitude would do to the region. According to the AP report, residents say that the Nicaraguan authorities only sent out evacuation warnings after many lobster divers were already out to sea and others were trapped out on cayes, like the one featured in Diving Too Deep. Felix also destroyed crops, boats and drinking water that many of these isolated depend on for survival.
