Scarf's Offensive In Dunkin Donuts Ad
Poor Rachel Ray...
Dunkin’ Donuts abruptly pulled an ad featuring its pitch woman Rachael Ray after a conservative commentator wrote that the scarf Ray wore in the ad looked like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.
“The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad," Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin wrote in her syndicated column.
What are your thoughts? Poor Rachel Ray... ... more -
Jews sheltered by Muslims during WW 2 honoured
Albanian Muslims from Waterbury's Albanian-American community were guests of honour at a Jewish Holocaust rememberance program (Yom HaShoah). This event told the stories from the rescuers and the rescued.
Dr. Anna Kohen, representing the rescued, was born in Albania (a Muslim majority country)and after Hitler invaded Albania, her parents fled to hide in a Muslim village.
"Everyone in the village knew we were Jews," she said, "but no one betrayed us. What I remember is what my parents told me: They were very nice to us, they fed us, they saved us.
Sazan Hoxha, representing one of the rescuers, told about her father who sheltered 4 Jewish families.
"Our parents were devout Muslims and believed, as we do, that 'every knock on the door is a blessing from God,'" said her brothers Hamid and Xhema Veseli. "We never took any money from our Jewish guests. All persons are from God. Besa exists in every Albanian soul."
"Our home is first God's house, second our guest's house, and third our family's house," explained Drita Veseli. "The Koran teaches us that all people, Jews, Christians, Muslims, are under one God."
Its stories like these which give us reason for hope... peace is possible. Albanian Muslims from Waterbury's Albanian-American community were guests of honour at a Jewish Holocaust rememberance program (Yom Ha... more -
On its 60th birthday, Israel is still a Jekyll and Hyde nation
Ordinary Israelis and Palestinians are learning to put their enmity behind them and live together. Can the politicians catch up? When the politicians fail, it’s left to real people to try to make peace.
This is an excellent article.
If you want to get a good perspective of the situation there, give this a thoughtful read. I think if we leave the politicians out of it, we'll have a sincere, heart to heart peace in the Mideast. There's already much publicized corruption coming from inside the Israeli government, corruption that stinks of greed and power.
Yes, it is up to the people to try to make peace. Take the political element out of this. The people have the power. In a democratic society, the majority wins. Ordinary Israelis and Palestinians are learning to put their enmity behind them and live together. Can the politicians catch up? When ... more -

Jewish guy says Iranian Islamic revolution a good thing!
A Jewish man says the Islamic revolution is a good thing that happened to Iran as people living in a religious environment become more religious.
Despite Iran's presidents views of Israel and the Holocaust (which was opposed by many Iranian politicians), Iran has the largest Jewish community outside of Israel who live peacefully side by side with Muslims who are free to practise Judaism. Despite what most people in the west think in Iran there are verticially no cases of Anti-semitic violence cases like the kind that are heard about in some parts of Europe.
Iran has its own Jewish member of its parliament. Iran even has one of the worlds 4 Jewish charity hospitals where Jews and Muslims both work together, which even the government has donated towards!
While everything may not be perfect in Iran... this documentary certainly shows a beacon of hope. A Jewish man says the Islamic revolution is a good thing that happened to Iran as people living in a religious environment become more... more -
Jews of Iran are not celebrating Israel's anniversary
Iranian Jews are not celebrating Israel's 60th anniversary. Why?...
because as a Iranian Jewish leader Morsadegh put it, it was in protest of Israel's responsibility for the "murder of totally innocent Palestinian civilians." and also said Israel's policies toward Palestinians, particularly Gazans, demonstrated "anti-human behavior ... they kill innocent people."
Iran has the largest Jewish community in the M.E. outside of Israel where relations between Muslims and Jews is generally peaceful despite what most in the West think and it even has a Jewish member in the Iranian parliament! Iran even has its own Jewish charity hospital where Muslims and Jews work together.
The Jewish leader then went on to say that Jews enjoy freedom of religion in Iran as demonstrated in Austraila's SBS current affairs show "Dateline" on 'The Jews of Iran'

Hand in hand - Israeli and Arab children learn together
In Israel today, Jewish and Arab citizens live in a highly segregated environment, often in closely adjoining areas and in many regions throughout the state of Israel. In the most recent census of Israeli citizens, 20% are Arab and 80% are Jewish. Today there are few opportunities for meaningful and deep interaction between members of these two major groups, especially in the fields of elementary and secondary education, which are almost entirely segregated.
In 1997, Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education is Israel was founded to build peace between Jews and Arabs in Israel through development of bilingual and multi-cultural schools. Elementary schools were founded in Jerusalem and in the Galilee region of Israel; in 2004 a third school was opened in Wadi Ara. In September 2007, the fourth Hand in Hand school through the parents's group Hagar opened in Beersheva. Under the unique Hand in Hand Education model, each school is co-directed by Arab and Jewish co-Principals; and each classroom is co-taught by Jewish and Arab teachers. Students at each grade level are balanced between Arab and Jewish children. Students at all grade levels are taught in both Hebrew and Arabic, learning to treasure their own culture and language while understanding the difference of others around them.---

Heavy Metal in Baghdad
This film featured at SXSW in Austin, Texas, March 12th, and once again on MARCH 15th!
I'm curious to know how Texans' perceptions of Iraqis (or Arabs in general) may have changed after seeing them with Metallica shirts and Iron Maiden cd's, banging on drums and moshing together like a good ol' mullet rally in a heavy metal parking lot!

How Qatar Helped Katrina Victims
"In the wake of the hurricane, which hit the north-central Gulf coast in August of 2005, the State of Qatar was among the first countries to commit financial support to the victims of the storm. Almost immediately after the damage was assessed, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, pledged $100 million toward the rebuilding of New Orleans, Mississippi, and other areas destroyed by the hurricane. One month later, in September of 2005, the Qatar Katrina Fund was formed.
The Fund provides direct assistance to the victims of the storm in the form of student scholarships, health care, and the construction of homes and community centers, among other things. "We Are All Witnesses" includes a detailed report of gifts given, along with a complete list and description of the organizations and programs that received contributions. Several universities, medical centers, and non-profit organizations were included on the list, as well as housing projects like Habitat for Humanity." Good fences make good neighbors
Jews and Arabs come together to protest a wall created by Israel dividing the village of Jabel Mukaber and Sheikh Sa’ed. Residents of Sheikh Sa'ed were cut off from their own families, beloved neighbors, and places where they work.
Rabbis for Human Rights joined in on the protest and helped the Arab residents take the army to court and won! The army is now appealing it to Israel's Supreme Court. This Land
Lakota Indian Nation secede from the United States by declaring themselves as a sovereign nation on December 20, 2007, and may pose as our own "Gaza/West Bank" issue with threats of liens against property ownership within the declared territories of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana.
Although it may be argued that those said properties are illegal in the first place, those homesteaders may have to give up their own generational settlements. If we, as Americans, support their declaration and aid in a peaceful process of helping transition their newly declared sovereignty, we can set an example as to how we participate in foreign relations by first fixing our own mistakes here at home.
Furthermore, it will be interesting to follow their own policies with Relations, Environment, and Trade. This is truly exciting and deserve further thought and discussion amongst all Americans and international communities in solidarity alike. Fat Chance For Peace
This movie by Yael Luttwack came out last year and was featured in Tribeca but I just caught it last night during a BBC News show and was so impressed to know that there are people like her bridging the gap between Arabs and Jews in a peaceful, educational, and heart-warming way. This work, although idealistic in a broader sense, is tangible and effective in the grassroots and I wish there were more of this. Please google the movie "A Slim Peace."
"Body language says it all at the first meeting of a diet support group composed of highly educated Palestinians, secular and religious Jews, and Bedouins: the discomfort is tangible as women who would never even look at each other are forced to confront their fears of the other. Getting settlers to sit down with Ramallah residents was Luttwak's biggest challenge, but over the course of six sessions, the women not only lose weight but bridge their ingrained mistrust, highlighting just how geopolitics artificially narrows perspectives and sows seeds of hatred. Though the outcome one year later is less than hoped for, the applications are huge." (Variety, June 4, 2007)

Oil For Peace
"Peace Oil® is produced in Israel by Jews, Arabs, Druze and Bedouin working together.
An initiative of registered UK charity the Charities Advisory Trust, Peace Oil® encourages co-operation between communities. By helping to market their produce it hopes to bring economic prosperity to such enterprises, encouraging others to follow their example." (site cite).
I was thrilled to hear about this. First, it offers an alternative to the widely conceived notion that Jews and Arabs can't work together. Second, prosperity projects like this one can aid in future reconciliation between those neighbors whose lives are interrupted by political quagmire. Third, I love cooking and would rather support companies such as this one to encourage peace and prosperity for all.
How does it taste? I have no idea. But it's a great idea. It's a long road to peace but why not start at the dinner table? "Peace Oil® is produced in Israel by Jews, Arabs, Druze and Bedouin working together. ... more -
Arab education 'falling behind'
The World Bank says that the quality of education in the Arab states is falling behind other regions. If they they are to tackle unemployment, urgent reform is needed.
The region has not seen the increase in literacy and school enrollment witnessed in Asia and Latin America. Further, Dijibouti, Yemen, Iraq, and Morocco were ranked as the worst education reformers.
I wonder if war going on in some of the countries is partly to blame? The World Bank says that the quality of education in the Arab states is falling behind other regions. If they they are to tackle unem... more -
How Can Democratic Nations Allow Innocent People To be Deprived of Medicine, Food ...
This doesn't make ANY sense at all. I guess bombing and killing innocent lives in Lebanon was a little too expensive and just blocking supplies kills with little expense. Wake up world and find a better solution to war and murder of innocent people. Not ALL those people are responsible for what is happening and just "Getting Back" for whatever makes matters worse. War has NEVER brought peace. It only brings money to the greedy rich, greedy corporations and greedy politicians. Blood money.
