Burma embassy takes holiday
I honestly can't believe this.
Western aid experts in Bangkok will reportedly have to wait at least another 4 days to be able to get into Burma with their aid, because the Burmese embassy in Bangkok has closed for a local holiday!
Apparently none of the urgent visas will be processed until Monday or Tuesday, something that the UN WFP aren't best pleased about:
"This is too long to wait for people whose lives are at such a precarious balance."

Tibetan protesters defy police crackdown in western China
Around 2,000 police officers will guard the Olympic torch flame as it travels through the Thai capital today. Police vans will also ride alongside the procession in case the torch carriers need to jump inside for safety. More protests have broken out in western China today, defying the heavy-handed security presence. Activist groups and locals said that police had beaten and detained monks and others who were calling for the release of protesters held after demonstrations last month.
The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy - based in north India, at the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile - claimed that more than 100 lamas, and others from Tongren were detained on Thursday. Protests are thought to have broken out in Tongren in February, a month before the riots in Lhasa. They reignited on March 16 as protests spread across Tibetan areas following the actions of about 100 monks who climbed a hillside above the monastery, burned incense and set off fireworks, while riot police assembled outside.
Yesterday, Yasuo Fukuda, Japan's prime minister, urged the Chinese foreign minister, Yang Jiechi - who was on a visit to Tokyo - to start a dialogue with Tibetans and to be more open about the crackdown. Yang said Tibet was a domestic matter. A major Japanese Buddhist temple also withdrew from hosting the Olympic torch relay next week, citing both safety concerns and sympathy. One of its officials, Shinsho Wakaomi, told a press conference: "Zenkoji is a Buddhist temple. Naturally, we are concerned about Tibet."
Samak Sundaravej, the prime minister, said protesters had no reason to disrupt the relay. Officials warned that any foreign activists would be deported. A coalition of human rights groups and other activists have said they will protest outside the UN headquarters in Bangkok. Climate talks seek Kyoto successor
Representatives from 163 countries have opened a week of UN-led talks in Bangkok aimed at drawing up a new agreement to fight global warming to be signed next year. December's breakthrough global warming conference in Bali was the last such meeting. A key focus will be finding a solution to the conflict of interests in developing nations and emissions curbs richer nations are urging them to take up. The talks are designed to replace the 1997 Kyoto global warming pact after its first phase expires in 2012. The US was the main opponent of the Kyoto Protocol and has remained skeptical about the terms outlined at last year's Bali meeting. Somewhat frustratingly, no major decisions are likely to be made in the Bangkok talks, as they're intended mainly to establish a timetable for more rounds of talks, culminating in the signing of a new treaty at a UN climate change conference in Copenhagen at the end of next year. A "No Body" Murder.
Just before Christmas of 1996, Luis Osvaldo Diego Garcia disappeared from work under mysterious circumstances. The case sat dormant until 2004, when after further investigation a judge ruled that there was overwhelming circumstancial evidence to show that Luis had been murdered by his employer. The employer, Woravit "Kim" Mektrakarn fled to Bangkok, Thailand where he is believed to be living today. Although, there are arrest warrants for Mektrakarn in the United States and Thailand, he has yet to be arrested.
Luis body has never been found. His death is presumed, based on blood evidence and DNA. His remains may be somewhere between Los Angeles, CA and Las Vegas, NV, or may have been shipped to Thailand.
In this pod, Luis sister, Elizenda Diego Garcia, shares her thoughts of Luis, and her family's hopes for the recovery of his remains and his killer's arrest. A "No Body" Murder. ... more -
