    • Wolf: The coup is now!

Naomi Wolf warns us that the coup occurred on October 1, 2008 when the first brigade was brought to the United States from Iraq to turn their arms on us, the American citizens. 4000 troups are now under the direct control of George W. Bush. Their standing mission is to break up unrully mobs. This is just the beginning. Wolf's call to action is urgent. We are in an emergency. If we do not act now by insisting on the arrest of G.W. Bush and his cronies, we will suffer the end of democracy.

This video is a must see. Watch it, and pass it on. Act today.

Wolf references this video: Rep. Brad Sherman – threat of martial law (48 seconds)

    • Bush regime seeks ownership stakes in banks

Oh my, what has Congress done? Did they even read this bill? Did Obama and McCain? This is just like the Patriot Act where this government got everyone in a frenzy after 9.11 and that fascist piece of legislation that takes away our civil liberties was not even read before it was passed! This article claims the Bush regime is considering taking ownership stakes in banks with the "powers" provided to the Treasury Dept by this so called "rescue" bill that is really a bailout bill and a way to take away your freedom. And Sen. Chuck Schumer applauds it! I truly believe this Republic is now dead. People are either so panicked, apathetic, and honestly so plain stupid or politically partisan in how this all works that they cannot even see the powerplay happening right before their eyes. This government owns you lock stock and barrel now. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his grave!

And I have to ask this question as well: Where is Al Gore in all of this? The man who spoke so passionately and eloquently as if he were the reincarnation of Thomas Jefferson about the threat the Patriot Act was to our liberties. This is the time for men and women with that sense of love of country to come forward and speak out against this. But I suppose since he endorsed Barack Obama who is now part of this takeover of our country, it would look hypocritical of him to come out and speak against it as well as Obama's love of 'clean coal'... so much for being a free man not tied to politics being able to speak your mind. Thankfully, we have men like Dennis Kucinich who will do so.

I am appalled at this obvious behind the back powerplay by this government to take advantage of our misery to take away the last vestige of freedom that remains in this country besides the Internet, which I am certain they will have as well one day and already do with their spying. The free market will be no more as our civil liberties blow away in the crumbling dust of this Republic, and I now would believe some of it was perpetuated deliberately by certain parties to bring us to this point.... and look at the timing... so close to another 'election.' Wake up out of your stupor America, you are being had. Granted, there are economic troubles but I do not believe they warrant a takeover of our markets and banks by ANY government to this extent. This sure looks like a coup to me.

Members of Congress were told they could face martial law if they didn’t pass the bailout bill. This will not be the last time.

Background: the First Brigade of the Third Infantry Division, three to four thousand soldiers, has been deployed in the United States as of October 1. Their stated mission is the form of crowd control they practiced in Iraq, subduing “unruly individuals,” and the management of a national emergency. I am in Seattle and heard from the brother of one of the soldiers that they are engaged in exercises now. Amy Goodman reported that an Army spokesperson confirmed that they will have access to lethal and non lethal crowd control technologies and tanks.

George Bush struck down Posse Comitatus, thus making it legal for military to patrol the U.S. He has also legally established that in the “War on Terror,” the U.S. is at war around the globe and thus the whole world is a battlefield. Thus the U.S. is also a battlefield.

He also led change to the 1807 Insurrection Act to give him far broader powers in the event of a loosely defined “insurrection” or many other “conditions” he has the power to identify. The Constitution allows the suspension of habeas corpus — habeas corpus prevents us from being seized by the state and held without trial — in the event of an “insurrection.” With his own army force now, his power to call a group of protesters or angry voters “insurgents” staging an “insurrection” is strengthened.

    • Welcome to the final stages of the coup...

      By Larisa Alexandrovna

If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it. ~ Julius Caesar

In 2000, the long fought for and long admired democracy of the United States of America began a slow and steady decline toward fascism - a Bush family tradition - with the installment of a president - a man the citizens overwhelmingly rejected (although the funny math told a still believed myth) - by a few corrupt judges on the US Supreme Court. That coup is now nearly complete and checkmate is all but unavoidable.

Let me first point you to the Bush administration's so-called Wall Street bailout bill, here, so that you can see for yourself that this treachery is being conducted in the light of day. Fascism is finally and formally out of the right-wing closet even if the F word is not yet openly being used (although it should be, and often).

Now, if you do not yet understand that the Wall Street crisis is a man-made disaster done through intentional deregulation and corruption, I have a bridge in Alaska to sell to you (or Sara Palin does anyway). This manufactured crisis is now to be remedied, if the fiscal fascists get their way, with the total transfer of Congressional powers (the few that still remain) to the Executive Branch and the total transfer of public funds into corporate (via government as intermediary) hands.

Adam Davidson of NPR blogs about the so-called bailout bill as follows:

"I would guess that this has to be one of the biggest peacetime transfers of power from Congress to the Administration in history. (Anyone know?). Certainly one of the most concise.

"The Treasury Secretary can buy broadly defined assets, on any terms he wants, he can hire anyone he wants to do it and can appoint private sector companies as financial deputies of the US government. And he can write whatever regulation he thinks are needed."

Most importantly, Davidson points to this passage in the bill:

"Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."

The Bush family, in the form of Prescott Bush, has tried a more aggressive coup before in order to install fascism in this country. This treasonous plot was called "the Business Plot," because the high-level plotters - including Prescott Bush - were Wall Street men who openly supported fascism.

Could the FEMA concentration camps all over the country be for the poor, the dispossessed, the homeless, and dissenters?

    • Al-Qaida and the US Agree on Mauritania

Al-Qaida and the United States are not usually on the same side of an issue. One exception though: Mauritania. After the bloodless military coup of Aug. 6 in this North African country, both al-Qaida and the U.S. were quick to denounce very vocally the new regime.

While it is true that this coup puts a stop to the recent democratization process, it would have been wise for the West to read between the lines and assess that one of the major reasons for this event was to stop the Islamists.

Mauritania has a history of coups: The country has had 31 coup attempts since 1978; some were successful. Sheikh Sidi Ould Abdallahi, the president that was unseated, was the first democratically elected leader of Mauritania in 2007. He was a civilian and a democrat but had been contested within his own majority and the country had witnessed a major political crisis in the three months preceding the coup.

Abdallahi made mistakes that made him unpopular with the population and the very powerful military. He opened up the prisons, freeing at the same time dangerous Islamists. According to a Mauritanian intellectual: "This was a mistake because, in a country with an oriental mentality where the despotic [need] remains very strong, this democratic concession was seen as a sign of weakness." Thus the Islamists have been all the more active for the past two years. Furthermore, the president made several gestures to please the Islamists, such as re-establishing the Muslim week-end (Friday and Saturday), building a mosque in the presidential palace, allowing the creation of an Islamist political party that legitimized Islamists.

But what was not tolerated by many people is the wave of terrorism that Mauritania experienced. Indeed, in a span of one month between December 2007 and January 2008, the Paris-Dakar race had to be canceled because of credible terror threats in Mauritania and three serious terrorist attacks that took place.

Among a large portion of the population, these terror attacks represented a tipping point. Mauritanians blamed the president for not having a strong grip on the Islamists, as his predecessors did. In fact, after the attacks the president seemed hesitant to take the appropriate measures to forcefully tackle the terrorist issue. And contestation of his power started to grow stronger, especially among the military that called for a tougher stance on terrorists.

Mauritanians have a long tradition of tolerance -- it is one of only three Arab countries hosting an Israeli embassy. Ahmed Ould Daddah, a leader of the opposition and nephew of the first president of independent Mauritania, said: "Mauritanians are very humiliated. For us, a foreigner is sacred. Never were any Frenchmen so coldly murdered. This is a new phenomenon, a very serious one."

The security situation also went from bad to worse, and it was not a major surprise that the military decided to seize power to reverse this trend.

Al-Qaida right away knew that this change of regime was going to be a setback for them. So, AQIM issued a communiqué on the web calling for all the forces in the Maghreb to converge to Mauritania to kick out the new regime and install an Islamic state. Also interestingly, AQIM accused the United States and France of being the instigators of the coup. Weirdly enough, at about the same time, the U.S. and France both forcefully condemned the coup calling the new regime illegitimate and suspended their non-humanitarian help, which actually included financial support to fight the war against radical Islam.

The fact that al-Qaida and some Western nations agree over the new Mauritanian regime should make the U.S. and French diplomacy review their troubling assessment of the situation. This all the more so that North Africa has become a very important battlefield for al-Qaida and that Mauritania, a vast and sparsely populated (three million), has always been the soft underbelly of the region.
