    • Born in America, Heart in Mexico

American musician Shawn Kiehne, aka El Gringo, whose passion for Mexican culture is found not only in his love for norteño music, but also in his song lyrics in Spanish that champion the struggles of rural working class labor and immigrants, and against the Bush administration's plans to fortify the U.S.-Mexico border with a wall. Keihne -- who grew up in Los Lunas, New Mexico, in a German-American family -- is distinctive in that not only is he an emerging singer writing and performing music in a Latino genre, but genuinely embraces and identifies with Mexican culture.

ABQJournal.com's Bruce Daniels writes about Shawn Kiehne as profiled in Josh Kun's article in a New York Times article, "Born in America, Heart in Mexico" (20 July 2008); the NYT's article also offers sample audio. The NYT article is currently available online here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/20/arts/music/20kun.html.

    • The main reasons why the Mexican cross the U.S border illegaly.

Unfortunately the economic situacion what the illegal immigrants have from their home countries takes them to cross the U.S. border illegaly, thinking for their "American Dream" and to improve their families situation regardles how are they going to be treat by reaching their goal.

The reasons why the Mexican people cross the border are as the following:

1.- This situation is due to the Mexican government and the police enforcement corruption and the way they handle and steal their taxes, they just care about their personal interests.

2.- Lack of information about the U.S country and their politic with the immigrant people specially for Mexicans.

3.- The EDUCATION from their home countries, Almost all illegal immigrants could not reach the grade 12 of Highschool.

4.- The DISCRIMINATION to get a job in Mexico based on age, sexual orientation, ethnicy and sometimes religion but the main reasons are the age and ethnicy.

Examples: If someone look for an Office Position and he/she belongs from an indigenist group the employer won't hire him/her and they do not even look at him/her face so that's why they ask for his/her picture by filling out the job application.

And if someone is a woman, married and over 30 yrs old the employer won't hire her and if someone is a man the age limit to get a job is 35.

For those 4 main reasons the illegal immigrant think that they do not have any choise to cross the U.S border because they need to survive.

The International Amnesty MUST pay attention and must put pressure on the Mexican government to improve the situation and set up laws to avoid the discrimination mentioned above to avoid the illegal immigration in the U.S.

There is not excuse for the Mexican government, Mexico shouldn't ever live a poor economic situation because that country has everything such as Petroleum, natural resources, nice weather, archeology, beaches etc . . . On the other hand the illegal immigrant should open their eyes and help to put pressure on the Mexican government to stop stealing the taxes (15%) and start improving their life styles.

How many Mexican has been killed in the U.S because of Racism? How many Mexican died by crossing the border?

    • Immigration debate turns Hispanics away from McCain

GOP strategist Bill McInturff has long emphasized that earning 40 percent of the Hispanic vote is critical for Republicans to win. Today, McInturff is John McCain’s pollster, and by his metric McCain has a serious Latino problem.

While he earned the support of about seven in ten Hispanics in his last Arizona Senate race, a Pew Hispanic Center poll released Thursday shows that just 23 percent of Latinos intend to vote for McCain in the presidential contest, barely half of the four in ten Latino voters who exit polls showed voted for President Bush in 2004.

McCain’s problem looks to be most pronounced among Protestant Latinos, who had seemed to be the GOP’s doorway into the Hispanic population. From 2000 to 2004, Protestant Latinos increased their share of the total Hispanic electorate from 25 percent to 32 percent, in large part because of Bush’s evangelical outreach and strategic microtargeting of the community. Even as turnout increased, support for Bush among the group rose from 44 percent in 2000 to 56 percent in 2004.

The Pew poll, however, shows that only a third of Protestant or Evangelical Hispanics intend to vote for McCain, while 59 percent support Obama — who also enjoys a 50-percentage-point lead among Catholic Latinos, long a solid bloc of the Democratic coalition.

While McCain and Bush have similar views on most social issues, including abortion, McCain's candidacy may mark a return to an era of blue-blooded Republicans less vocal about their religious beliefs. Barack Obama, by contrast, speaks comfortably and frequently about his faith.

The biggest reason for the shift, though, has been the heated debate over immigration reform that has alienated many Hispanic voters previously receptive to the GOP — and that nearly cost McCain, a co-sponsor of the bipartisan 2006 immigration reform bill that inflamed conservatives, his party’s nomination.

    • Whites May Exaggerate Black-Latino Tensions

The issue has obvious importance this election year, with Barack Obama soon to become the nation's first black on the ballot as a major-party candidate for president. Obama had difficulty carrying the Hispanic vote in the Democratic primaries earlier this year -- something that led to considerable media speculation about black-Hispanic animosity as the cause -- but Gallup polling has shown him solidly beating Republican John McCain among Hispanics throughout the campaign.

While black-Hispanic animosity may exist and could even have been a factor in some state caucuses or primaries, the Gallup data indicates it is not overwhelmingly obvious to members of either group. Whites are much more likely to believe the two are in conflict.

Hispanics preferred Clinton over Obama for the Democratic nomination, but they were not so opposed to Obama (or the idea of electing a black president) that they were willing to vote for McCain in the general election.

In quegli anni il latino era parlato soprattutto dai chierici e risaltava in molti documenti scritti principalmente in materie teologiche e giuridiche.
In assenza d... more

"Lost in the controversy over his death and the violent repression of the National Chicano Moratorium rally (attended by 30,000 people) against the Vietnam War – was the historic nature of [Ruben Salazar's] journalism. Clearly, he was a journalist before his time and what he reported in the El Paso Herald Post and the Los Angeles Times, from 1955 through 1970, still seems relevant to this day. He covered an unpopular war; Vietnam. He also covered Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the upheaval in Mexico in the 1960s. He also wrote about the anti-war movement, black-brown relations, police repression, the border, the inhumane treatment of migrants, the trouble in the lettuce fields, and social and educational inequalities...

While not an activist, his journalism brought the emerging Chicano civil rights movement to the nation’s attention. He defined for the nation – in language that mainstream society understood – what it meant to be Chicano."
