Condoms for Catholics?
Activists have won the right to promote condoms to Catholics at World Youth Day, the Guardian reports.
Young Catholics attending World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney may find themselves swamped with offers of free condoms after legislation giving police the power to arrest anyone who "annoys" pilgrims was overturned by a court.
Activists opposed to the church's stance on contraception and abortion successfully appealed the laws, passed by the New South Wales government.
Members of the NoToPope coalition argued in a federal court challenge on Tuesday that the anti-annoyance regulations, which carry fines of $5,500, were invalid and contrary to civil liberties.
Three judges agreed, saying the measures designed to help police keep order during the six-day festivities "should not be interpreted as conferring powers that are repugnant to fundamental rights and freedoms".
University students Rachel Evans and Amber Pike, who challenged the legislation, said they and other protesters would now hand out condoms, stickers and leaflets to pilgrims. "Symbolic coat-hangers", designed to draw attention to the problem of backyard abortions, would also be distributed.
Evans said protestors wearing T-shirts with slogans such as "The Pope is Wrong – Put a Condom on" and "Pope go Homo" would picket a cross-city march due to be held on Saturday.
A victory for human rights and civil freedoms? Or another attack on an already-vulnerable Catholic church? Should young Catholics be left to practice their beliefs of contraception in peace? Surely it's an individual's choice to get either rubbered up, or up the duff?

Bobby Jindal participated in Exorcism
"in an essay Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer."
Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana and possible VP choice for John McCain, is a radical member of the Religious Right. Not only has he performed exorcisms to fight demons, but he has also shown extreme support for Intelligent Design (aka Creationism), castration and execution of sexual offenders and support for denying homosexuals their rights.
I'm fairly confident when I say that most Americans probably do not agree with his radical, bizarre beliefs, but does John McCain?
Is this a man we can afford to have in the White House? I don't think so, but what say you?

First misogynist, er, sorry, 'Bishop' to leave Church of England over women bishop...
A bishop in the Church of England has become the first to announce he is ready to convert to Roman Catholicism following the decision to ordain women bishops, reports the Telegraph.
So he's also become the first bishop to out himself as an utter misogynist? And he'd rather change denomination entirely (and that's a big deal) than allow women deserved and equal access to the annals of power in the Christian church? And he wants to take his entire congregations with him (congregations which, I assume, must include women. Dopey ones though obviously. Ones who are only allowed to do the flowers) based on these out-dated and offensive beliefs!?
Smooth.
If you needed reminding why atheism is so appealing, here's a little something just for you.

Pope will make Hawaii's Damien a saint
Hawai'i Catholics rejoiced yesterday at news that the pope had cleared the way for Father Damien's sainthood and began planning for the big event.

"There's excitement, but there's, 'Oh, what do we have to do next?'" said the Rev. Ed Popish, who served for years as a pastor in Kalaupapa, Moloka'i, where Damien volunteered to work with patients afflicted with Hansen's disease, then called leprosy. Damien contracted the disease himself and died in 1889 at age 49.
The Vatican reported yesterday that Pope Benedict XVI signed a decree accepting that the miraculous cure of Audrey Toguchi of 'Aiea from terminal cancer was attributable to her prayers to Damien for his intervention with God.

'Safe' Catholic school that let killer deal drugs, have sex and worship the devil
The police investigation into the killing exposed a culture of drug taking, violence and Satanism among some pupils which raised disturbing questions for the authorities that run the Roman Catholic secondary school - one of 59 such schools in Scotland.
Midlothian Council has refused to reveal what action, if any, was taken to tackle Mitchell’s behaviour, but senior school sources admit teachers were "not in control" of the teenager.
Now parents and politicians have demanded an investigation into why a pupil with a history of violence, drug dealing, underage sex and a fascination with Satan was allowed to continue his damaging behaviour seemingly unchecked.
Mitchell’s criminal activities and his attempts to corrupt other pupils with drugs and Satanism were no secret at St David’s. The police investigation into the killing exposed a culture of drug taking, violence and Satanism among some pupils which raised distu... more -

Bishops condemn stem cell research
Catholic bishops on Friday condemned the destruction of human embryos for stem cell research as a "gravely immoral act" in the organization's first formal statement on the issue.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted 191-1 to adopt the statement, without debate or discussion.
"Harvesting these 'embryonic stem cells' involves the deliberate killing of innocent human beings, a gravely immoral act," the organization said.
The identity of the one dissenter or the reason for his dissent was not made public at the gathering in Orlando.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, said ballots are signed but are destroyed after they are counted. Naumann said the reason for the 'no' vote could be as simple as a disagreement with the phrasing in the document.
"I'm assuming the person isn't going against the pope's teaching," Naumann said.

Brazil OKs embryonic stem cell research
Brazil's Supreme Court has passed an unprecedented ruling to allow scientists to conduct embryonic stem cell research, which may hold the key to curing Parkinson's disease and diabetes. Advocates say the top court's ruling could make the nation a leader in the field.
The decision is likely to receive condemnation from Brazil's Roman Catholic Church, which has slammed embryonic stem cell research, saying life begins at conception and that by destroying the embryo scientists destroy human life. Lutheran Bishop Thomas Skrenes praises interfaith work: EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth...
An Earth Healing message, thank you and congratulations from Lutheran Bishop Thomas A. Skrenes about the success of the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge
A Lutheran Bishop who has participated in interfaith Earth Day recycling projects for four years in a row said "the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge has been a success."
Celebrate - what a great day Earth Day has been 2008," said Lutheran Bishop Thomas A. Skrenes of the Northern Great Lakes Synod (NGLS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). "The Earth Healing Initiative has been a great success this year."
"Computers have been recycled, pharmaceuticals have been brought together for proper disposal," Skrenes said.
"What a great opportunity it has been to be part of the ecumenical work and interfaith work of assisting others to see the environmental concerns set before us," said Bishop Skrenes of Marquette, Michigan.
With hundreds of thousands of people participating across eight states in the Midwest and Northeast, Bishop Skrenes said interfaith environment projects like the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge will help ensure a better future for all humans.
"It is a sign of great significance that people can join hands and work together," Skrenes said. "So celebrate - it is a good day for the environment and it is a good day for all of us together."
Bishop Skrenes thanked the EPA, faith communities and "people of goodwill throughout the upper Midwest who have been a part of this work."
"It has been a great day, a great week, a great Earth day 2008," Skrenes said.
"The EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge has been a part of the lives and will be a part of the future of this whole area."
Bishop Skrenes is one of the original nine faith leaders who signed the Earth Keeper Covenant in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 2004 that lead to many interfaith projects
Background: Earth Healing Initiative and the Michigan Earth Keeper Initiative
The Cedar Tree Institute (CTI) co-founded the interfaith Earth Keeper Initiative in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that works closely with ten faith traditions on a wide range of environment projects that include college students, at-risk teens, American Indian tribes and others.
.
The CTI Earth healing Initiative is developing the same relationship with the same faith communities in northern Michigan and others across the Great lakes.
The faith communities include Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, The Religious Society of Friends (commonly known as the Quakers) and Zen Buddhist.

Japan’s baby hatch - 16 babies dropped off in first year
A better alternative to abortion?
Instead of having one, you leave it at this church so they don't result in an unwanted death.
Politicians are now questioning the morals of this practice... Is this just going to raise irresponsibility within couples, or is this something we should have thought about years ago?
The church in Japan wouldn't disclose exactly how many babies have been dropped off since its launch in 2007, but the figure is estimated to be around 16 infants. A better alternative to abortion?
