Obesity 'raises miscarriage risk'
Women who have had a miscarriage could be at greater risk of miscarrying again if they are obese, research suggests.
A team from London's St Mary's Hospital followed the progress of 696 women whose miscarriages were classed as "unexplained" by a specialist clinic.
The team told a conference in Canada the risk of a further miscarriage was raised by 73% if the woman was obese.
However, an obesity specialist said it was potentially dangerous to try to lose weight when already pregnant.
Although the links between being obese and having problems conceiving and complications during pregnancy are well known, this study claims to be the first to look specifically at "recurrent" miscarriage, for which there is often no obvious cause.
Of the 696 women whose cases were followed, more than half were of "normal" weight, 30% were overweight, and 15% were obese, meaning they had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above.
The older the woman, the higher chance she had of having another miscarriage, but, when the figures were adjusted to account for this, obesity emerged as another possible factor.
While there was no difference in the miscarriage rates for overweight, normal and underweight women, the risk of further miscarriage increased sharply for obese women.
Foetal malformation
Winnie Lo, a clinical nurse specialist at St Mary's, who presented the research at the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology's international meeting in Montreal, said: "This is the first study to look directly at the link between BMI and recurrent miscarriage.
"It shows that obese women who experience recurrent miscarriage are at greater risk of subsequent pregnancy loss.
"All women with recurrent miscarriage should be weighed at their first consultation.
"Those who are found to be obese should be counselled regarding the benefits of weight loss."
Dr Nick Finer, an endocrinologist with an interest in obesity from Addenbrooke's Hospital near Cambridge, said that the findings were "unsurprising".
"We already know that the chances of fertility are less with increasing BMI, the risks of foetal malformation increase, alongside the risks of other adverse pregnancy outcomes."
He said that, while the reason why obesity might cause such problems was not clear, it was possible that it increased inflammation, harming the chances of a successful pregnancy.
However, he warned that crash diets during pregnancy would never be recommended as a means of increasing the chances of success.
"There are good reasons to try to lose weight before getting pregnant, but it is recommended that women do not try to do this once pregnancy is established, as it could cause problems." Bristol Palin's Baby Daddy Drama?
A young man posted a video on YouTube on September 3rd claiming to be the father of Bristol Palin's unborn child.
The LA native says he was visiting Wiscila "last summer" and struck up a relationship with the Vice-Presidential nominee's 17 year old daughter, in which the two were "together intimately".
Goes on to claim that he has been shut out of Bristol Palin's life and that her parents have decided that the father of the child is Levi, Bristol Palin's current boyfriend. He says that he feels that he is being pushed away because he is a black man and because of politics. He continues to say that he expects to be involved with his unborn child's life. He says he will peruse legal options if necessary.
He appeals to the Palin family to reach out to him to make some agreement. He says he wants to do the right thing and take a stand for the "dying breed" of the young black father.
He also states in the nearly 5 minute video which at the time of this writing has over 100,000 views, that he is a Democrat voting for Democratic Nominee Barack Obama in November. He also mentions he is a musician working on his "urban rap career." A young man posted a video on YouTube on September 3rd claiming to be the father of Bristol Palin's unborn child. ... more -

Palin says 17-year-old daughters pregnant
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's.
A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child's father. Bristol Palin's baby is due in late December.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.
The disclosure of the pregnancy came on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, scaled back because of Hurricane Gustav, and three days after McCain named Palin as his running mate. The other news was likely to overshadow the disclosure.
The first-term Alaska governor was in Minnesota preparing for her acceptance speech when the campaign issued the statement; her family was home in Alaska.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," they added.
The father was identified in the statement as Levi, but the campaign said it was not disclosing his full name or age or how he and Bristol know each other, citing privacy.
Sarah Palin's fifth child, a son named Trig, was born in April with Down syndrome. Internet bloggers have been suggesting that the child was actually born to Bristol Palin but that her mother, the 44-year-old Alaska governor, claimed to be the mother. ST. PAUL, Minn. France's model heath care for new mommies
Morning Edition, July 10, 2008 · Mary Lou Sarazin went to Paris to teach. When the job ended, she was newly married to a French husband and pregnant. Her visa had expired, however, and she couldn't renew it right away, so she returned to New York a little over a year ago to finish graduate school and have the baby.
Sarazin, 34, has since received health care in both France and the United States. Her experience has given her a firsthand look into why France has earned a reputation for being a good place to be pregnant and have a child.
In New York, pregnant and unable to find work, Sarazin couldn't find health insurance that she could afford. Eventually, she did get limited coverage through New York Medicaid, the state program for the poor and uninsured, but it only covered her prenatal and hospital care. Once the baby was born, she would be uninsured again.
"I just felt like when I was in New York, it was always stress, stress, stress," she says. "I just didn't like the care I was receiving. And I didn't want to stress out about something I shouldn't have to stress out, not at the time of my pregnancy."

Birth Defect Three To Four Times More Likely For Infants Born To Diabetic Women
"Pregnant women with diabetes are three to four times more likely to give birth to an infant with a birth defect than other pregnant women, according to a CDC study scheduled to be published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the AP/San Jose Mercury News reports.
According to the AP/Mercury News, the study -- which used hospital data from 1997 to 2003 in 10 states -- provides the most detailed information on the kinds of conditions experienced by infants of diabetic women. The CDC researchers who conducted the study listed nearly 40 kinds of birth defects found to be significantly more likely infants born to diabetic women than other infants.
The study compared 13,000 births that involved a major defect and compared them with 5,000 randomly selected births that did not involve a major defect. Researchers asked pregnant women if they had been diagnosed with diabetes before or during their pregnancies."
