Texting Caused Deadly L.A. Train Crash?
Federal officials investigating a commuter rail collision that killed 26 people said they want to review cell phone records to determine if an engineer blamed for running a stop signal before the crash may have been text messaging at the time.
Coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said a 26th death was reported to his office on Monday, of a man who died at County-USC Medical Center. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
With no answer on the cause of Friday's crash, a smaller number of commuters than normal returned to the rails Monday morning.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa boarded one of the morning's earliest trains.
"I want to dispel any fears about taking the train," the mayor said. "Safety has to be our number one concern, and while accidents can and do happen, taking the train is still one of the safest and fastest options for commuters."
The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed on Sunday that the engineer, who was killed in the crash, had failed to stop at the final red signal.
CBS Station KCAL correspondent Kristine Lazar reported exclusively that one minute before the crash, a teenager received a text message on his cell phone from the engineer, whom friends identified as Robert Sanchez.
The text message received told where Sanchez would be meeting another passenger train.
But train enthusiasts who knew Sanchez well doubt that he was to blame. They called their friend professional and caring. To a man, they said he would "never" have been reckless or unprofessional.
Another of Sanchez's friends, teenager Evan Morrison, told Lazar that Sanchez "was not the kind of guy who would run a red light."
When asked by KCAL to comment on the report, Metrolink spokesperson Denise Tyrell said, "I can't believe someone could be texting while driving a train."
KCAL said the teen was among a group of youths who befriended the engineer and asked him questions about his work.

It was the deadliest passenger train crash since Sept. 22, 1993, when Amtrak's Sunset Limited plunged off a trestle into a bayou near Mobile, Ala., moments after the trestle was damaged by a towboat; 47 people were killed.

Welcome, but No Boys Allowed!!
On a desolate and grim street in downtown LA, lies a hidden gem. It's a (somewhat) secret place known to its regulars as "Fight Club". This of course is because of the first (and second) rule of "Fight Club" which is "We don't talk about Fight Club!". The place is Shareen Vintage.
A lack of dressing rooms, led to a "no boys allowed" policy, and what ensued, was unique community for women. Owner Shareen Mitchell says, " What actually goes on here is a loving exchange with and about women." A place where they can gather not only to shop, but to discuss and work through their problems with friends and strangers alike, in an atmosphere set up much like a home (with a bed, bureaus, and even living room area complete with snacks and magazines) It takes the meaning of "retail therapy" to a whole new level! LA Community Colleges Switching to Solar, Need More Funding
Getting Schools Up to Par Will Cost More Than 3 Billion, Officials Say
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is catching up with the times, and maybe getting a little ahead, by upgrading their facilities with state of the art buildings and classrooms.
Technology based jobs are the wave of the future, and the only way that residents of Los Angeles are going to be able to obtain those jobs is through a state of the art education.
Fifty percent of LACCD students live below the poverty level, so it is very important for the district to be able to give students the best possible education so that they will be able to obtain a job that will give them a better life.
The district has received $2.2 billion through two measures in 2001 and 2003 to upgrade the facilities on the nine LACCD campuses. Larry Eisenberg, Executive Director of Facilities Planning and Development for the LACCD, said that the district has spent $1.4 billion so far on new construction and repairs to existing buildings. The district is spending about $15-20 million per week. At that rate the district would have exhausted their funds by next year.
The district is looking for an additional $3.5 billion to complete the various projects. The community will be able to vote on Measure J this fall to allow the district to obtain the money that it needs.
Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, the chair of the LACCD Citizens’ Oversight Committee, refers to the measure as “Measure Jobs”. Eisenberg calculates that 29,000 new jobs will be created by this project.
State of the art facilities and curriculum based on new technology will train students for the complicated jobs of today. A number of green-related jobs have been created over the past five years, and the district looks to train students so that they can obtain employment in those fields.
The district looks to become the first chain of colleges to produce their own energy through solar power, which Eisenberg points out will save the district $10 million per year. That money can be used to create more jobs within the district. There will need to be workers to maintain the equipment. There will need to be workers to keep the new buildings clean. And there will need to be more professors in the new classrooms.
Eisenberg envisions that when the project is completed the district will be able to offer students the education to obtain employment in high tech fields.
“We need to incorporate state of the art technology that prepares students for the jobs of the future where technology is going to be the key,” Eisenberg said.
By having new facilitates and curriculum the district will be able to attract many residents who may not think about attending a college. The population is also growing at a fast pace, so more buildings and professors are needed.
With more educated residents who will have good paying jobs, the economy of Los Angeles will be stimulated.
With all of the new construction African-American builders have been able to benefit. Last year over $1 million went to African-American firms.
It is important to the community for the LACCD to be able to give students the best possible education. Voting yes on Measure J this fall will ensure a bright future for the youth of Los Angeles. Getting Schools Up to Par Will Cost More Than 3 Billion, Officials Say ... more -

Tropic Thunder: offensive to the mentally handicapped?
The use of the word retard 16 times in Ben Stiller's new comedy Tropic Thunder, attracted protests at its US premiere in Los Angeles last night.
Members of disability group Special Olympics (WTF?!) said that the film's language is used "without any regard for the dignity of people with intellectual disabilities."

In LA, they "antisocial-network"
Yep, that's pretending to 'network,' but not actually wanting to.
On a recent trip to LA, Chris Ayers fell foul of LA's latest trend, 'antisocial-networking,' which he describes as "people wanting to give the illusion of staying in touch - while going to great lengths to eliminate the risk of any actual interaction taking place."
He thinks it's a 'symptom' of a 'maxed-out population' that just can't take any more tweets, pokes, messages or nudges,
I wonder if it's just because he didn't pay his bill and couldn't make or receive calls, or that he just doesn't have that many friends. Yep, that's pretending to 'network,' but not actually wanting to. ... more -
Los Angeles bans fast food in poor areas to tackle obesity
Fast food restaurants have been banned in a poor part of Los Angeles for a year.
The city council voted for a year-long ban so that the area - which currently has around 400 fast-food eateries and few fresh food stores - can attract restaurants with healthier menus in the South Los Angeles, West Adams, Baldwin Hills and Leimert Park areas, after research found that around 30 percent of children living there are obese compared to about 21 percent in the rest of the city.
No more fast foods outlets will allowed to set up in the area, if the area's mayor completes the final stage of the process by signing the bill into law.
The action is thought to be the first of its kind by a major city to protect public health.
Is this a good move by the council? Should local authorities be able to regulate what we eat? How would you feel if fast-food was banned in your area? And is it an individual's or a community's responsibility to manage diet and health? Fast food restaurants have been banned in a poor part of Los Angeles for a year. ... more -
