    • Peacekeepers killed in Darfur

Five peacekeepers from a UN-African Union force have reportedly been killed after their patrol was ambushed in Sudan's northern Darfur region.

The Suna news agency quoted an unidentified official from the joint force as saying the peacekeepers were attacked by a huge convoy of gunmen riding in 40 sport utility vehicles.

Another 17 peacekeepers remain missing, 18 others were wounded and 10 UN-AU vehicles were destroyed, the report said.

Among those killed, three were from Rwanda, one from Ghana and one from Uganda, Suna said. It did not give details about the gunmen.

The joint force took over peacekeeping duties in Darfur earlier this year with about 9,000 soldiers and police officers.

It is authorised to have 26,000 members, but has contended with chronic shortages of staff and equipment and less-than-adequate cooperation from the Sudanese government.

The peacekeeping force has been unable to persuade the US and other governments to supply attack and transport helicopters, surveillance aircraft, military engineers and logistical support it needs to safely navigate the remote western Darfur region.

Last month, four UN-AU staffers were assaulted and held at gunpoint in Darfur.

One of the staffers was stripped of his belongings, kidnapped briefly and then released by Arab militiamen on horseback, according to a statement from the joint force

The UN has warned of rising banditry and insecurity in Darfur. Attackers killed an Ugandan peacekeeper in May.

The LAtimes had done a wonderufl interview with Craig Calfee in the past, but their archives are only free for a certain time.
Today, The San Francisco Chronicle published a great article about Craig Calfee (his bamboo designs, custom frame bikes and Ghana travles/programs)
      -
"It is wonderful to work with natural materials that just grows out of the ground"

adjacent post in today's paper about Calfee and 2 other bike makers (here in the Bay Area):

    • Butter that brought fat profits to the mud huts of Ghana

After two decades of being mocked as the "toothless one", Habiba Anhasan used her first earnings this week to buy a set of dentures.

Until a year ago, the £130 price of the false teeth would have been only a dream for a woman such as Mrs Anhasan, who scratched a living as a hawker selling cheap goods in the arid savannah of northern Ghana.

But a mixture of arduous labour under the blistering sun and insatiable demand in the developed world for plant-based beauty products, has transformed Mrs Anhasan and 30 other women into a band of steely entrepreneurs with a lucrative toehold in a £2bn global cosmetics industry.

    • Bush watches baseball in Africa

Five thousand miles from home, President Bush found his true love—baseball.

Standing at home plate in a tiny ballfield at Ghana International School, Bush exclaimed: "Welcome to T-ball in Ghana. ... Play ball!"

It was only a one-inning game sandwiched around a rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," but it was long enough for Bush to get in the mood. He sat with a red-shirted team called the Little Saints and cheered the players and their opponents, the Little Dragons.

Longitude's work in Ghana starts with Meshach Bondzie who began his non-profit secretarial school called PROFESA in Abeka, Ghana in 2000 because too many young adults in his community were forced to drop out of high school due to the rising cost of school fees.

LONGITUDE is a non-profit organization based in Providence, Rhode Island, devoted to supporting the work of PROFESA and thereby improving the lives of their clients. We are dedicated to the work of these leaders of educational and human rights initiatives in the hopes of achieving change from within the community.

    • Think BIG

Think BIG showcases Ghanaians with big aspirations and big plans. Flash hotels, fab homes and full-on modernity are where it?s at. The film turns the usual pity fest on its head and showcases Ghanaians who are making it. This short documentary shows that some development is happening - Africa is not one great morass of extreme poverty. Aspirant Ghanaians (not aid workers) are responsible for some good news and bold ideas, and backing their ambitions might do our peers more favours than either the pennies we pop in tins to make us feel better or the survival-only goals prioritised in the West. Tomato farmer Lawrence wants a factory; Kwame Agyapong is building a film school and has visions of tourist vistas on Ghana?s deserted beaches; Patricia Ocloo loves her new sofa and modern bathroom, and resents the idea that being better-off means you don?t care; Emmanuel Chance is expanding a luxury hotel. These people are eloquent, aspirant and ambitious for themselves and their peers. They want full-on modernity. As David Ampofo puts it, in a moving end to the film: "Oh that this country will really become great... we won?t be stuck in so much dependence, it makes me sick." Think BIG showcases Ghanaians with big aspirations and big plans. Flash hotels, fab homes and full-on modernity are where it?s at. The... more

    • I'm a subsistence farmer, get me out of here!

This pod may disturb our romantic notions of rural life. In the West we love the countryside and 'getting away from it all' yet in Ghana, we learn that many would rather live in an urban shanty town than stay stuck in subsistence life in rural areas. Subsistence life means mud huts and mind-numbing toil. Helen wants a proper job, Cephus wants his kids to be doctors and lawyers. De Roy explains that at least in a shanty town people can have access to a clinic, menial work, electricity, drinkable water, paved roads and TVs. • On The Road in Ghana - From Accra to Cape Coast to Kumasi

Ghana has several major cities, the two biggest being Accra and Kumasi respectively. When traveling on the road, you go from deadlocked traffic, dozens of stores, and three times as many people, to open roads, amazing scenery, and a village now and then. These are some photos taken from the road en route from Accra, to Cape Coast, to Kakum, to Kumasi, and back.

The music is a Ga group called Wolomei, and the song is called Boboli Bobo. Read more about the Ga, known to the Greater Accra region here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ga_people

Cooking with Esi in Cape Coast, Ghana, at her restaurant "Be Nice & Rich." Esi will teach you how to make fried plantains, red red, palava sauce, boiled yam, groundnut soup / stew and of course, fufu. Noticing there were a lot of people around, she decided to make an impromptu Fante style chicken soup too.

About the ingredients, from left to right in the first still: yam, three ripe plantains, cassava, one unripe plantain, yellow African eggplant, purple onions, curry powder, Adobo seasoning, African spinach, palm oil, and a can of tomato paste. Somewhere around there are a bunch of Maggie cubes, which are essentially shrimp flavored bullion cubes. There was also fresh garlic, ginger, a couple of tomatoes, peanut butter, and cooked black eyed peas.
