    • Robert Redford 'beyond words' over Newman’s death

Paul Newman’s lasting impact in Hollywood was more than evident Saturday, a day after the Oscar winner succumbed to cancer, as stars and pals alike expressed their sadness over his death.

"There is a point where feelings go beyond words," two-time costar Robert Redford said in a statement. "I have lost a real friend. My life – and this country – is better for his being in it."

The pair, who shared heartthrob status in their heyday, starred together in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and again in The Sting, in 1973. A testament to their easygoing friendship: Redford famously gave Newman a dented, engine-less Porsche as a joke for his birthday one year. Newman repaid the favor by having the car crushed and sent back to the actor.

Newman's Absence of Malice costar Sally Field echoed the sentiment of fondness for the Oscar winner. "I was blessed to have known him," she said in a statement. "The world is better because of him. Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them."

Victoria Principal, who worked alongside Newman in the 1972 film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, referred to the actor as "my first leading man" in a statement. She added that he "set the bar impossibly high for everyone after that. His generosity was real and inspirational to everyone who knew him and the world was a better place while he was here."

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger saluted Newman for both his “cool” screen persona and his even greater sense of the world around him. “Paul Newman was the ultimate cool guy, who men wanted to be like and women adored," he said. "He was an American icon, a brilliant actor, a Renaissance man and a generous but modest philanthropist."

He continued, “He entertained millions in some of Hollywood’s most memorable roles ever, and he brightened the lives of many more, especially seriously ill children, through his charitable works. Paul was one of a kind. The beloved film star will be missed by a world of fans and admirers. Maria and I send our thoughts and prayers to his wife, Joanne Woodward, his entire family and his many friends.”

Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Clinton also acknowledged Newman's good deeds in a statement: “Paul was an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children. We will miss our dear friend, whose continued support always meant the world to us. Our prayers and thoughts are with Joanne and the Newman family and the many people who Paul impacted through his endless kindness and generosity.”

    • Paul Newman dies leaving $120M to charity

Spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic said Newman died yesterday.

Newman finished chemotherapy treatment for cancer in August and it was widely reported in the US that he had only weeks to live.

In June this year, a neighbour and business partner said the actor told him about the disease the previous year.

In May, Newman pulled out of directing John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for unspecified health reasons.

The actor's representative Toni Howard had previously dismissed the cancer claims as simply "not true".

Newman retired from acting in 2006 after a 50-year career that included Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1971), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).

Newman was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning best actor for his role in The Color Of Money in 1986.

    • 7 time Washington Senator All Star, '46 and '53 batting champ Mickey Ver...

Mickey Vernon truly the great hitter in D.C. Baseball history has passed away...
One of the greatest hitters ever to sport the old Senator's uniform, he played for the Washington Senators from 1939-1948, serving two years in World War II from 1944 to 1945.
His first year back from the war, in 1946, he shocked the league hitting .356 winning the AL batting title beating out Ted Williams who hit .342 that year.
He later went on the win the batting title again in 1953 in a neck and neck race with eventual MVP Al Rosen who would have otherwise won the triple crown if not for Vernon
Was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 1948, but traded back to Washington in 1950...
The Senators never played in the postseason during any of his playing years on the club.
He was however a player-coach on the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates team that defeated the heavily vaunted Yankees in the the most unforgettable World Series in history in 1960 where he earned his only World Series ring.

After the first Washington Senators franchised moved out to Minnesota, Washington was given a second Washington Senators franchise with whom he was named the inaugural manager, where he coached from 1961-1963.
The Senators lost 100 games in each of the full seasons he did manage in 1961 and 1962...

He holds the major league career record for most double plays he'd taken part in at first base with 2,044 and the American League record for career games played 2,227.
Only two players in baseball history have played in more career games total than Vernon.

In the book "Baseball's Famous First Basemen", Ira Smith quipped, "Mickey Vernon is as silent as a night watchman, as conservative as a banker, and as well-behaved as a vicar."

Baseball has truly lost a legend.

    • In Honor of Peter Miguel Camejo

      (excerpts)

Peter Miguel Camejo, a civil rights leader, socially responsible investment pioneer, and magnanimo caballero for third party politics in the US, peacefully passed away early Saturday morning at his home in Folsom, CA with his wife Morella at his side -- only days after completing his autobiography.

The 68-year-old justice fighter had been battling a reoccurrence of lymphoma cancer, and his condition had rapidly deteriorated over the past few days.

Peter was a student leader, civil rights advocate, leader in the socially responsible investment industry with his own investment firm, Progressive Asset Management, Inc., and author of books on investment and history including Racism, Revolution, Reaction, 1861-1877, The Rise and Fall of Radical Reconstruction, California Under Corporate Rule, and his recent book, The SRI Advantage: Why Socially Responsible Investing Has Outperformed Financially.

      ...

Among the many causes Peter forcefully championed were a living wage, healthcare for all, and making the US the world leader in renewable energy. He was also a passionate advocate for electoral reform, pressing for proportional representation and instant run-off voting (allows voters to rank their top choices) in an effort to overturn the "200-year-old dysfunctional money-dominated winner take-all system that disrespects the will of the people."

Peter was a friend, colleague and politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western Hemisphere. Everyone who met Peter, talked with Peter, worked with Peter, or argued with Peter, will miss the passing of a great American.

The financial newswire Bloomberg is saddened to report the death of Steve Jobs. More saddened: the very much still living Steve Jobs.

Apparently, while updating the obituary the newswire was saving for publication at a later date, they accidently pushed the "publish" button instead of "save. "

Citing Jobs as the "Arbiter of Cool Technology," the 12-section tribute to the Apple founder is actually quite touching...

    • Steve Jobs obituary accidentally published

The story, marked “Hold for release – Do not use”, was sent in error to the news service’s thousands of corporate clients.

The stock obituary was published "momentarily" after a routine update by a reporter, and was "immediately deleted", Bloomberg said.

Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003, but there is no suggestion that the news wire has recent news on his health. Most media organisations regularly update their pre-prepared obituaries of newsworthy figures.

The obituary, which has been obtained by a US gossip blog, contained blank spaces for Jobs’s age and cause of death to be inserted.

The opening sentence described Jobs as the man who “helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music and refashioned the mobile phone.”

The 2,500-word piece also included praise for Jobs from his rival Microsoft boss Bill Gates, details of his rise from college drop-out to technology billionaire, and a list of his family “survivors”.

Details of friends and colleagues of the Apple founder to be contacted by Bloomberg in the event of his death were also published with the obituary.

Bloomberg, which was founded by New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and prides itself on its accuracy and transparency, later published a note acknowledging the story's retraction on its wire.

“An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m.New York time today,” the message read.

“The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted.”

A Bloomberg spokeswoman said: "This was a routine update of a biography by the obits department, meant for the internal system and not meant for publication.

"It was momentarily posted on the external wire, in error, and immediately deleted."

Jobs has been reluctant to publicly discuss his health, but recently denied claims that his cancer had returned.
