    • Dying eight-year-old 'marries' his school sweetheart

      Given only weeks to live, Reece Fleming proposed to his 'special friend' Elleanor Purgslove at a laser tag party.

      After she accepted, their parents arranged a make-believe wedding at Reece's home in Mackworth, Derby. He died the next day with his family.

      Reece's mother Lorraine Fleming said he told her, "I can go now" after his wish had been granted.

      The 28-year-old said: ""He was so proud of her, and we were proud of them both."

      Reece was diagnosed with leukaemia in July 2004, when he was aged just four.

      He fought the disease for four years until May when doctors told him he had just weeks to live.

      Ms Fleming, said she and his stepfather Mick Thompson had tried to help him achieve as much as possible before his death, including marrying his sweetheart.

      "When we found out that we only had a few weeks with him we tried to do absolutely everything with him that we could.

      "Him and Ellie had been 'special friends' for a couple of years but then they broke up.

      "We said we'd have a pirate party, and Ellie came. She went to visit Reece a few times in hospital as well.

      She added: "We also had a football and laser quest party, apparently that's when he proposed to her."

      The pair went out to dinner in the mayor's limousine and the families organised a 'wedding', complete with rings, a stand-in vicar and a certificate.

      The ceremony was carried out on July 4 and the following day Reece died at home with his family and a Macmillan nurse.

      At his funeral, mourners followed a horse-drawn hearse on foot.

      Ms Fleming added: "Even on the Saturday that he died, he got out of bed and walked to the sofa.

      "He always tried walking, right to the end, so we thought if he walked for us then we would walk for him."

    • Canto Della Terra/Song of the Earth

      Andrea Bocelli uplifts my soul when I am feeling weary of this world and its despair. His voice makes me believe there is hope. This song particularly (along with Sogno) uplifts my spirit and is not only a song of love, but a song to celebrate our Earth. Perhaps a positive vibe will go a bit of the way to truly changing this world. I hope so, because to be honest I have been losing hope in people of late. I hope this song uplifts you as it does me.

      And just as a sidenote: We need the mighty sun to save our planet and ourselves.

      Translation of the song:

      Yes I know
      My love, that you and I
      Are together briefly
      For just a few moments
      In silence
      As we look out of our windows
      And listen
      To the sky
      And to a world
      That's awakening
      And the night is already far away
      Already, far away

      Look at this world
      Spinning with us
      Even in the dark
      Look at this world
      Spinning for us
      Giving us hope and some
      Sun, sun sun

      My love, you are you my love
      I hear your voice,
      And I listen to the sea.
      It sounds just like your breathing
      And all the love you want to give me
      This love
      That is there, hidden
      Hidden among the waves
      All the waves in the world
      Just like a boat that....

      Look at this world
      Spinning with us
      Even in the dark
      Look at this world
      Spinning for us
      Giving us hope,
      And some sun, sun, sun,
      Some sun, sun, sun.

      Look at this world
      Spinning with us
      Giving us some sun,

    • Rare coincidence of incurable juvenile dementia found in two toddlers in the same ...

      Tragically, they are expected to die at any time in the next 10 to 12 years.

      However, their tormented parents are now drawing comfort from one another after suddenly discovering they live only a few miles apart in the same UK town.

      And their respective children have since become inseparable.

      Baby Josh, aged 20 months, and toddler Hollie laugh and play together like normal children, unaware of their ticking timebomb plight.

      The two families from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, first heard about each other through a support group.

      Hollie's mum, Helen Carter, said that both children had been diagnosed with the junior version of senile dementia after suffering prolonged jaundice at birth.

      'They were both taken to King's College Hospital in London after they were born, where the disease was discovered following tests,' she said.

      'One of the first symptoms of this is liver disease,' she added.

      Soon the children will take part in vital research in America in the hope of providing a lifeline to future generations of Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) victims - the official name for juvenile dementia.

      Selfless mothers Helen and Jodie want their offspring to leave a lasting legacy so their short lives won't have been wasted.

      They are preparing themselves for the slow nightmare of watching their little ones develop the on-set of the illness.

      Firstly, they will start to become clumsy, falling over and their memories will start to fade.

      This will be followed by their sudden inability to walk, talk or feed themselves.
      And, tragically, when the time comes for them to die, they are unlikely to even recognise their parents.

      While the women are powerless to halt the progression of the illness, they are planning to take them to the National Institutes (corr) of Health in Maryland for trials.

      Hollie's mother, Helen, aged 32 years, who is married to 39-year-old Pete, said: 'We are trying to raise funds for the trip because we have to do everything possible while there's still a flicker of hope.

    • The World's Youngest Principal

      From: Mercy Corps

      When I think about our first day distributing hygiene kits to displaced earthquake survivors, I will most remember the bravery of a 17-year-old school principal.

      On July 4 — a grey, rainy day in Sichuan Province that accentuated the plight of families living in tents — I traveled with Mercy Corps colleagues to Jin Hua, a town near the earthquake's epicenter. The place suffered terribly: at least 79 students and 11 teachers died when the primary school collapsed. Today, with help from the Chinese government and local organizations including our partner China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), survivors are doing the best they can to move on with their lives while awaiting more permanent housing.

      We met 17-year-old Zhang Yong after we had unloaded the truck and begun passing out hygiene kits, which contained two weeks of supplies for families, including: cleaning products, first aid supplies, toothpaste and toothbrushes. As curious schoolchildren waited in line to pick up kits on behalf of their families, a bright-eyed young man came up to us.

      "Do you remember me, Mercy Corps?" he asked. Some of us did. We had first made his acquaintance here on June 1 — Children's Day — as we were doing assessments in the area alongside CFPA. At that time, even though it had not even been a month since the earthquake struck, he had organized a small celebration for the village's displaced children. He and his friends had decorated the camp with little paper flowers and given away small toys, games and sweets that had been donated.

      So here we were, back in Zhang Yong's village to help. Over the course of the day, we found out more about what it takes to be the world's youngest principal.

      Before the earthquake, he was a student at one of the schools here in Jin Hua. That changed immediately in the disaster's aftermath: he was asked by displaced families to help create a temporary school. He gathered 15 volunteers, 13-17 years old, to get started. They salvaged a few desks, chairs, books and a whiteboard from the collapsed school and set up a new classroom in a long, narrow tent overlooking a rice paddy.

      Within a few days' time, he went from tent to tent to ask parents if they'd like their children to attend classes. Soon, he'd registered 54 youth — from kindergartners to high school students — in the camp to attend the new school. Zhang Yong's documentation is thorough: names, ages, parents' information and original village are all carefully written down.

      "Our goal is to keep these kids safe and on a routine, so they don't forget their studies or what life was like before the earthquake," he said.

      Zhang Yong will soon return to a rebuilt school to continue his studies. But he said that, now, he understands teachers more than ever because he knows how difficult it is to manage students and run a school. He hopes to use this knowledge to contribute to the reconstruction of his hometown.

      That day, we weren't the only admirers of the youngest principal in the world. One of those traveling with us for the day — 53-year-old school principal Ning Xingcai, who is also leading recovery and rebuilding efforts — gave him high praise

    • Treating Thousands of Malnourished Children In Ethiopia

      In the past month Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has admitted more than 4,000 severely malnourished children into its nutritional programs in the Oromiya and Southern Nations and Nationalities People’s regions (SNNPR) of southern Ethiopia. On May 13, MSF set up a stabilization center to provide 24-hour medical care to severely malnourished children suffering from complications such as malaria or pneumonia in Ropi, Oromiya region. Since then two more centers have been set up in Senbete Shinquille and Shashemene, Oromiya region. In total 927 children have been admitted to these three centers, with 290 currently receiving care.

      Many of them are suffering from kwashiorkor—a form of edema caused by malnutrition, which manifests in liquid retention in the legs and feet. Kwashiorkor is a serious condition that can lead to death from heart failure or other complications.

      Children who are not suffering from complications are treated on an outpatient basis in outpatient therapeutic programs. They are provided with therapeutic food on a weekly basis, but are able to stay at home with their families. They return to these outpatient centers every week to be monitored by MSF medical staff and can be referred to a stabilization centre if necessary. In Oromiya MSF has eleven such outpatient centers in various locations throughout the region.

      On June 2, MSF teams also started working in the Kambata zone of SNNPR. One stabilization center has been set up in Kachabira district. As of June 13, 150 children were receiving medical care there. Four outpatient centers have also been established; two in Kachabira district and two in Hadero district. In the last two weeks, more than 900 severely malnourished children have been admitted into these programs and are receiving therapeutic food.

      In the coming days MSF will continue to expand its activities by increasing the number of outpatient centers in both Oromiya and SNNPR. In addition, MSF teams will continue to carry out assessments in order to identify the worst affected areas and respond where necessary.

    • Solar Power Windows to Replace/Augment Rooftop Solar Panels

      Great Solar News from TouchArt's friend Bill Brown up in Taos, NM about MIT engineers brilliant technology for solar windows to harness energy.
      Awesome.
      MIT guys say they can be available in 3 years.
      Let's use them for the One Earth bottle house design.

      _____________________
      Message from Bill Brown
      www.nmglobalwarming.com

      Hello, All -- Here is yet another reminder of the many rapid and spectacular advances in solar power technology -- in this case technology that could begin replacing and/or augmenting conventional rooftop solar panels within the next few years.

      "Imagine windows that not only provide a clear view and illuminate rooms, but also use sunlight to efficiently help power the building they are part of. MIT engineers report a new approach to harnessing the sun's energy that could allow just that."

      "Because the system is simple to manufacture, the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] team believes that it could be implemented within three years — even added onto existing solar-panel systems to increase their efficiency by 50 percent for minimal additional cost. That, in turn, would substantially reduce the cost of solar electricity."

      So, I offer this fair warning to all in the business to continue to be ready for -- and participate in -- a future of unlimited possibilities for clean energy solutions to our current dirty energy problems.

      Food & Health - Mental Health Issues
      Mission, South Dakota (AP) 7-08

      About 100 people attended a two-day summit in Mission on the high number of suicides on the Rosebud Reservation.

      At least six people from the reservation have taken their lives this year and more than 200 have talked about it, made plans to do it or tried.

      The local suicide task force released a 20-item plan that mainly focuses on tribal people helping themselves.

      It calls for training young people to spot the warning signs among their peers, using elders to teach cultural and traditional values and more outreach to parents to educate them on suicide prevention.

      The tribal chairman says a federal $200,000 grant approved by the U.S. Senate recently will be used to put people on the reservation to work with young people and families.

    • Depression strikes more Americans than cancer, AIDS, or coronary heart disease

      Depression strikes about 17 million American adults each year--more than cancer, AIDS, or coronary heart disease--according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). An estimated 15 percent of chronic depression cases end in suicide. Women are twice as likely as men to be affected.

      Many people simply don't know what depression is. "A lot of people still believe that depression is a character flaw or caused by bad parenting," says Mary Rappaport, a spokeswoman for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She explains that depression cannot be overcome by willpower, but requires medical attention.

      Fortunately, depression is treatable, says Thomas Laughren, M.D., team leader for psychiatric drug products in FDA's division of neuropharmacological drug products.

      In the past 13 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved several new antidepressants, including Wellbutrin (bupropion), Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine), Effexor (venlafaxine), Serzone (nefazodone), and Remeron (mirtazapine).

      According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), 80 to 90 percent of all cases can be treated effectively. However, two-thirds of the people suffering from depression don't get the help they need, according to NIMH. Many fail to identify their symptoms or attribute them to lack of sleep or a poor diet, the APA says, while others are just too fatigued or ashamed to seek help.

      Left untreated, depression can result in years of needless pain for both the depressed person and his or her family. And depression costs the United States an estimated $43 billion a year, due in large part to absenteeism from work, lost productivity, and medical costs, according to the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association.

      Diagnosing the Disease

      Medical professionals generally base a diagnosis of depressive disorder on the presence of certain symptoms listed in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The DSM (presently in the fourth edition) lists the following symptoms for depression:

      * depressed mood
      * loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities
      * changes in appetite or weight
      * disturbed sleep
      * slowed or restless movements
      * fatigue, loss of energy
      * feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
      * trouble in thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
      * recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

      The diagnosis depends on the number, severity and duration of these symptoms.

    • What Barack Obama means for a 2-year-old

      Many have opined about what Sen. Barack Obama’s phenomenal win in the Democratic presidential primary and his possible ascension to the presidency mean to this nation.

      Just the elementary historical facts are powerful enough: There has never been a black president. An African-American had never come close to winning a major-party nomination. None had been part of a majority-party ticket.

      What does Sen. Obama’s nomination say about race and race relations in America? What does it say about opportunity for people of color? Those are the kinds of questions many a pundit has tried to put into perspective.

      Of course, most importantly, Sen. Obama’s ascension says a lot about, well, Sen. Obama. It says his powerful gift of oratory and his message of change connected. His ability to build and manage an extraordinary campaign network and to raise funds is superior. His idealism that America can unite beyond race and politics and age worked.

      As I’ve considered Sen. Obama’s accomplishment, I’ve determined the most profound impact he’s had — not considering the possibility of him becoming president and proving to be one of our better ones — is on our future more than our present or our history.

      I didn’t grasp that until I took my 2-year-old to the doctor last week and he took a vision exam. It was through young Alexander’s eyes that I saw how important this moment in time could be.

      The nurse administering the exam pointed to different shapes and images on a chart, asking Alexander to identify each. One of the recurring images was that of a flag. It wasn’t an American flag, but a flag just the same.

      To a 2-year-old, a flag is a flag, right? Alexander is most familiar with the U.S. flag. When the nurse pointed to the flag, he answered confidently.

      “Barack Obama,” he said, pronouncing it as best as a 2-year-old could.

      “What did you say?” she asked.

      “Barack Obama.”

      As she went through the chart, she once again came to the flag.

      “Barack Obama.”

      “Do you know what he’s saying?” I asked her.

      “No.”

      “He’s saying Barack Obama.” Why? Because he was making an association. Most times when he’s seen Sen. Obama on TV, the Democratic nominee has been standing in front of the U.S. flag.

      Whether Sen. Obama wins the presidency or not, he has had an untold effect on the future and psyche of America.

      My son will live a lifetime in which he knows an African-American can ascend to the highest levels in this country. He won’t think it odd for a black man to seek to lead a nation. He as well as many white, Asian, Hispanic and other children, whether they like the candidate or not, won’t think it odd or a novelty to see a black man standing in front of the American flag — the ultimate display of patriotism, despite misguided and mean-spirited efforts to paint Sen. Obama as being otherwise — articulating his concerns and love for his country.

      Because of Barack Obama, many of our children won’t grow up with as many of the psychological bruises those before them might have endured.

      I grew up being told that I could one day be president. But much of what I saw and heard suggested otherwise. I saw and experienced the discrimination. Blacks only secured the right to vote in my lifetime. I saw many black kids in school being steered away from advanced courses and training that would have prepared them to shoot for higher goals.

      Not only does Sen. Obama’s feat help shape a 2-year-old’s thoughts about himself and the world around him, but it affects so many others, from high-schoolers to college students to older folks.

      Think of the many people, particularly older citizens, who had determined they would never live to see a black president. Scarcely 200 years since the end of the slave trade, there’s a good chance it could happen.
      Many have opined about what Sen. Barack Obama’s phenomenal win in the Democratic presidential primary and his possible ascension to th... more

    • Help Save 1-800-SUICIDE

      As 1-800-SUICIDE marks its tenth anniversary this year, the hotline needs your help. It was founded in 1998 by Reese Butler in memory of his wife, Kristin who had committed suicide. The Kristin Brooks Hope Center has helped almost three million callers connect to help and hope.

      As they enter their second decade of service to the public, continued support is needed to ensure that the confidentiality of every caller is protected. Because they are totally privately funded, they need to prove to the government that they are capable of supporting 1-800-SUICIDE to keep control of the line from being taken over by the federal government.

      The money you donate will not only be used to pay the phone bill that connects about 50,000 callers each month to the Hopeline Network, but will also be used to pay for training of online crisis counselors who will provide the same support via online counseling. This is where the young people of today reach out for help. The success of 1-800-SUICIDE is based on individuals in crisis knowing that any personal identifiable information is kept strictly confidential.

      The Hope Center’s volunteer staff and Board remain committed to preserving confidential suicide prevention programs. Your action today assures their sustainability!

      The Kristin Brooks Hope Center and its national 1-800-SUICIDE hotline is a great asset to our society – one of those private-sector initiatives called a “point of light.” For reasons of their own, certain officials within the government tried to snuff that light. With your help and support together we can prevent that tragedy from occurring and help the Hopeline achieve success in liberating 1-800-SUICIDE from government control permanently.

    • From seeds of suicide to seeds of hope

      The increasing costs of production and the falling farm prices that go hand in hand with globalisation and corporate hijack of seed supply, combined with the decline in farm credit is putting an unbearable debt burden on farmers. The lure of huge profits linked with clever advertising strategies evolved by the seeds and chemical industries are forcing farmers into a chemical treadmill and a debt trap. It has been witnessed that across the country, farmers are taking the desperate step of ending their life. The pesticides, which had created debt, also became the source of ending indebted lives. More than 150,000 farmers have committed suicide in India due to distortions introduced in agriculture as a result of trade liberalisation. More than 20,000 farmers have committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh alone. After the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July 2006, the suicide has increased alarmingly, reaching more than 1400 with debt trap cotton farmers putting an end to their lives in Vidharbha region alone.

      snip

      Apart from providing guidance and help to the farmers for the revival of agriculture, Navdanya, under the "Asha ke Beej" (Seeds of Hope) program, distributed the indigenous variety of seeds to the farmers and encouraged them to shift to organic and sustainable agriculture. More than 6000 farmers were distributed indigenous seeds.

      Navdanya also realized that one of the crisis farmers were facing was a seed famine created by Monsanto. Navdanya therefore started a seed bank in Kalaspur village. And on 2nd and 3rd June seeds were distributed from the seed bank in villages in Vidharbha.

      Navdanya is committed to ending the vicious cycle of violence in agriculture, which is leading to farmers' suicides. We are committed to strengthening the virtuous cycles of peace based on cooperation with nature and among communities to promote a sustainable and life enhancing food system.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      People taking it upon themselves to fight Monsanto and give people hope gives me hope. Dr. Vandana Shiva is a woman who has been fighting for farmers and women, and against Monsanto and corporate ownership of seeds and resources including water for years. She is a heroine whom I personally love and respect very much for her tireless work on behalf of others.
    • Barack Obama: A Manner of Thinking
      This very detailed article examines the conceptual manner in which Barack Obama presented his broad visions for America in speeches that he gave during the early phase of his presidential campaign. The evolution of Obama's thought processes since having become the Democratic presidential nominee is contrasted, from a psychological perspective, to the nature of his earlier conceptualizations.
      This article includes many great, high-quality photographs. In addition to the written review detailing the evolution of Obama's thinking, five video are presented to illustrate the changes.
    • Bank Beat's up the little Guy
      It must be nice. I mean it must be nice to own a bank. Have the government on your side and not have to answer for some of the things you do. This is the News on this Factual Story not some BS that is just being posted. A Sub Contractor did a job for a Contractor. Which was, and is Financed by Bank of America. The owner of the property went belly up along with many others in the US in the current market. The Bank Had X,Y & Z dollars set aside for this project. When the owner defaulted on the closing of the loan Bank of America of course stopped all funding to the project and under forecloser law in the greater state of Florida. The 1st mortgage cancel's all other debt out and the other people laying claim to the property for payment under the forecloser proceddings in the greater state of Florida are for lack of a better word Screwed. Thats right even if you lien the property sue, and win in a court of law. The bank will not settle the debt's until after their mortgage is satisfied first. This could drag out for months even years. We will give you one good guess who the Bank is that is taking advantage of this law in particular. That's right good old Bank of America. Way to screw the little people guys. Owe I forgot you guys are in business because of the little guys. If you think this law needs to be reformed please chime in and let you voice be heard. The money was ear marked for this job from the beginning, and we want to know what you think. We are sorry to say it is just one more bleeding example of how the rich, privleged and powerful get protected by our government. If you work hard and do good you should be paid what is justly yours.
