    • Medical marijuana list released

Angry telephone calls started coming in to the state Department of Public Safety almost as soon as the June 27 issue of the Hawai'i Tribune-Herald hit the streets.

A front-page article on medical marijuana mentioned that the department had provided a database with patient names and addresses, the locations of their plants, their certificate numbers, and their prescribing doctors.

The breach of privacy was an inadvertent mistake, and the newspaper did not name any of the patients, but many were alarmed because the information is like providing a roadmap for a stash of legal pot.

    • Austria legalises medicinal cannabis cultivation

Austria's parliament, for the nation’s medical and scientific purposes, has adopted a new bill allowing the cultivation of cannabis. This will, of course, be under the Health Ministry's control.

The bill, approved by parliament during a late-night session Wednesday, will give the health and food safety agency AGES the exclusive right in Austria to grow the plant, which is otherwise categorized as a drug.

Michael Bach, president of the Austrian pain studies association OeSG, welcomed the new legislation, saying: "Any initiative that makes it possible to develop and provide new drugs for pain therapy is welcome."

"Substances drawn from cannabis have been used for medical purposes more and more in the last few years," he added.

Possession of or dealing in cannabis incurs a 6-month prison sentence in Austria.

    • An American pastime: smoking pot - TIME

The Netherlands, with its permissive marijuana laws, may be known as the cannabis capital of the world. But a survey published this month in PLoS Medicine, a journal of the Public Library of Science, suggests that the Dutch don't actually experiment with pot as much as one would expect. Despite tougher drug policies in this country, Americans were twice as likely to have tried marijuana than the Dutch, according to the survey. In fact, Americans were more likely to have tried marijuana or cocaine than people in any of the 16 other countries, including France, Spain, South Africa, Mexico and Colombia, that the survey covered. • New "Natural, No-Calorie Sweetener" Hits the Market

Not yet approved by the FDA and considered unsafe by some, the new sweetener is made from "stevia" - a shrub native to Paraguay. It will be marketed as a natural alternative to the array of artificial sweeteners widely available today.

It will be interesting to see if/how consumers react to this new additive. I suppose it will depend on the reaction of health authorities (?) and the media (!) to some degree.

    • Herb Effective Against Pancreatic Cancer

Nigella sativa (also known as black cumin) may be a potential solution to pancreatic cancer and could be the breakthrough that is needed to solve this complex problem.

This herb is popular across the Middle East and India, and is widely known in those parts to aid in a variety of disorders. From emphysema and asthma, to colic and cancer, this herb has a colorful and storied history that stretches far back in time, even to the Biblical era. With pancreatic cancer being the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, killing approximately 34,000 people each year, more research needs to be conducted on the effectiveness of this herb in treating this and other cancers. Though more empirical data is needed, Middle-Eastern folklore describes nigella sativa as one of the most potent healing agents, curing a variety of disorders, other cancers, and having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Sometimes, especially in the case of this herb, folklore is more than just exaggerated stories of indigenous peoples; it can actually be useful in everyday life and provide the much needed help that conventional practices do not offer. In fact, according to Arab proverbs, nigella sativa is quoted as having the ability to cure all disease except death. Though its properties in healing all diseases has not been empirically verified, if folklore is going to be a guide to health and wellness, the best herb to start with would be nigella sativa.

    • Can Burt's Bees Turn Clorox Green?

Clorox was willing to pay almost $1 billion for Burt?s Bees because big companies see big opportunities in the market for green products. From 2000 to 2007, Burt?s Bees? annual revenue soared to $164 million from $23 million. Analysts say there is far more growth to be had by it and its competitors as consumers keep gravitating toward products that promise organic and environmental benefits.

Burt's Bees maintains its founders? green philosophies. Employees? bonuses are based in part on how well the company meets energy conservation goals, and there are prime parking spaces for staff members who drive hybrid cars or carpool. It buys offsets for 100 percent of its carbon emissions and is working toward a goal of sending no trash to landfills by 2020.

Warning: Public health officials have determined that not breast-feeding may be hazardous to your baby's health.

"Just like it's risky to smoke during pregnancy, it's risky not to breast-feed after," said Suzanne Haynes, senior scientific adviser to the Office on Women's Health in the Department of Health and Human Services. "The whole notion of talking about risk is new in this field, but it's the only field of public health, except perhaps physical activity, where there is never talk about the risk."

"You wouldn't take risks before your baby's born," the advertisement says. "Why start after?"
