Owning A Gun Is Not the Answer
My name is Nichole. I am a Current Student Executive Producer at Northwestern. We have a high number of muggings and robberies on and off campus here, so I do worry about my safety walking around and to and from my house to campus. However, I do not feel that students should necessarily have guns on campus because I do not think that owning guns is the solution to safety issues. The goal is to work toward a safer environment, and increase understanding and awareness in order to decrease shootings, robberies, and so on. Though I do not know what the answer to the problem is, unfortunately; for me, owning a gun is not it. My name is Nichole. I am a Current Student Executive Producer at Northwestern. The Woes of Living Off Campus
Living off campus is a great experience. No RAs, your own room and bathroom, house parties, space to study, and the ability to cook your own food. But there is a down side, in addition to paying bill, how do your protect your house from being robbed?
Last year, my house was broken into along with as many as six other student houses and apartments. This article printed in the Northwestern school paper is all about a drug raid that lead to the recovery of a large amount of property stolen from local houses around my campus and the hopeful end to this string of burglaries!

Young, Gay, Homeless
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth often endure disproportionate hardships because of their sexual orientation; they not only face the obstacle of surviving on the streets but also the stigma of belonging to a sexual minority. Violence and harrasment in homeless shelters causes many LGBT youth to choose the streets. As a result, they suffer from higher rates of physical and sexual victimization, addictive substance abuse, psychopathological disorders, and riskier sexual behavior (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force 2007). To combat this problem, many cities have opened LGBT specific shelters, but Chicago has yet to follow. Since Chicago streets are dangerous and youth shelters equally so, many kids are left with no alternatives. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth often endure disproportionate hardships because of their sexual orientat... more

Tensions in Muslim America
This pod examines the strained race relations of a Chicago neighborhood through the eyes of a Palestinian immigrant named Fayez.
After a long period of Muslim homogeneity, the community of Marquette Park became a hotbed for drugs and gangs. Last year, Fayez was attacked by a gang of African-Americans and since then he has developed a feeling of resentment towards blacks that borders on racism.
Fayez plans to leave Marquette Park with his family along with many other Muslims to start anew in a more secluded community. A group of four Northwestern students went to the new community and talked with a storeowner there who had some great insight on why people are moving. We also interviewed a Muslim activist who believes leaving for the sake of being separate will be detrimental to the community. This pod examines the strained race relations of a Chicago neighborhood through the eyes of a Palestinian immigrant named Fayez. ... more -

"News at Seven" is a fully automated program invented at Northwestern University in Chicago. Starting with a topic, the software technology finds news stories, edits them for broadcast presentation, finds relevant background visual materials (e.g., videos and still images) and augments the primary text using sources such as blogs found on the Web. Together, these resources are then used to drive a set of animated characters who reside in a virtual news world the system creates for them. AMAZING.
