Georgia's Governor Delayed Asking For Gas Shortage Help, Goes to Europe!
Perdue Delayed Asking For Gas Shortage Help
Governor Is In Europe On Week-Long Trip
ATLANTA -- While other southeastern states were asking for help with gas shortages, Gov. Sonny Perdue waited a week before requesting a waiver freeing up extra gas for Georgia.
Officials in Kentucky asked on Monday, Sept. 15, for a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency to lift restrictions requiring special gas. It was granted the following day.
Virginia and Tennessee also asked for similar waivers after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike struck the Gulf Coast, knocking out oil refineries.
On Sept. 22, a week after Kentucky's request, Gov. Perdue sent a letter to the EPA. The agency granted the waiver for Georgia the next day.
The waiver from the EPA lifts restrictions requiring gas stations to sell reformulated gas in metro Atlanta and other areas of Georgia.
Critics said more gas would be flowing into Georgia if Perdue had acted faster.
“By not managing this, by not reacting, not working steadily with the EPA, not having this relationship, not maintaining it, it drags until there’s another crisis and who gets hurt are the working people,” said Rep. Dubose Porter, (D) House Minority Leader.
Distributors Channel 2 talked with said they gave Perdue’s office a heads up three weeks ago that the crisis would likely happen because of a one-two punch from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Add to that the fact supplies are normally low this time of year as refineries switch from a summer to winter gas formula.
“This is the same pattern we’ve seen of waiting too long. There’s got to be that leadership whether it’s transportation, education or here in a gas crisis,” said Porter.
“The people who would criticize that, they don’t understand the way we’re working with the EPA. We were talking with them everyday and timing the request so we could get a positive response,” said Perdue’s press secretary Bert Brantley.

The Best College Football Players come from the South
The first college football game was played 139 years ago in New Jersey, between Rutgers and Princeton, and the sport was dominated by Northeastern schools such as Yale and Harvard in its infancy.
By the middle of the last century the South had risen in college football, and these days there’s no question: If you want to win a national championship, it’s best to play in places where sunscreen is more important than snow boots, and the grits are better than the bagels.
Why? Simple. Because that’s where the best players are.
Since the Bowl Championship Series started crowning a national champion in 1998, Ohio State and Oklahoma are the only schools that play in cold weather to have won a championship. And it’s important to point out that Oklahoma borders Texas, which has more high school football players than any other state. Toby Keith's Pro-Lynching Publicity Tour Hits Colbert, CBS and More
I don't know what to think about this just yet. Some of the lyrics in his song "Beer for my Horses" play out as this:
Grandpappy told my pappy back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he'd done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street
For all the people to see
It doesn't necessarily talk about race but it is terrible to bring up a form of punishment that was used against Blacks and of course, with the Leo Frank incident, against a Jew. What do you think? A non-issue? No meaning in the song? Or is there something hateful in all this? I don't know what to think about this just yet. Report warns of AIDS ‘crisis’ across South
AIDS specialists are calling for a fundamental rethinking of HIV policy after a new report showed that infection with the virus was rising dramatically in the South even as it dropped everywhere else in the country.
The warning, issued this week by the Southern AIDS Coalition, a nonprofit partnership of government and private-sector programs based in Birmingham, Ala., concluded that AIDS was creating a health disaster in the South.
AIDS deaths fell or held steady in other parts of the country from 2001 to 2006, the last year for which complete figures were available, but they rose by more than 10 percent in the South, according to the report, titled “Southern States Manifesto 2008.”
The report, an update to a landmark 2002 report that identified the disproportionate impact of HIV and AIDS in the South, was based on data compiled by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state health departments and academic researchers. It defined the region as Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Among the findings:
* Although the covered area is home to only 36 percent of the nation’s population, half of all U.S. AIDS deaths in 2005 were in the South, and more than half of all Americans with HIV lived in the region in 2006.
* Nine of the 15 states with the highest HIV diagnosis rates are in the South.
* More than 40 percent of all new infections are in the South.
* Of the 20 metropolitan areas with the highest rates of AIDS cases in 2006, 16 were in the South.
“The South is faced with a crisis of having to provide medical and support care for increasing numbers of infected individuals without adequate funding,” especially among the young and among minority Southern communities, the report concluded.
“African-American women are 83 percent of all [new] cases that we can document,” said Bambi Gaddist, executive director of the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council and a member of the AIDS Coalition board of directors. “And the new epidemic is young people. They’re between 22 and 24.”

Anti-gay slurs painted on houses and cars in South Florida's gayest neighborh...
"Three homes and five vehicles were sprayed with anti-gay slogans in the 2800 block of NW 7th Ave in Wilton Manors early Friday morning.
One resident was using soap and water to wash out the anti-gay messages sprayed on his property that said "fag".
He explained to CBS4 Reporter Ted Scouten that he's not gay, which is all the more worrying why he was a target.
Another resident, Ron Helfrich, said his home and car were defaced, "They wrote gay on the door, in the living room, and on the couch."
''There's no reason for this to happen,'' Aaron Challancin said. ``We didn't do anything to anyone. We're normal people trying to live normal lives.
The incidents are being investigated by the Wilton Manors police department." "Three homes and five vehicles were sprayed with anti-gay slogans in the 2800 block of NW 7th Ave in Wilton Manors early Friday m... more -
South Carolina - not 'so gay' after all
An advertising campaign launched on the London Underground during gay pride week earlier this month has caused a political storm in South Carolina.
Posters, displayed at Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations in the two-week period surrounding the festival, were designed to promote a gay tour operator and to increase tourism to various US destinations noted for being gay-friendly.
News of the campaign and a poster with the tagline "South Carolina is so gay" reached the state late last week where it was condemned by Senator David Thomas. The state employee who approved the campaign has since resigned and Senator Thomas is calling for an audit of the tourism department's advertising budget, which this year runs in excess of $10m. The tourism department has also refused to pay the $5,000 fee for appearing in the campaign and has asked that the advertising be removed.
"South Carolinians will be irate when they learn their hard earned tax dollars are being spent to advertise our state as 'so gay,'" said Senator Thomas.
However, Ian Johnson, chief executive officer of Out Now, the gay marketing agency that created the campaign, claimed that the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department (SCPRT), "chased us to be included in the campaign late on. We had to buy extra panels at Covent Garden to include South Carolina. In addition, SCPRT flew Andrew Roberts, the CEO of Amro, out to South Carolina so that he could check that there were sufficient gay-friendly aspects to the destination before including it in the campaign. Places like Charleston and Myrtle Beach have quite strong gay and lesbian communities."
Armo Worldwide said they took the idea for the campaign to "several US tourism boards" late last year and "received a very positive response". They say the individual boards paid a cut-price fee to be featured, while they covered all other costs in a cooperative-style marketing campaign.
Other US destinations featured in Amro Worldwide's campaign - including Washington DC, Las Vegas, Boston and Atlanta – have not reported any such backlash. The Boston poster, which picked up on its status as capital of the first US state to legalise same-sex marriage, is thought to be expecting a huge gay-tourism boost if a ruling goes ahead to allow out-of-state gay marriages there as well.
Amro claim the adverts are enhancing the positive associations with the word "gay". "The expression 'That is so gay" [is often used] as a form of put down, not of gay and lesbian people directly, but rather as a general way to suggest that for something to be "gay" is negative or bad … This campaign will 'reclaim' the term 'so gay'," says their website.
South Carolinians, however, remain unconvinced. "We're so gay?" asked one baffled resident when the story was put to him by a local television journalist. "Nah, wrong state. Go to California." Volkswagen's First US Assembly Plant Will Be In Chattanooga, Tennessee
VW to build plant in Chattanooga
By: Mike Pare
Volkswagen AG will build its first United States assembly plant in Chattanooga, officials said today.
Europe’s biggest automaker said it will put a nearly $1 billion investment in Chattanooga’s Enterprise South Industrial Park.
The plant is expected to create 2,000 jobs. It is expected to open in 2011.
“The U.S. market is an important part of our volume strategy, and we are now very resolutely accessing that market,” said Martin Winterkorn, chief executive of Volkswagen.
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said he is “enormously pleased” by the announcement.
Mr. Bredesen and other officials including Volkswagen of America’s chief executive, were slated to be at Hunter Museum of American Art at 11:30 a.m. for an announcement.
“I believe Volkswagen chose Tennessee because of our shared values, our commitment to innovation and our strong respect for the environment,” he said.
Matt Kisber, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, said he could not be more pleased in the partnership between the state, VW and Chattanooga and Hamilton County government.
Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey said he has worked with four different city mayors and other officials with a vision of transforming the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant site.
Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield said VW and Chattanooga have a lot in common.
“Both are serious about environmental sustainability and 21st century manufacturing,” he said.
U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said the community has maintained its focus
Officials at the Wolfsburg-based company said the surging euro has pushed plans for a production facility forward. The 15-nation currency has hit record highs recently against the U.S. dollar, making goods exported from Germany more expensive in the United States.
Volkswagen recently moved its North American headquarters from suburban Detroit to Herndon, Va., outside Washington, to bring it closer to its East Coast customer base.
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, who landed in Chattanooga early today, said he is “enormously pleased” with the facility coming to Southeast Tennessee.
Erich Merkle, vice president of forecasting auto industry forecaster IRN Inc., said suppliers will build facilities to support the assembly plant.
Chattanooga beat out bids by Alabama and Michigan for the plant.
The announcement came Tuesday from Lower Saxony Minister President Christian Wulff, who sits on the supervisory board of Europe's largest automaker. VW to build plant in Chattanooga By: Mike Pare ... more -

John Lewis Deserves Americans Support in Atlanta Congressional Race
John R. Lewis, the son of Alabama sharecroppers, was born February 21, 1940, just outside of Troy, Alabama. He grew up in a time when African Americans in the South were subjected to a humiliating segregation in education and all public facilities, and were effectively prevented from voting by systematic discrimination and intimidation. While attending segregated public schools in Pike County, Lewis was compelled into action. The message came by radio broadcast. It was the voice of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr._ calling all to boycott the Montgomery Bus system following the arrest of Rosa Parks. The Montgomery Bus Boycott has been written into history as the major pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement by means of non-violence.
As John Lewis began to hear his calling clearer and clearer he furthered his education by attending the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Philosophy from Fisk University. As a student, he undertook a systematic study of the techniques and philosophy of nonviolence, and with his fellow students, prepared thoroughly for their first actions. Lewis, unwavering dynamic influence over his peers allowed him the opportunity to start organizing students and others to join the Civil Rights Movement following the direction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As the movement continued to gain momentum John Lewis joined the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) that would forefront the student action effort against Jim Crow across America.

Trick Daddy: Thug Life
Now that R&B singers are using it to define themselves, it’s pretty safe to assume the word “thug” has lost its original meaning. In 1997, roughly a year after Tupac Shakur passed away, Trick Daddy Dollars placed his image on a food stamp and took it upon himself to try and cater to an audience clamoring for a representation of thug life. The digital era may have ushered in the EBT card in place of the food stamp, and he’s dropped the “dollars” from the end of his name, but Trick Daddy still holds himself responsible for representing the thugs of the world.
After over a decade at the house he helped build, Trick is about to introduce a new generation of Miami artists to the game via his Dunk Ryders label. The true definition of a thug remains as hard to define as it was when Tupac shouted it out for everyone to hear. If it involves parenting, community outreach, mentoring newer artists and broadening your original goals while the money keeps coming in, then it’s hard to imagine ‘Pac would be mad.
