55DSL FW08 Collection Video: Low Noise High Quality
The graphic story of 55DSL's Fall Winter '08 Collection was inspired by hi-fidelity stereo equipment and twisted references to the late 80's. Quirky audio cassette graphics, as well as old LP covers, are corrupted with our usual irreverence. Besides the main theme, we still haven't freed ourselves from our habitual obsession with dynamic and abstract geometric graphics- sometimes softened up by mimicking a hand drawn style.

Born in the summer? Then you're less likely to succeed in education, says new...
Children born in the summer are significantly less likely than winter-born babies to go to university, according to a new report which challenges the belief that summer babies will catch up with their peers by their teens.
The reason for the summer-birth disadvantage is that those children have to sit important exams up to 11 months earlier in their lives than their autumn or winter-born counterparts, the report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says.
It proposes a number of reforms to ensure that summer-born babies are no longer penalised because of an “unlucky birth draw”. Chief among these is the suggestion that all school test scores should be adapted to take account of students' birth month, right up to GCSE level.
According to today's report, 37 per cent of girls and 29.6 per cent of boys born in September have started higher education by the age of 19. This compares with 35.2 per cent of girls and 28 per cent of boys born in August.
Fewer than 11 per cent of August-born girls enrolled at Oxbridge or another institution in the elite, research-intensive Russell group of universities by the age of 19, compared with 12.1 per cent of September girls. For boys the figures are 8.7 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively.
The problems associated with summer babies have long been recognised by parents, teachers and children themselves and are the direct result of the administrative convenience demanded by local authorities and schools when admitting children into reception classes at the age of 5. But the issue has gained new prominence in the past two years, after the publication of a number of studies suggesting that the summer-birth disadvantage remains with children through life.
Were you a summer baby? Did you do ok in school, or were you always catching up with the older kids? Were you a winter baby and infinitely cleverer than all the kiddies with July and August birthdays? Should children born later in the year be given special treatment in exams to make up for this perceived disadvantage? Children born in the summer are significantly less likely than winter-born babies to go to university, according to a new report which... more -

Wintertime in Montreal means snow fleet time. Some 5,000 employees in various machines zoom down thousands of streets and sidewalks to clear meters upon meters of snow every winter.

Juhyo - Japanese Monster Trees of Mt. Zao
They're out there lurking in the dark, in the desolate wilderness of winter -- the beautiful and eerie offspring of Yuki Onna, the Japanese snow woman spirit. They are the Juhyo, or monster trees. Every winter the trees of Mount Zao in the Yamagata Prefecture undergo a shocking transformation. From mild-mannered conifers, these trees become hulking monstrosities of snow and ice.
What makes the trees into monsters is a wintery cocktail of snow and ice shaken and stirred by a blustery freezing Siberian wind. The snow and ice cakes the conifer trees so completely that often the original shape of the tree is so distorted that's it unrecognizable as such. They're out there lurking in the dark, in the desolate wilderness of winter -- the beautiful and eerie offspring of Yuki Onna, th... more -

Snow makes Chi-town slow down
Just when Chicago residents were starting to enjoy the warm weather, the sun being out, and no snow on the ground; BAM! Mother nature hit them with a reality check.
A snowstorm hit the area last night dropping nearly 5 inches of snow over the course of the night on northeast Illinois. Regions south of Interstate Highway 88 and in northern Indiana can receive even almost 6 inches of snow.
The area was placed by the National Weather Service under a winter storm warning which will be in effect until this afternoon. In the meantime city and state agencies called for the snow plows to keep snow and ice off the roads and highways.
Meanwhile, everyone from Upstate NY laughs really hard at Chicago's freak out over 6 inches of snow. Just when Chicago residents were starting to enjoy the warm weather, the sun being out, and no snow on the ground; BAM! Mother nature... more -

BRRR! Half the U.S. is freakin' freezin'!
The temperature in International Falls, Minnesota, fell to a record 40 below zero Monday, just a few days after the northern Minnesota town won a federal trademark making it officially the "Icebox of the Nation."
It was so cold that resident Nick McDougall couldn't even get his car trunk lid to close after he got out his charger to kick-start his dead battery. By late morning, the temperature had risen all the way to 18 -- below zero.
"This is about as cold as it gets, this is bad. There's no wind -- it's just cold," said McDougall, 48, a worker at The Fisherman, a convenience store and gas station in the town on the Canadian border. "People just don't go out, unless you have to go to work."

Setsubun - Japanese Spring Cleaning Exorcism
Here's a vlog of me explaining the Japanese holiday of Setsubun which is like Groundhog Day, New Years, and Halloween all rolled up together. It's a day where Japanese seek to drive Oni or Devils from their homes by throwing beans at them. Oni don't like beans - makes them go blind apparently.
Also many temples and shrines have mami-maki which is where people throw beans and other items at gathered crowds. To catch these items is to bring you good luck all year.
This Setsubun a sudden snowstorm struck in Tokyo. A rather ominious sign as the Setsubun is a Spring Ritual and exorcising the devils is like driving Winter out. I think it was a sneak attack by the Setsubun Devils myself. However the ritual must have worked because the next morning the sun was out.
I plan to do a proper pod on this in the near future so stay tuned! Here's a vlog of me explaining the Japanese holiday of Setsubun which is like Groundhog Day, New Years, and Halloween all rolled ... more -
Setsubun: Japanese Drive Devils Out in Spring Ritual
February 3rd in Japan is Setsubun, a spring holiday that is like Groundhog Day, New Years, and Halloween all rolled up into one with a dash of "The Exorcist." On Setsubun, Japanese seek to drive evil out of their homes by tossing a handful of beans and saying "Oni wa Soto! Fuku wa Uchi!" - "Bad Luck (Devils) out! Good Luck In!" Also many people go to temples and shrines for mame-maki. Mame-maki is where people throw beans and other things to the crowds for good luck. Setsubun is one of my favorite Japanese holidays.
