Double Amputee Carries Olympic Torch To Vancouver
My name is Jay Gnospelius, better known as The 7 Million Dollar Man.
_
In October 2006 I was struck by an Amtrak Acela, severing my right arm and left leg above the knee. Through a series of miracles and local miracle workers, I rose from the tracks, learned to walk then run then bike then swim and finally chart a path to the US Ski Team and a bid for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympic Games.
_
The 7 Million Dollar Man philosophy is 'Human optimization through technology, athleticism, partnership, tolerance and love.'
_
I am currently seeking local sponsors, underwriters, transportation and product support as I move into my first off-season training effort on through to my 2010 trek to Vancouver. My efforts to date have produced generous support from a few key national sponsors, all proudly displayed on my website, the7milliondollarman.com. In turn highlight their contributions on my broadband television website as I direct my personal achievements to advocate for the Wounded Warrior Project, PTSD, and the Amputee Coalition of America.
_
I live and train in the Fairfield CT area with wife Aimilia, and my two sons, Aidan 7, and Luke 4.
_
If you or anyone you know might be interested in lending support to this paralympian in training, I'd be proud to make a connection.
_
Warmest Regards,
_

Legless photographer turns camera on gawkers
Born without legs, Kevin Connolly spent his childhood on the receiving end of countless stares from strangers, but he decided to turn the watchers into the watched. With the help of his camera, the 22-year-old student began rolling around the world on a skateboard capturing fascinating images of pity, curiosity and sadness. “The Rolling Exhibition” now features 32,000 photographs from around the world and has given Connolly some perspective. On his experience, the skateboarding snapper said, “Patting a legless guy on the head and telling him that he’s really inspirational… is probably the last thing you wanna hear when you’re trying to seriously work on a photo project.” Born without legs, Kevin Connolly spent his childhood on the receiving end of countless stares from strangers, but he decided to turn ... more

Study shows amputee pain is bettered by 'virtual massage'
An amputee could be "cured" of phantom limb pain by tricking the brain into reacting to the sight of someone else performing soothing, massage-like gestures, a researcher has found.
The paradoxical sensation of pain in a missing limb is frequently reported by amputees.
Working with US combat veterans, Vilayanur Ramachandran, Director of Center for Brain and Cognition at the University of California, San Diego conducted a series of experiments to better understand why these feelings of pain arise and how they might be eliminated. An amputee could be "cured" of phantom limb pain by tricking the brain into reacting to the sight of someone else performing soothing,... more -

Double Amputee Oscar Pistorius Barred from Olympics
Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee athlete, has been ruled ineligible to compete at the Olympic Games by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The findings of a two-day independent investigation into whether Pistorius's prosthetic running limbs constituted an unfair advantage over other athletes were announced this morning.
An IAAF statement said that the South African's "cheetah" running blades were technical aids and as such were in clear contravention of IAAF rules. This means effectively that he is banned from competing against able-bodied athletes.
Verdict is set to be appealed at Court of Arbitration for Sport after IAAF decision. Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee athlete, has been ruled ineligible to compete at the Olympic Games by the International Associatio... more -

"Take that beach" without music
*This version is minus music*
I am a veteran of Operation enduring freedom 06-07 and filmmaker
As a former soldier in a combat zone, I can tell you that I had a easier time dealing with the idea of dying than thinking of what would happen if I came back home damaged.
I would rather die quickly in a explosion but I knew there were many outcomes in a IED attack. One of them was losing my legs and this was my greatest fear.
While I was downrange in Afghanistan I saw a photo of an amputee (double, above the knee) sitting next to a surfboard on the beach. I was amazed, here was a vet who lost his legs yet overcame his physical limitations and surfed!!! It changed me profoundly. I was able to deal with my fear and I swore on that day that if I made it back alive, I would shoot a documentary on this and other veterans stories.
Here is the trailer/short I shot for the surf camp and this story is continuing...
