    • 400,000 gallon oil spill on the Mississippi river

400,000 gallons of industrial fuel oil dumped into the Miss. River. An 80 mile stretch has been contaminated, and is flowing into the gulf. Citizens are being told to conserve water as many get their water from the river. This could end up as another ecological disaster for the already suffering Gulf Coast region around New Orleans.

    • Tanker leaks Oil after Attack

A suspected pirate ship fired on a Japanese oil tanker today off the eastern coast of Yemen, leaving a hole from which hundreds of gallons of fuel leaked, officials said. No one was injured.

The 150,000-ton tanker Takayama was attacked about 270 miles off the coast of Aden in southwestern Yemen while it was heading for Saudi Arabia, its Japanese operator, Nippon Yusen K.K., said in a statement.

None of its 23 crew members — seven Japanese and 16 Filipinos — were injured, the company said. The vessel left the South Korean port of Ulsan on April 4.

Nippon Yusen spokeswoman Yuko Tsutsui said the attack left a 1-inch hole in the tanker's stern, which was temporarily patched after hundreds of gallons of fuel leaked.

    • South Korea battles it's largest oil spill in history

On Friday, an oil tanker collided with a barge carrying a crane which caused 10,000 tons of oil to gush out into the Yellow Sea.

They stopped the flow by Friday evening.

This is largest spill in S. Korea's history. The previous record was in 1995 when the Sea Prince struck a reef spilling 5,000 tons of oil.

    • Another Catastrophic Oil Spill, This Time off Russian Coast

PORT KAVKAZ, Russia -- More than 30,000 birds and countless fish have been killed in an "ecological catastrophe" wrought by thousands of tons of oil from a tanker that broke apart in a heavy storm near the Black Sea, the governor of the region said today.

Birds weighed down by thick coatings of the fuel oil hopped weakly along the shore or sat helplessly in the sand. Workers with pitchforks and shovels started the backbreaking labor of gathering up vast clumps of oil mixed with sand and seaweed.

The tanker was one of up to 10 ships that sank or ran aground in the storm Sunday in the strait connecting the Black and Azov Seas. The bodies of three sailors from a freighter that also broke apart washed up on shore Monday, and rescuers were looking for five missing crewmen, said Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Sergei Kozhemyaka.

The spill from the oil tanker was seen as potentially the worst environmental disaster in the region in recent years. It prompted criticism that many Russian tankers aren't seaworthy.

    • Russian Oil Tanker Splits in the Black Sea

A Russian Oil Tanker has split in half during a severe storm in the Black Sea, spilling 1,300 tonnes of fuel oil. A Russian official from the environmental protection agency Rosprirodnadzo said, "This problem may take a few years to solve. Fuel oil is a heavy substance and it is now sinking to the seabed."

There is also another tanker which has also sunk in the storm carrying 2,000 tonnes of sulphur. Fortunately, the crew has been rescued.

Russia and Ukraine are working together to deal with the accident, but the almost hurricane conditions are seriously hampering the rescue effort.

    • NY Oil Spill: 1950-?

Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a quiet residential neighborhood in New York CIty. But underneath part of the neighborhood lies the remains of an oil spill that goes back 100 years. Exxon Mobil and others have been working with the DEC since 1990 and have to date remediated half of the 9 million gallon spill. Still some argue that the clean up should be over by now and are concerned about potential health and environmental risks. The Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and the advocacy group Riverkeeper are both suing Exxon in hopes that they will step up the act and that some soil and vapor testing will be done. Exxon did some tests in 2005 and found no damage and these tests were approved by the DEC. Still the DEC is in the process of conducting their own soil test an those suing would like to see a comprehensive health study as well.
