Batala Empowerment
The Batala Percussion band is an all women international group consisting of 300 members worldwide. The band was originally founded in France in the 1990s and spread through to the UK, Belgium, Portugal, Spain and eventually onto Brazil.
The DC Chapter of the band is only a year old and now includes up to 45 members. Wanna join? You'd have to get on the waiting list first!

Blur man to run for parliament
Blur drummer Dave Rowntree is to run for the Labour party in the next general election and aims to 'stand up for the poorer person' as well as beat voter apathy amongst younger voters.
Rowntree will contest the seat in the Cities of London and Westminster Constituency, currently held by the Conservatives. The drummer has famously admitted he was addicted to cocaine in Blur's halcyon days in the '90s and is a staunch critic of the government's anti-drugs policies. Super Mario 2 has a great soundtrack. In this awesome rendition, though, Andrea Vadrucci proves that everything sounds better with percussion. We're also impressed by his drum set itself --- that thing is at least fifteen pieces.
The Italian drummer just plays his beats on top of the 8-bit Mario songs, but we love it. Vadrucci is clearly very talented. Swiss Chris is John Legends Music Director and Drummer and founder of SWISS, Saving With Instruments Samples and Soundz that helps people all over the world, recently doing a benefit for Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the nonviolent movement for human rights and democracy in Burma (Myanmar), and Nobel laureate who has been jailed most of the last 10 years for speaking out about freedom.
Swiss recently signed with CPR Recording as a producer, writer and artist and will be working on the revival of the Last Poets. The Last Poets is a group of poets and musicians who arose from the late 1960s African American civil rights movement's black nationalist thread. Their name is taken from a poem by the South African revolutionary poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, who believed he was in the last era of poetry before guns would take over.
The Last Poets have been cited as one of the earliest influences on what would become hip-hop music; critic Jason Ankeny writes, "With their politically charged raps, taut rhythms, and dedication to raising African-American consciousness, the Last Poets almost single-handedly laid the groundwork for the emergence of hip-hop.

The City of Indians
I am from Indianapolis Indiana. The city of Indians in the land of the Indians. At one time the population was rumored to be over 2,000,000 in the Ohio river valley with the bulk centered in the land that now is Indiana and Ohio. Many would be surprised to learn that there are still 40,000 Native Americans in Indiana and that there is also a growing populaiton of Indians of a diferent sort. East asian Indians and Sikhs in particular represent a growing percentage of the population and there are now over 10,000 in Indianapolis alone. The citys first public arts facility is earning our citys name by creating a celebration merging the two cultures for a true meeting of East and West. The exhibit will feature art from noted East Asian artists, cultural photography of both types of Indians, and Native American artifacts and regalia. The opening will feature Pow Wow dancers, Native American drumming and singing accompanied by world famous Bengali musician Badal Roy who is a Jazz/rock legend. Badal toured with bands like the Greatful Dead, played nine albums with Miles Davis, two with Ornette Coleman, One with Ritchie Havens, and also with Steve Gorn. Akrowa Dance Ensemble, Drumming in Kokrobite Ghana
This is a video of a rehearsal of the Akrowa Dance Ensemble based in Kokrobite, outside of Accra Ghana. The group has about 10 drummers and several dancers, three of whom were practicing their moves along with the group. Cultural dancing often involves playing out a story.
Toward the end of the video, there is an informal interview with Okoe Ardyfio, the founder of Akrowa Dance Ensemble. He has studied, traveled with, and currently works with Mustapha Tettey Addy, the renowned Ghanaian drummer and founder of the Academy of African Music and Arts (AAMA). In addition to leading Akrowa and traveling around the world performing, Okoe also teaches drumming and cultural dancing.

Tim Jackson, of the Concord Blue Devils, gives a great clinic on how to beat the life out of multiple sets of tenor drums. For you "musicians" (people who play something besides drums) it probably looks like a lot of blurry hands and mallets. You've got to trust me when I tell you that what he's doing is really hot.
