Women: know your place! Club bans women after they ask to change TV channel
A 125-year-old Conservative club has banned women from its sports room after one of them asked if the TV could be switched from golf to a music channel.
Her request prompted a complaint, and an immediate ban on women by the club's committee, which was eventually endorsed in a members' vote after bitter campaigning from both sides.
After a vote of 37 to 30, Hopwood Unionist Club, in Rochdale, Greater Manchester decided to maintain the bar on women from the sports room and allow them only inside the "middle room".
The club, which is affiliated to the Association of Conservative Clubs, only permitted women to join in 2003, though they had previously been allowed to play Sunday afternoon bingo (lucky things!).
Peter Burt, the club secretary, dismissed the complaints as sour grapes. He said: "There was more to it than the TV channel thing. It was a committee decision, now it's a members' decision. It was a democratic process and the vote was advertised, so everyone had the chance to turn up. As far as we're concerned that's the end of the matter. It's a men's club and always has been.
"If the vote had gone the other way the members would have accepted it. This sounds like sour grapes."
Can you believe that men-only clubs still exist in this day and age? Would you like to hang out in men- or women-only environments?

Policeman ignored 999 calls to visit prostitutes
A Merseyside police sergeant who was caught with a prostitute in a squad car has been given a suspended prison sentence.
For more than three weeks Karl Cliff was watched trawling the red light district of Liverpool and Wallasey while he was supposed to be on mobile patrol.
Undercover officers watched as the 42-year-old, who had more than 17 years in the police deserted his patrol and was seen visiting known sex workers.
Audio and video recording devices were even place in force vehicles to record conversations with known prostitutes.
Cliff, of Windsor Drive, Flint, was eventually arrested at 2.25am on August 7, 2007, with a prostitute in a deserted car park.
When officers pounced Cliff said: “I’m ***ed, aren’t I? Talk is quick on the grapevine.”
He admitted the charge of misconduct in public office.
Liverpool Crown Court heard he was suffering from depression and post traumatic disorder.
His barrister Donal Maguire said Cliff had been traumatised by the “harrowing events” he had seen while serving in the Royal Ulster Constabulary in northern Ireland between 1996 and 2001.
He added that the sergeant had an exemplary record during his 17 years service after joining the police cadets when he was just 16.
The Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe, QC, decided to suspend an eight-month prison sentence for two years ordering him to do 175 hours of unpaid work.
He said: “The commission of misconduct in public office is a serious offence. It inevitably involves a dereliction of duty and a breach of trust. The police service and the public have the right to expect the highest standards of conduct from police officers.
“Your actions have brought the police service into disrepute and ridicule.”
Judge Globe said Cliff had fallen under suspicion within days of joining Merseyside Police from Greater Manchester Police on March 28, 2007.
Soon after his arrival a known Birkenhead sex worker complained he was pestering her.
His colleagues also raised questions about his behaviour after he frequently headed to notorious red light districts.
Formal complaints were made and the police professional standards team decided to mount an operation. A Merseyside police sergeant who was caught with a prostitute in a squad car has been given a suspended prison sentence. ... more -
Control, Joy Division movie available tomorrow!
Filmed in stunning high-contrast monochrome, Control tells the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division. Director Anton Corbijn beautifully recreates the music, bleakness, and raw energy of the early days of Factory Records. I always had a soft spot for Joy Division but this film made me fall madly in love with the band again. Don't rent this movie. Buy it.

From CCTV to MTV: Paper on the Cheap
If bands could reach No. 1 on the music charts on the basis of ingenuity rather than sales, the amusingly irreverent, but unsigned The Get Out Clause easily would win.
Desperate to make a music video for their new single Paper, but with absolutely no money, the English band used footage of them playing in front of CCTV surveillance cameras that are deployed in and around their home city of Manchester to make the video.
Photographs, the music video of Paper and a video of the BBC interviewing the band are included. Just have a look at what they've done for yourself!! If bands could reach No. 1 on the music charts on the basis of ingenuity rather than sales, the amusingly irreverent, but unsigned The... more -
Ronaldo set for Madrid switch after Champions League final
...or so Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon would have you believe after Ronaldo's ambiguous comment to a Spanish journalist when asked if he would leave Manchester United for Madrid. Ronaldo said: "Let's see what happens after the Champions League final.''
But this story comes up every year and like past seasons I think it's fair to say we can dismiss it as Calderon stirring the media pot and Ronaldo making ill-advised but innocent remarks. The fact remains that although the United star is under contract (not that that means much these days) United wouldn't sell him for anything less than a record fee surely too much even for Madrid. Second, there's simply no one out there to replace Ronaldo so why sell him for any kind of money, you wouldn't be able to buy anyone to fill the void he'd leave (namely 30-plus goals a season).
It's a story that will get United fans anxious, but it'll be the same next year too after Ronaldo has another exceptional year at Old Trafford. ...or so Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon would have you believe after Ronaldo's ambiguous comment to a Spanish journalist when as... more -

Manchester Fire Leaves 100 Homeless
My neighborhood filled with smoke last night as a row of homes caught fire, leaving 100 residents homeless. Amazingly, no injuries. I've linked to the WMUR article discussing the incident, and am attaching some video I shot on my flipcam of the wreckage this morning. The network has footage of the actual fire, which is much more interesting than my day-after footage, but I figured I would get some shots on my bike ride to the bank this morning.
The fire began due to a faulty coffee machine. Lesson, people! Be very careful about appliances and fire safety!
AND get rental insurance.

Stupidity: A Guide To Safer Subway Surfing
The phenomenon of (always) stupid (usually) young men—often bored graffiti writers from the outer boroughs—surfing on the outside of subway cars has been admirably covered by the New York media. It's one of those evergreen, slice of life stories that publications can recycle every few years, as events warrant. Every so often, somebody dies riding on top of train, and the populace of the city remarks to itself, "My, how stupid. And possibly tragic."
And the, um, "sport "isn't confined to America. Not by a long shot! The phenomenon of (always) stupid (usually) young men—often bored graffiti writers from the outer boroughs—surfing on the outside of s... more -
