    • Mississippi Remains Fattest State, CDC Reports

The South tips the scales again as the nation's fattest region, according to a new government survey.

More than 30 percent of adults in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee are considered obese. In part, experts blame Southern eating habits, poverty and demographic groups that have higher obesity rates.

Colorado was the least obese, with about 19 percent fitting that category in a random telephone survey done last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 2007 findings are similar to results from the same survey the three previous years. Mississippi has had the highest obesity rate every year since 2004. But Alabama, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisiana have also clustered near the top of the list, often so close that the difference between their rates and Mississippi's may not be statistically significant.

    • 'Proven': vegetarians live longer

The battle has long been waged, and will certainly continue in spite of this study. Are humans designed/evolved to eat everything and at risk of malnutrition as vegetarians? Or is vegetarianism the healthy and ethical choice? The most impressive data arises from a study of 1904 vegetarians over 21 years by the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsche Krebsforschungszentrum). The study's shocking results: vegetarian men reduced their risk of early death by 50%! Women vegetarians benefit from a 30% reduction in mortality.

      Long-term Study of Vegetarians
The participants of the the German Cancer Research Center study included 60 vegans (no animal products consumed), 1165 vegetarians (eating eggs, milk but no meat) with the remainder described as "moderate" vegetarians who occasionally ate fish or meat. The health of these study participants was compared with the average German population. Living longer seems not to be exclusively related to eating meat, though, as the results for moderate vegetarians was not statistically different from those for vegan or strict vegetarian diets.

To the argument that it is not vegetarianism but a general interest in a healthier lifestyle which leads to such notable results, scientists reply with evidence that the majority of vegetarians do not cite health reasons for their lifestyle, but make their choice based on ethical commitment, environmental concerns or simply personal taste.

      Vegetarians and Malnutrition
Research by a team led by Professor Ibrahim Elmadfa at the University of Vienna found a much better than average intake of Vitamin C, Carotinoides, Folic acid, fiber and unsaturated fats. Where shortcomings may arise is for Vitamin B12, calcium und Vitamin D in a vegan diet. Astoundingly, however, study participants did not suffer from diseases, such as osteoporosis, typically related to inadequate intakes of these micro-nutrients.

    • Beirut cafe cashes in on 'terrorism' theme

The 'Buns and Guns' cafe in Beirut has seen a surge in sales since its owner, Yousef Ibrahim, started serving up 'rocket-propelled grenade' accompanied with 'terrorist bread'.

Instead of scratchy 60s tunes playing on repeat, diners are served up the sound of gunfire for their aural pleasure whilst they take in the surroundings decorated with camo nets, ammunition and of course, weapons.

Yousef is maintaining a lighthearted approach to it all though, saying, in a genius bit of last minute promotion, that the only way his sandwiches could kill anyone is by their generous proportions.

    • Someone actually BEAT the cinnamon challenge!

OK, we've all heard of the Cinnamon Challenge. It's basically a dare to eat a large spoonful of ground cinnamon powder. People say it's nearly impossible to swallow it without drinking something OR without coughing out a puff of red smoke.

      Tons have tried it.

Most end up with powder cinnamon all over the face.

And somehow, they all end up on Youtube.
      Like this guy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMDceZM8KRs

But a group of people, who eat the weirdest things by the way, actually beat the challenge!

(Note: I heard somewhere that the original dare was to do it in 30 seconds).

    • What's really in the food you eat?

Discovering what's really in the food you eat can be depressing. You've surely heard that Americans eat as much as two pounds of insects per year without knowing it. But that seems pretty benign compared with the other stuff you may be ingesting. Pesticides, rodent droppings, way more fat than you had ever imagined... Fortunately there are web resources to scare you / gross you out / educate you about what you're throwing down the hatch. This new information may not keep you from your favorite greasy spoon — nor should it — but it may help you choose some healthier or more sanitary options for your general snacking and dining. • Urban planning linked to rising obesity levels

It’s not only unhealthy eating habits that contribute to bulging waistlines, but also our urban surroundings, says a new study.

The study led by scientists from University of Alberta has established a link between urban planning and rising obesity rates.

Researchers focused their study over two key areas- economic environments and built environments i.e. the ways in which the neighbourhoods and the cities we live in are planned and developed.

“When we reviewed the evidence we found, for example, that lower-income neighbourhoods were more likely to have greater access to sources of high-calorie foods, such as fast-food outlets, and lower access to supermarkets or other stores stocking healthy foods,” said Kim Raine, lead author and director of the University of Alberta’s Centre for Health Promotion Studies.

“The report also found that a lower socio-economic status—which involves education level, income and employment—was often associated with increased obesity among both adults and children.

“Lower personal income affects the affordability of food and that has been shown to have the most consistent influence on what people eat,” he added.

They also found that accessibility to recreational facilities in and around neighbourhoods had a significant impact on increasing obesity levels.

A gecko in Madagascar has been recorded nodding its head at an insect called the plant hopper, to encourage it to offer pieces of melon. (Check out the video clip at the link).

This relationship has yet to be understood, but scientists believe that the insect stays near the lizard, larger predators will stay away.
