Most 'Walkable' U.S. City: SF Is A Step Ahead
The city by the bay is the most "walkable" in the nation, according to rankings set for release today by WalkScore.com, a service designed to help those seeking a less automobile-dependent life. The distinction encompasses a host of environmental, health and economic advantages.
WalkScore, a division of Seattle software company Front Seat, evaluated the 40 largest U.S. cities based on residents' proximity to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, movie theaters and other amenities. Hills were not taken into account in the rankings, just distance and concentration.
San Francisco scored an 86 out of 100, besting New York's 83 and Boston's 79. Seventeen of San Francisco's neighborhoods ranked 90 or above - considered a "walker's paradise" - including Chinatown, the Mission, Nob Hill and Haight-Ashbury. Temporary parks dominate parking spaces across the U.S.
PARK(ing) Day, a collaboration between San Francisco nonprofits Rebar and Public Architecture and the national Trust for Public Land is an event during which more than 40 cities across the country have seen countless groups take over parking spaces and turn them into an extremely wide variety of interpretations of the "public park."
PARK(ing) Day is a wonderful chance to spread the message that urban environments don't have to be a never-ending field of concrete and steel, and that even if you don't have a traditional garden, you shouldn't feel cut off from a life with green things.
On this third PARK(ing) Day--the first occurred in 2005 when Rebar set up a temporary park in a single San Francisco parking spot--the creative spirit is definitely in the air, and it's not just ordinary citizens who are getting involved.
In a way, PARK(ing) Day was a dress rehearsal for what Public Architecture hopes will be a series of permanent installations set up in urban streets.
Of course, even PARK(ing) Day had its rules. Those who had commandeered parking spaces had to pay the meters. At one point, at McLaughlin's sustainable rooftop garden, a couple of her colleagues noticed that a meter maid was coming.
"We'd better feed the meter," they said urgently.
But over at the temporary beauty salon, where there weren't any meters, but where the space was in a one-hour parking zone, Cara Buglil said the meter maid was simply driving by and honking happily at her and her fellow cosmetologists.

Bush May Ease Clean Air Rules For Nat'l Parks
The Bush administration is on the verge of implementing new air quality rules that will make it easier to build power plants near national parks and wilderness areas, according to rank-and-file agency scientists and park managers who oppose the plan.
The new regulations, which are likely to be finalized this summer, rewrite a provision of the Clean Air Act that applies to "Class 1 areas," federal lands that currently have the highest level of protection under the law. Opponents predict the changes will worsen visibility at many of the nation's most prized tourist destinations, including Virginia's Shenandoah, Colorado's Mesa Verde and North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt national parks.
The rewriting of air-quality rules would ease the way for the construction of 33 coal-fired power plants within 186 miles of 10 national parks, including Great Smokey Mountains, left, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Killing Them Softly (With Silencers)
Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park officials announced plans to thin the elk herd by taking them out with sniper rifles and subsonic rounds. This way, they won't associate dying with humans, which is good, I guess, since posing with the elk is a huge draw to the park. We need our wide open spaces.
Good for the mind, body and soul... not to mention the environment, our cities, and our communities.
"It was heartening to hear the health secretary, Alan Johnson, recently set out his plans to create "fit towns", which will feature improved parks and green spaces. As Britain's obesity epidemic shows no sign of abating, it's never been more important for people to have access to good quality, safe and attractive parks where they can take part in free, enjoyable and healthy activities."
