    • Spain rocked by bomb blasts

Three bombs have exploded in Spain, with at least two believed to have been planted by Basque separatist group ETA. No injuries were reported following the blasts in the north of the country. One bomb exploded outside a bank in Getxo, damaging a cash dispenser and breaking windows. Officials said the homemade device packed into a gasoline tin went off without warning at about 5am. Five hours later, an anonymous caller said ETA had planted four bombs on beaches in Laredo, Ris and Noja as well as at a golf course close to Noja. Police cordoned off the towns and a device exploded near Laredo's beach at around 12:15 pm. It went off on the seafront promenade in the Cantabrian resort. Later in the day a second bomb exploded in Lardeo. The most recent attack by the armed Basque separatist group happened on July 4. The organisation, which is fighting for independence in the Basque region, carried out a bomb attack against a telecommunications centre. • Terrorist watch list hits one million names

“America’s new million record watch list is a perfect symbol for what’s wrong with this administration’s approach to security: it’s unfair, out-of-control, a waste of resources, treats the rights of the innocent as an afterthought, and is a very real impediment in the lives of millions of travelers in this country,” said Barry Steinhardt, director of the ACLU Technology and Liberty Program. “It must be fixed without delay.”

“Putting a million names on a watch list is a guarantee that the list will do more harm than good by interfering with the travel of innocent people and wasting huge amounts of our limited security resources on bureaucratic wheel-spinning,” said Steinhardt. “I doubt this thing would even be effective at catching a real terrorist.”

    • Gitmo's youngest detainee revealed

Secret documents were unsealed this week showing for the first time the extent of Canada's federal government's knowledge of the treatment of Omar Khadr inside of Guantanamo Bay prison camp. Khadr is Canada's only prisoner detained by the United States at Guantanamo Bay.At age 17, Khadr was placed in a special program at the camp that intentionally deprived him of sleep, and moved him every 3 hours for 21 days in order to prepare him to speak to government officials. It is reported that the document release is just ahead of a release of video tapes of the interviews with those government officials that will give the first look at a detainee being questioned at the prison. From the Canadian news The Globe and Mail:"On a number of occasions, the teenager was observed crying uncontrollably, and claiming he was at least partly blind. He removed his shirt to show interviewers bullet wounds, one of them still seeping blood, that he had suffered to his back and stomach during a battle in Afghanistan. The documents show that:Mr. Khadr was subjected to what was known as a "frequent flyer program," which moves a prisoner from cell to cell every three hours 24 hours a day. The idea is to keep prisoners from resting, making them more susceptible to interrogation. A Foreign Affairs document states that Mr. Khadr was placed in the program prior to a set of interviews and “will soon be placed in isolation for up to three weeks and then he will be interviewed again.” The effectiveness of the method was questionable in the eyes of the Canadians."Certainly Umar did not appear to have been affected by three weeks on the 'frequent flyer' program. He did not yawn or indicate in any way that he was tired throughout the two-hour interview. It seems likely that the natural resilience of a well-fed and healthy 17-year-old are keeping him going."During the first Canadian visit, in February of 2003, Mr. Khadr recanted certain admissions claiming "all the information provided in his previous interviews was said only due to 'torture.'"During that same visit, Canadians agents questioned Mr. Khadr about his family. The cameras caught the teenager complaining about his wounds, his eyes and a shoulder, and dabbing “at a small spot on his shoulder that was seeping blood.”Foreign Affairs kept records of the visits under intelligence files marked "UBL" or "Bin Laden." The Khadr family once lived with the al-Qaeda leader in Afghanistan. A forensic psychologist told DFAIT that Mr. Khadr was "a Mama's little boy."(more...) • Senate passes no-warrant wiretapping bill. Kiss your rights good bye

The Senate Wednesday approved a bill to put new rules in place for intelligence agency eavesdropping on suspected terrorists.

Communication technologies like mobile phones have made the 1978 FISA bill out of date, supporters say.

The bill also effectively protects telephone companies from being sued for cooperating with a government surveillance program launched in the wake of the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington. The White House pushed hard for the provision, with a threat to veto the bill if it did not contain protection for phone companies.

The vote was 69-28, with Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois voting in favor. Republican candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona was not present for the vote.

President Bush said Wednesday afternoon he will sign the bill, calling it "vital" and "long overdue." Watch Bush praise the new FISA bill »

The bill, formally known as the FISA Amendments Act, updates the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. It will:

      Require the secret court set up to oversee FISA to review the surveillance of any targeted American whether the person is in the United States or abroad;

      Provide for the FISA court to sign off on procedures for removing the name of any American inadvertently captured in a communication with a foreign target;

Prohibit reverse targeting, which is when intelligence officials eavesdrop on a foreigner's communications overseas as a means to spy on someone in the United States.

      Close a loophole by explicitly establishing the 1978 law as the exclusive means for authorizing electronic surveillance;

Set up a procedure for federal judges to determine whether a telecommunications company can be sued for providing the intelligence community access to its networks without a court order.

The bill essentially grants immunity to the telecommunication companies, the opponents said, because all of the telephone carriers received government certifications saying their participation in the program was legal.

Obama was criticized for backing away from his early opposition to the bill by liberal bloggers and individuals commenting on his campaign Web site.

Before voting for the bill, Obama voted for an amendment offered by Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Connecticut, that would have stripped the language granting immunity to telecommunications companies.

Civil liberties groups have vowed to fight the legislation in court.

"This fight is not over. We intend to challenge this bill as soon as President Bush signs it into law," Jameel Jaffer, director of the ACLU National Security Project, said in a statement issued minutes after the Senate approved the bill. "The bill allows the warrantless and dragnet surveillance of Americans' international telephone and e-mail communications. It plainly violates the Fourth Amendment."

President Bush acknowledged in 2005 that he ordered the secretive National Security Agency to intercept communications between U.S. residents and people overseas suspected of having ties to terrorism. The administration says the program was authorized when Congress approved military action against al Qaeda after the 2001 attacks.

    • Saudi arrests 700 Islamists plotting 'oil attacks'

OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia has arrested 701 Islamists in the past six months on suspicion of plotting attacks on oil industry installations, the interior ministry announced on Wednesday.

Security forces "carried out several operations against followers of the deviant ideology and arrested a total of 701 people of various nationalities," said a ministry spokesman quoted by the official SPA news agency.

Of those arrested since the start of the year, "520 are still being held for their implication in the organisational and ideological plans of the deviant ideology."

Deviant ideology is the term used by Saudi officials to describe Al-Qaeda.

The ministry did not give the nationalities of those arrested but stressed that the masterminds lived abroad and were recruiting foreigners -- among them Muslim pilgrims from around the Islamic world -- to carry out attacks.

"Chiefs of the sedition abroad have engaged in recruiting nationals in Asian and African countries to carry out operations in Saudi Arabia, taking advantage of the facilities granted to the Muslim faithful to come to Mecca for the annual pilgrimage or to do the omra," or minor pilgrimage, the official said.

"The cells that have been broken up which were run from abroad were primarily targeting economic targets in the country," which is the world's second-largest oil producer and its largest exporter.

In one instance, the official said a cell had been broken up in the oil-rich Eastern Province that was controlled by African immigrants who had been seeking to recruit followers at oil installations.

A message purportedly sent to the cell's chief by Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri called for militants to collect money and promised to send jihadists (holy warriors) from "Iraq, Afghanistan and North Africa to attack oil installations and the security forces.

Without giving details, the official said the cell had begun planning an attack on "an oil site and a security target with car bombs."

The kingdom has been battling suspected Al-Qaeda militants since they launched a wave of shootings and bombings, many targeting Westerners, in May 2003.

Last July, the interior ministry announced that it had started forming special security units to protect the country's oil infrastructure from terrorist attacks.

In April 2007, the ministry said 172 terror suspects had been rounded up along with weapons and cash. Some of the militants were allegedly plotting airborne attacks on oil facilities and army bases.

Security forces thwarted an alleged Al-Qaeda attack against Saudi Arabia's massive Abqaiq oil processing facility in February 2006. Two members of the security forces and two assailants were killed.

    • IC acts against LTTE: 28 terror suspects arrested in Italy

28 LTTE terrorist suspects have been arrest by the Italian anti-terrorist police during a massive country-wide counter insurgency operation conducted on Tuesday (June 17), foreign news agencies report.

The 28 Tamils all from Sri Lanka were detained alleged for involving in activities and supporting the internationally banned terrorist outfit, LTTE, news sources said citing an Italian police statement. According to sources, about 200 police personnel were involved in the operation.

The massive counter LTTE operation by the Italian police comes in the wake of the Canadian government's decision to list the World Tamil Movement (WTM) as a terrorist organization, under the Criminal Code of Canada on Monday (16).

The LTTE is a ruthless terrorist outfit notorious for crimes against innocent civilians led by the terror psychopath, Prabakaran. In its pursuit for a mono ethnic separate homeland for Tamils since 1983, the outfit has killed and maimed over tens and thousands of innocent children, Tamils and Sinhalese political leaders in indiscriminate bomb attacks.

Meanwhile, defence analysts are of the view that the intensification of anti-LTTE operations by the IC recently is a positive gesture supporting the SL government's efforts towards eradicating terrorism.

    • Iraq urges US to stop backing MKO Terrorist Group

Iraq bans any deal with the members of the Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO), calling on the US to stop supporting the terrorist group.

"The Cabinet decided to ban any dealings with this organization by any Iraqi or foreign individual, organization or party,'' a statement said on Tuesday.

In the statement, the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said the Mujahedeen Khalq Organization is meddling in the country's internal affairs and supporting anti-government activities.

The statement warned that those who violate the order will face charges under the anti-terror law.

Earlier today, Iraq's main political blocs in the parliament demanded the expulsion of the MKO members from the country.

Before the US-led invasion in 2003, the Mujahedeen Khalq Organization had enjoyed Saddam Hussein's support.

After the US-led invasion of the country the US put the group's members under protection in a northern part of Iraq amid reports that they had been used for by Washington for espionage and violence-related activities.

    • Accused 9/11 mastermind wants death sentence

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said he would welcome becoming a "marytr" after a judge warned Thursday that he faces the death penalty for his confessed role as mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Wearing thick glasses and occasionally fussing with his turban or stroking his bushy gray beard, Mohammed seemed noticeably thinner in his first appearance since his capture in Pakistan in 2003. It was a stark contrast to the image the U.S. showed to the world back then, of a slovenly man with dishevelled hair, an unshaven face and a T-shirt.

Mohammed also sang verses from the Quran, rejected his attorneys and told Judge Ralph Kohlmann, a Marine colonel, that he wants to represent himself at the war crimes trial. The judge warned that he faces execution if convicted of organizing the attacks on America. But the former No. 3 leader of al-Qaida was insistent.

"Yes, this is what I wish, to be a martyr for a long time," Mohammed declared. "I will, God willing, have this, by you."

Mohammed and his four alleged co-conspirators each face death if convicted of war crimes including murder, conspiracy, attacking civilians and terrorism by hijacking planes to attack U.S. landmarks. The murder charges involve the deaths of 2,973 people at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania where passengers forced down their plane.

    • CIA cites gains against bin Laden

Al-Qaeda is facing setbacks globally, according to CIA chief.

Less than a year after his agency warned of new threats from a resurgent al-Qaeda, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden now portrays the terrorist movement as essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and on the defensive throughout much of the rest of the world, including in its presumed haven along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

In a strikingly upbeat assessment, the CIA chief cited major gains against al-Qaeda's allies in the Middle East and an increasingly successful campaign to destabilize the group's core leadership.

While cautioning that al-Qaeda remains a serious threat, Hayden said Osama bin Laden is losing the battle for hearts and minds in the Islamic world and has largely forfeited his ability to exploit the Iraq war to recruit adherents. Two years ago, a CIA study concluded that the U.S.-led war had become a propaganda and marketing bonanza for al-Qaeda, generating cash donations and legions of volunteers.
