A man trolls through web sites, searching for someone to fulfill his momentary fantasy. Waves of anticipation—he may find what he wants!—alternate with a nagging fear that he will be exposed as a sick freak. What would his friends and family think of him if they knew? A woman looks at her child, meanwhile, and feels crushed with disappointment. Her heart just doesn't swell for him the way it does for his sister. She anxiously tries to hide her preference, all the while berating herself for being a terrible mother.
Feelings or habits that are out of the ordinary are great fodder for art and entertainment, but they can cause anguish to those who can't understand—and don't appreciate—their own outre tendencies. Of course some people are proud to be twisted, and even cultivate strangeness: Half-blue-eyed, all-pasty-white Goth rocker Marilyn Manson surely doesn't spend much time moping around, wishing he were just like everybody else. But why do many others obsess over not being normal?
Paying attention to norms is how we stay in step with social expectations, says Dustin Wood, an assistant professor of psychology at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, who is interested in how personalities develop. "Normality is the barometer people use to figure out if they're acting the way they should be."

The documentary Susan for Now takes the viewer on a journey of discovery through what most people know only vaguely as a mysterious and taboo subculture: the world of sadomasochism.
The film is a first person account of a woman reclaiming her sexual freedom after a ten-year period of self-imposed celibacy and follows the filmmakers personal quest through the underground world of the sex positive community in Seattle. While Susan for Now is a memorably vivid and unflinching exploration of this widely practiced and yet little known genre of alternative sexuality, the film is equally notable for its revealing insights into the minds and hearts of articulate and sincere individuals from every walk of life, from lawyers, IT professionals, graphic artists, musicians and real estate agents to name a few. CNN's Quest A Very "Knotty" Boy
CNN personality Richard Quest was busted in Central Park early yesterday with some drugs in his pocket, a rope around his neck that was tied to his genitals, and a sex toy in his boot, law-enforcement sources said.
Quest, 46, was arrested at around 3:40 a.m. after a cop spotted him and another man inside the park near 64th Street, a police source said.
The criminal complaint against Quest said the park was closed at the time - something Quest should have known because of all the signs saying "Park Closed 1 a.m. to 6 a.m."
Quest was initially busted for loitering, the source said. Aside from the oddly configured rope, the search also turned up a sex toy inside of his boot, and a small bag of methamphetamine in his left jacket pocket.
It wasn't immediately clear what the rope was for.
