Cardboard bike, great for environment, not so good for rain?
A UK student has designed a cardboard bicycle frame that costs only £3 ($6) to make, which when coupled with the £12 ($24) wheels and chain combine to form 'the ultimate green machine.'
And as for the rain, the designer claims that although the prototype design still has a few problems, rain isn't one of them!

TRUCK THAT RUNS ON WOOD!!
a crazy looking contraption in the bed of the truck composed of ducting, PVC pipe, a 50 gallon drum, an old furnace, and of course, a lot of duct tape among other many other things.
I had to ask him what in the world was on the back of his truck. It was a wood burning oven that catches the combustible fumes from the wood coals, condenses any moisture, then feeds the fumes into the engine to make it run. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it.
Apparently this is a concept that was engineered back in WWII when there were fuel supply shortages. I have never heard of it.
Probably would not be good if we all did it, but at least I know there is someone in town with a truck that will run no matter what happens with gasoline.

Google Maps can run your life
Google has updated its Map service for mobile phones to help give directions to where you want to go by transit as well as walking or in a car.
The Version 2.2 update, which contains features not even available on the desktop version yet, will show information on bus, train and ferry routes, including departure times and even how much the trip will cost.
Where am I?
A person lost in the big city can use the “My Location” function to find themselves, which can be achieved through mobile mast triangulation in the absence of GPS on the unit.
This promises to have benefits in terms of safety, especially late at night in an unfamiliar part of town. Speaking of which, Google Maps will also let you know when the last train/bus/boat home is, so you know how late you can party.
The service is mainly available in North America now, though Google says it can be used in “over 50 countries.” Google has updated its Map service for mobile phones to help give directions to where you want to go by transit as well as walking or ... more -
No-frills carriers can weather the storm, says easyJet
"Budget airlines will be the biggest victims of soaring fuel costs as fares rise across the industry, the global aviation body warned today.
The head of the International Air Transport Association warned passengers that the era of cheap air travel, spurred by the no-frills carrier phenomenon, will be ended by the oil price spike. The fuel bill for the global airline industry could rise by $50bn (£25.5bn) this year and has put businesses in "emergency mode", said Giovanni Bisignani, Iata chief executive.
Echoing recent comments by British Airways chief executive, Willie Walsh, Bisignani said low-cost airlines face the greatest shock because their business models rely on cheap fares.
"When you add $50bn to the bill, somebody has to take care of the cost. Clearly the fare will have to reflect a cost structure that is different. In this picture, the low-cost carrier will be more affected," he said. Bisignani added that fuel represents 50% of costs for some no-frills carriers, such as Ryanair, while it accounts for 34% of the cost base among Iata members.... BBC NEWS | England | London | Transport drinking ban launched
The alcohol ban on London's transport system has started, after a night of partying on the Underground during which 17 people were arrested.
Six stations had to be closed as thousands of people gathered on the network in advance of the ban.
Passengers are now barred from having open containers of alcohol on the Underground, London buses, Docklands Light Railway and trams.
Union leaders have described Mayor Boris Johnson's policy as "half-baked".
The ban will not be enforced with extra policing - instead a "softly softly" approach is being used, where it is hoped the ban will be self-policed, in much the same way as the smoking ban.
"Notices, staff advice and announcements will make the alcohol ban clear," said a Transport for London (TfL) spokesman.
"If necessary, our staff can call on the support of 2,500 dedicated transport police and community support officers across the transport network."
But Bob Crow, of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said: "We will support any measure that will make our members' working lives safer and more pleasant, but the ban has been poorly thought through, is being implemented in haste and could put our members in greater danger." Modern Transportation and Infectious Disease – MWV15
From your local bus route to international air travel, infectious diseases can spread across the globe in a matter of hours. In this video podcast episode filmed at the Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C., Stephen Eubank from the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute of Virginia Tech and Daniel Lucey from Georgetown University discuss the role of transportation in the spread of disease and examine the effectiveness of various measures to curb transmission.
Stephen Eubank, Ph.D., is a project director at the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute of Virginia Tech. His research focuses on modeling and simulating the spread of disease and regional transportation, and the analysis of complex systems.
Daniel Lucey, M.D., M.P.H., is an adjunct professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University, where he is co-director of the master of science program in biohazardous threat agents and emerging infectious diseases. In recent years, his teaching focus has been on SARS, avian flu, and the threat of pandemic human influenza.

It's a bird, It's a plane, It's China's 'Super-Ministries'!
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao unveiled today a bureaucratic revamp he hopes will foster greener, more efficient government, but experts said it was unlikely to end turf wars over industry, energy and pollution.
The reforms herd together dozens of agencies, creating "super-ministries" for industry, transport, housing and construction and the environment, and bring food and drug safety back under the Health Ministry after a series of damaging scares.
Anyone think that these "super-ministries" may actually be a more efficient way to run a government?! Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao unveiled today a bureaucratic revamp he hopes will foster greener, more efficient government, but experts s... more -
