We Want A Dead Simple Web Tablet For $200. Help Us Build It.
Here’s the basic idea: The machine is as thin as possible, runs low end hardware and has a single button for powering it on and off, headphone jacks, a built in camera for video, low end speakers, and a microphone. It will have Wifi, maybe one USB port, a built in battery, half a Gigabyte of RAM, a 4-Gigabyte solid state hard drive. Data input is primarily through an iPhone-like touch screen keyboard. It runs on linux and Firefox. It would be great to have it be built entirely on open source hardware, but including Skype for VOIP and video calls may be a nice touch, too.
If all you are doing is running Firefox and Skype, you don’t need a lot of hardware horsepower, which will keep the cost way down. Here’s the basic idea: The machine is as thin as possible, runs low end hardware and has a single button for powering it on and off, h... more -
Jeff Han: The Amazingly Orgasmic Pixel Guy
When Steve Jobs first introduced Apple’s iPhone at Macworld last year, the feature that evoked the most excitement was its touch-screen interface, allowing more than one touch at a time. The multi-touch technology added innovative new functions, such as allowing the user to easily zoom in and out of pictures and web pages by pinching the screen with two fingers.
But now, a more significantly advanced version of the amazing power of multi-touch technology has been unleashed upon screens much larger than those on the iPhones. Jeff Han, a research scientist at New York University, has developed Pespective Pixel. It's a relatively inexpensive technology that makes large multi-touch screens, which can accommodate 10, 20, or even more fingers.
This article includes photographs and two amazingly spiffy videos (one gives a fascinating music video demonstration of Han’s "Pespective Pixel", the other is a presentation that he made of “Perspective Pixel” at the annual TED Conference in Aspen, Colorado). Silicon insider: why touch screen is king
For a peek at the future of technology, look no further than your fingertips. When it comes to investing in the future of high-tech, I would suggest buying stock in a screen cleaner company. It's been a slow week for technology news, so most of the attention has focused upon D6 -- the sixth annual All Things Digital Conference being held in Carlsbad, Calif., and hosted by Walter Mossberg and Kara Switzer of The Wall Street Journal.
D6 is rapidly becoming the pre-eminent event for leaders in the tech industry, not least because it's a way to legally cozy up to two of the pre-eminent figures in business journalism without either side being accused of conflict of interest. As such, it has become a very safe venue for companies such as Apple and Microsoft to offer early glimpses of upcoming products.
With Apple staying undercover this year with its new (solar-powered?) iPhone, D6 has turned into a promotional platform for Microsoft, which is desperate to show that it is not as operationally inept and technologically out-of-touch as the world has concluded it is after the endlessly awaited and ultimately disappointing introduction of its Vista operating system. For a peek at the future of technology, look no further than your fingertips. When it comes to investing in the future of high-tech, ... more -
Sprint unveils iPhone killer Samsung Instinct
Sprint Nextel Corp. has announced its iPhone killer, the Samsung Instinct. The device features a touch-screen, and looks similar to the design of the popular Apple phone. The Samsung Instinct will be offered on the Sprint network and will feature a virtual keyboard which will appear in a very similar manner to how the iPhone keyboard works. There will also be a built-in Web browser as well as the ability to play music and video on the device.
Sprint stated that the Instinct will release this coming June. The wireless company has stated that the service plans for the Instinct will be similar to how AT&T sets up their Apple iPhone plans. Those who want to buy the Instinct will have to sign up for at least a $69/month plan. This will include unlimited texting as well as Internet access. The plans AT&T and Apple offer for the iPhone all include unlimited data, or Internet access as well.
The Instinct will ship with a replacement battery as well as a 2GB memory card. There is no word yet on the exact pricing of the Instinct, but it is believed to be under $300.
