    • Notting Hill carnival sees 307 arrested

Despite pro-active policing, this year's Notting Hill Carnival still saw an increase in the amount of troublemakers arrested, a total of 307.

Despite most of the two-day celebrations been peaceful, reports claim that several officers were hurt during clashes with a large group of troublemakers, who were throwing bottles at the police.

Most of the arrests made were for drugs, weapons, public disorder, assault and also two for robbery.

I was there on Sunday and have to say the police presence was pretty strong, much stronger than last year. Think the police' pro-active approach prevented any more trouble?

    • Possible plot on Obama?

Denver authorities said last night that a number of arrests had been made of individuals in connection with firearms offences in the city which is hosting the Democratic National Convention.

However they refused to immediately confirm local media reports that linked the arrests to a possible attempt on the life of the Barack Obama who is due to make his key address to the conference on Thursday.

Local TV station KCNC-TV reported that four people had been picked up by police following a traffic stop in the Denver suburb of Aurora. That arrest, which took place on Sunday morning, saw a 28-year-old man taken into custody after he was spotted driving erratically in a rented pickup truck.

The TV station, quoting police sources, said that two high-powered rifles with scopes, walkie talkies, camouflage clothing, driving licences and the drug methamphetamine were found in the truck. Police then traced him back to a local hotel, The Cherry Tree, which led to further arrests, including a man injured while jumping out of a window in order to evade arrest. The wounded man was believed to have ties to white supremacist organisations and was wearing a ring with a swastika, the station said. KCNC-TV said that the men had told police that they intended to kill Obama.

The Denver Post newspaper said that only two men had been arrested, but reported that a news conference was being scheduled for tomorrow afternoon to discuss the case. It reported that authorities were more sceptical of any organised plot to kill Obama.

US officials also told the Associated Press that it was too premature to say if there was any direct threat to Obama. 'It's premature to say that it was a valid threat or that these folks have the ability to carry it out,' an unnamed US government official told the Associated Press. 'It could also turn out that these were nothing but a bunch of knuckleheads, meth heads,' the official added.

Obama, who is seeking to become America's first black president, has been the subject of intense security, unusual even for a presidential candidate. Though specifics have been rare, the Secret Service has been monitoring the activities of white supremacist groups especially on the internet.

The Shiite-dominated government in Iraq is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols, the groups of former insurgents who joined the American payroll and have been a major pillar in the decline in violence around the nation.

In restive Diyala Province, United States and Iraqi military officials say there were orders to arrest hundreds of members of what is known as the Awakening movement as part of large security operations by the Iraqi military. At least five senior members have been arrested there in recent weeks, leaders of the groups say.

    • Cinderella and cohorts arrested in Disneyland

ANAHEIM, California (AP) -- Cinderella, Snow White, Tinkerbell and other fictional fixtures of modern-day childhood were handcuffed, frisked and loaded into police vans Thursday at the culmination of a labor protest that brought a touch of reality to the Happiest Place on Earth.

"Tinkerbell" and other Disney characters were handcuffed Thursday in a protest outside the gates of Disneyland.

The arrest of the 32 protesters, many of whom wore costumes representing famous Disney characters, came at the end of an hour-long march to Disneyland's gates from one of three Disney-owned hotels at the center of a labor dispute.

Those who were arrested sat in a circle on a busy intersection outside the park holding hands until they were placed in plastic handcuffs and led to two police vans while hundreds of hotel workers cheered and chanted.

The protesters were arrested on a misdemeanor count of failure to obey a police officer and two traffic infractions, said Sgt. Rick Martinez of the Anaheim police. They were cited and released, Sgt. Chris Schneider said.

Bewildered tourists in Disney T-shirts and caps, some pushing strollers, filed past the commotion and gawked at the costumed picketers getting hauled away. The protest shut down a major thoroughfare outside Disneyland and California Adventure for nearly an hour.

    • Israel: Al Qaeda-linked suspect may have targeted Bush

Israeli authorities have arrested six Arabs suspected of trying to build an al Qaeda-linked cell -- including one person who allegedly asked about targeting President Bush's helicopter.

Shin Bet, Israel's security service, said in a news release that a 24-year-old student of Hebrew University in Jerusalem decided in January to try to attack a helicopter of a senior official landing on a helipad, and took video of the helipad with a cell phone. Bush used that helipad -- near the dormitories at the university's Givat Ram campus -- during a visit in January, it said.

The student, identified as Muhammad Najam, allegedly turned to an Internet forum identified with al Qaeda and asked about the possibility of targeting an aircraft carrying Bush, Shin Bet said.

There was no immediate public statement on Najam's behalf.

Shin Bet said the six people arrested have been indicted on various charges, including membership in a terrorist organization.

The six include two Israeli Arabs and four Palestinians from East Jerusalem, all "suspected of planning to set up an al Qaeda-linked infrastructure," the news release said.

The suspects used the Internet to go to radical Islamic Web sites, including some identified with al Qaeda, it said, adding that the computers of some of those arrested had been used to download from the Internet instructions for preparing bombs.

    • Aussie TV reporter in Singapore drug arrest

An Australian television journalist has been arrested in Singapore for alleged drug possession and faces up to 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane, police and his employer said Friday.

The Central Narcotics Bureau said the man was arrested Wednesday but did not identify him. Australia's national television network, Australian Broadcasting Corp., said it was their New Delhi-based South Asia correspondent, Peter Lloyd.

Officers seized a packet of methamphetamine weighing approximately 0.03 ounces, an improvised smoking pipe and six syringes, the narcotics bureau said in a statement. Lloyd, 41, was expected to be charged in court Friday.

Singapore imposes severe penalties for drug use and possession, including a mandatory death penalty for anyone caught with more than 0.5 ounces of heroin or more than 17.6 ounces of marijuana. The death penalty does not apply to synthetic drug possession.

A statement from the director of ABC News, John Cameron, said Lloyd was on leave in Singapore. The reporter has been the face of ABC's coverage from India and Pakistan, appearing regularly on the network's nationally broadcast daily news.

The narcotics bureau said Lloyd was arrested during a follow-up search after a Singaporean man was arrested earlier in the day for alleged possession of methamphetamine. An investigation revealed that Lloyd had supplied the Singaporean with the drug, it said.

Lloyd faces five to 20 years in prison and five to 15 strokes of the cane if found guilty.

    • Malaysia's Anwar released on bail

Malaysian police have released opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on bail after he was arrested in connection with allegations of sodomy.

He was held for questioning over the allegations just hours before he had been due to make a police statement.

The former deputy prime minister, who could still face charges, has accused the government of orchestrating the allegations to discredit him.

"They have no case against me," Mr Anwar told reporters after his release.

The 60-year-old has been in a tense stand-off with police since a former male aide accused him of sodomy two weeks ago.

Sodomy, even between consenting adults, is a crime in Malaysia and is punishable by 20 years' imprisonment in the Muslim-majority country.

His arrest is likely to exacerbate the political tensions that have emerged since the opposition's unprecedented gains in the general election of March 2008.

      Intense pressure

Speaking to reporters outside police headquarters, the former lawyer said he had left the building.

"He was driven off in his wife's car through the back exit," said Sivarasa Rasiah.

Mr Anwar's arrest will have been seen as provocative by Malaysian opposition groups, says the BBC's Robin Brant in Kuala Lumpur.

When he was arrested on similar charges 10 years ago, his supporters staged large demonstrations.

They had promised to do the same this time but, so far, no big protests have taken place, our correspondent says.

Only a handful of supporters gathered outside the police headquarters, despite calls by the opposition for a show of support.

Mr Anwar has given a statement to police but refused to provide a DNA sample, AFP news agency quoted his lawyers as saying.

Under the bail conditions, he is required to report back to police on 18 August.

Mr Anwar has said the allegations are part of a conspiracy to try to derail his efforts to bring down the government after his significant gains in the general election.

The sodomy accusations came only weeks after Mr Anwar said he was in a position to launch a challenge to the ruling coalition, with the help of government defectors.

The opposition leader made his claim at a time when Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is already under intense pressure to resign over poor election results and high fuel prices.

Mr Abdullah has said he will leave office in 2010, defying pressure to step down this December.

    • Government arrests more as tension mounts in Turkey

Political tensions rose Tuesday across Turkey as police seized two retired generals, a prominent journalist and others accused of plotting to overthrow the government and prosecutors undertook a court case to ban the ruling party.

The developments dramatize the sharp and serious political tensions between the country's ruling party and its outspoken critics from the nation's secularist establishment.

Since autumn, police have been arresting and jailing people accused of being part of Ergenekon, an alleged plot to overthrow the government. During the effort, there has been harassment of journalists, and news reports have said many people are being held without charge.

On Tuesday, police made 22 arrests in Ankara, Istanbul, Antalya and Trabzon, according to Turkey's semi-official Anadolu Agency, which said its information came from prosecutors. Three other people were being sought, the agency said.

    • Saudi arrests 700 Islamists plotting 'oil attacks'

OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia has arrested 701 Islamists in the past six months on suspicion of plotting attacks on oil industry installations, the interior ministry announced on Wednesday.

Security forces "carried out several operations against followers of the deviant ideology and arrested a total of 701 people of various nationalities," said a ministry spokesman quoted by the official SPA news agency.

Of those arrested since the start of the year, "520 are still being held for their implication in the organisational and ideological plans of the deviant ideology."

Deviant ideology is the term used by Saudi officials to describe Al-Qaeda.

The ministry did not give the nationalities of those arrested but stressed that the masterminds lived abroad and were recruiting foreigners -- among them Muslim pilgrims from around the Islamic world -- to carry out attacks.

"Chiefs of the sedition abroad have engaged in recruiting nationals in Asian and African countries to carry out operations in Saudi Arabia, taking advantage of the facilities granted to the Muslim faithful to come to Mecca for the annual pilgrimage or to do the omra," or minor pilgrimage, the official said.

"The cells that have been broken up which were run from abroad were primarily targeting economic targets in the country," which is the world's second-largest oil producer and its largest exporter.

In one instance, the official said a cell had been broken up in the oil-rich Eastern Province that was controlled by African immigrants who had been seeking to recruit followers at oil installations.

A message purportedly sent to the cell's chief by Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri called for militants to collect money and promised to send jihadists (holy warriors) from "Iraq, Afghanistan and North Africa to attack oil installations and the security forces.

Without giving details, the official said the cell had begun planning an attack on "an oil site and a security target with car bombs."

The kingdom has been battling suspected Al-Qaeda militants since they launched a wave of shootings and bombings, many targeting Westerners, in May 2003.

Last July, the interior ministry announced that it had started forming special security units to protect the country's oil infrastructure from terrorist attacks.

In April 2007, the ministry said 172 terror suspects had been rounded up along with weapons and cash. Some of the militants were allegedly plotting airborne attacks on oil facilities and army bases.

Security forces thwarted an alleged Al-Qaeda attack against Saudi Arabia's massive Abqaiq oil processing facility in February 2006. Two members of the security forces and two assailants were killed.

A man freed from the Chatham County jail faces new charges after he walked out of the jail naked.

Savannah-Chatham County police said they arrested Bill Merit less than a mile from the jail after getting calls that a nude man was walking by a busy roadside during the daytime.

A police report says Merritt told an officer that he didn't take the clothes jailers gave him because he thought they were stolen.

The report said the man "appeared rational, except for being naked."

Jail records show Merrit had been booked two days earlier on charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

    • Toddler found wandering the street holding beer bottle

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL -- A 24-year old Jacksonville Beach woman is facing felony child neglect charges Thursday after police say neighbors found her two year old son wandering in the street wearing a soiled diaper carrying a beer bottle.

Jessica Nicole Hughes was arrested when she returned home after being contacted by police.

She was described as extremely intoxicated at the time of her arrest.

Authorities called Jax Beach Fire & Rescue to check on the little boy, who was bleeding from a piece of broken glass in his foot, and to be sure he hadn't consumed alcohol.

"Fortunately, it did not appear the child had ingested any alcohol," said Jax Beach Sergeant Thomas Bingham.

Police got a call from neighbors around 9 o'clock wednesday night. "Two neighbors call us saying, 'hey! There's this 2-year old child walking around... (with a ) soiled diaper, glass is in the bottom of his foot -walking around with a beer bottle," said Jacksonville Beach Police Public Information Officer Thomas Bingham.

According to police, the boy's mother, Jessica Hughes, said she dropped the child off at their apartment where her fiancee' was napping. She then went out.

The toddler's soon-to-be step-Dad told First Coast News little Caleb did what most two year olds do. He explored. "He has toys. He loves to climb. And you know Kids love to climb!" said Michael Edenfield.

"He climbed up, unlocked the door and the next thing you know he was out here!"

Mike Edenfield was awakened to neighbors and blue flashing lights to learn the toddler was out.

Police reached Mom on the phone and told her to come home.

"And when she came home, she was absolutely obliterated!" said Sgt. Bingham.

"(She was) Extremely intoxicated. Had difficulty standing. The investigation continued and the officers ended up arresting her for child abuse and child neglect."

Paramedics pulled a sliver of glass from the boys foot and determined that he had not consumed any alcohol.

The Department of Children And Families was called and an investigator went to the apartment on the 200 block of 10th Avenue North. The DCF determined the child was safe in the care of Edenfield while the boy's mother was taken to jail.

Caleb's soon-to-be stepfather is grateful the boy is unharmed, but says the arrest of his mother creates an instant hardship.

"It means now I can't work until I find a babysitter! And I don't have a babysitter so now that puts me behind on my rent. All my bills are going to get behind because of this little incident."

If convicted on the third degree felony charges, Hughes could be jailed for up to five years. Hughes is being held at the Duval County Jail on $5,000 bond.

    • Second arrest in failed UK bombing

A second man was arrested Friday after a failed bomb attempt at a British restaurant, police confirmed.

The alleged bomber was arrested Thursday but police believe he has a history of mental illness and fear others preyed on his vulnerability. A third man is helping with police inquiries.

Nicky Reilly, 22, traveled by bus from his home in Plymouth, Devon, to the Giraffe restaurant -- a chain popular with families -- in Exeter, where he attempted to detonate explosives, police say.

They believe Reilly is a recent Islamic convert who had been "radicalized."

British authorities rarely name suspects before they are charged, but police said Reilly had been manipulated and appealed for help tracking his movements.

Tony Melville, the deputy chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police told reporters at a news conference at the scene Thursday: "Our investigations so far indicate Reilly, who has a history of mental illness, had adopted the Islamic faith," the UK's Press Association reported.

"We believe, despite his weak and vulnerable state, he was preyed upon, radicalized and taken advantage of," he said.

The incident happened in just before 1200 GMT Thursday. The packed city center was partly evacuated.

Reilly was described by friends as an "introverted loner" who adopted the Muslim faith and changed his name to Mohammed Rasheed last year, PA reported.

Reilly was arrested at the scene of the explosion, and suffered cuts to his eye and facial injuries after a device he was carrying exploded.

Another device found in the vicinity of the restaurant did not explode, police say.

Devon and Cornwall police say they are awaiting medical clearance to begin interviewing Reilly, who is under police guard in hospital.

Officers searched the home in Plymouth -- less than an hour's drive from Exeter -- which he shares with his mother for further clues on Friday.

No one else was injured in the blast, although 15 people were working in the restaurant at the time.

Witnesses said Reilly was seen entering the restaurant's toilets shortly before the blast but the explosion caused little damage.

In February, two mentally disabled women were sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up by remote control, an Iraqi government official said.
