    • Mega-Microcelebrity

Microcelebrity is the phenomenon of being extremely well known not to millions but to a small group -- a thousand people, or maybe only a few dozen. This phenomenon is seen most prevalently in the online world of social networks, blogs, and vlogs. Aaron Krane was the marketing manager for Technorati and the former host of the web TV show Buzz! He's often recognized at tech events, knows how to pose for pictures, and obsessively counts how many photos have been tagged of him on Facebook - all factors that contribute to his microcelebrity status. We'll follow Aaron as he shows us how, in this era of global and internet communities, who's a celebrity and why, may not really matter - as long as you get your 15 minutes somehow.

Questi i dati percentuali assoluti.

    • Zombies creator OK with being "the jackass" on Facebook

Blake Commagere created the all the widgets you hate most on Facebook — the Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires and Slayers...

You'd think Blake would hide from publicity given his monstrous creations, but no... saying how "totally wrong" people are who (like us) say that Facebook apps should be useful instead of annoying:

"For people to say that only utility apps are going to rule on Facebook –- anyone under that impression is totally wrong. Because utility is boring. Looking for a job? Who gets excited about that? And who does it every weekend?..."

Blake would have a point if Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires and Slayers were anywhere near as fun as Hollywood or traditional videogames. But they aren't. They're more like spitting on the wall at the same times as your friend and seeing who's loogey reaches the ground first...

Our suspicion? That Commagere knows this and has intentionally created the most annoying things on the Internet since HampsterDance.com as some sort of Faustian deal with the devil. He even hinted at this in his interview:

"If I’m going to get remembered as 'you're the jackass that did that the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,' I’ll still take that over falling into obscurity."

      Idea semplice, utile e divertente.

    • Welcome to the fame revolution

The elite ranks of the famous, usually reserved for broadcast or traditional media celebrities, are now being infiltrated by the likes of web celebs like Schultz.

"We made him, made them, famous," Weinberger said while showing photographs of the Star Wars Kid, Obama Girl, the home page of Turkish net fad Mahir and clips of YouTube's ubiquitous laughing babies. Weinberger went on to describe the current state of the fame game, saying that the traditional model of Hollywood megacelebrity is "based on alienation" -- a model, Weinberger says, that opens the door for us to reinterpret our notions of fame.

"[Hollywood celebrities] cease to be famous when we see them as they are," a concept he demonstrated by showing several gossip magazine pictures of celebrities without their makeup. "Blogging, however, is all about taking off the 'makeup.' They're exposing themselves as fallible human beings."

The same holds true for the rest of the web celebs. "What's famous on the web looks like it was done by a human hand," said Weinberger, while showing a Homestar Runner graphic. "They still feel like ours."

"It's not just the homespun quality of what's famous on the web. It's how fame works -- it's becoming much more DIY," said Weinberger. "Fame is now living in a long tail, or a long continuum of ways to be famous."

    • Fame At An Early Age Will Send You Knuts (Just Ask Britney)

      by Nicole
Regardless of whether you're a man, woman or beast, it seems fame at an early age is not good for your mental health. The Daily Mail is reporting that Berlin Zoo's most famous resident, Knut, the once über cuddly polar bear cub, has grown up to become a "publicity-addicted psycho."

Knut and his twin brother were born in December 2006. Their mother, 20-year old Tosca, caught a serious case of post-partum depression, and rejected the cubs, who were subsequently rescued by zoo workers. Sadly Knut's brother died after just 4 days, but Knut survived, spending 44 days in an incubator before being hand reared by zookeeper Thomas Dörflein.

In March 2007 the German tabloid Bild-Zeitung carried a quote from Frank Albrecht, a radical animal rights activist, who claimed it would be better for Knut to die than be raised by humans "as a domestic pet." A massive public outcry ensued, and Knut shot to fame worldwide. 400 journalists showed up for his public debut, and the bear became the zoo's superstar poster child. Visitors increased by 30% after Knut graced the covers of newspapers and glossy magazines, such as the German edition of Vanity Fair, and merchandising, book and film deals followed. But fame took its toll on the impressionable cub.

"He is addicted to the whole show, the human adulation. It is not healthy," said Markus Roebke, who is a key member of Knut's human entourage. Roebke would like to see Knut enter rehab far away from the glare of the public spotlight. "Knut must go, and the sooner the better."

"We are not allowed to have contact with him any more and have received letters that if we breach this order our jobs are on the line. He is too unpredictable to play with now,' Roebke continued. "He actually cries out or whimpers if he sees that there is not a spectator outside his enclosure ready to ooh and aah at him...When the zoo had to shut because of black ice everywhere he howled until staff members stood before him and calmed him down."

It is estimated that Knut has earned his zoo over $12 million since his birth. That may seem like a lot, but Knut has a lot of catching up to do if he is to rival the earning power of fellow child star Britney Spears, whose economy is estimated by Porfolio.com to be worth $110 million to $120 million annually. Like Britney, Knut's dad is trying to get in on the action, with Neumünster Zoo (the conservators of Knut's father) threatening to file a lawsuit demanding a share of the spoils. Sadly, Knut and Britney have far too much in common. Perhaps they should hit group therapy together before they both turn into Gary Coleman (it'd break our heart to see Knut doing infomercials).
