    • Greek Robin Hoods, Steal From the Rich & Give To Poor

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek anarchists stormed a supermarket on Thursday and handed out food for free in the latest of a wave of raids provoked by soaring consumer prices.

About 20 unarmed people, mostly wearing black hoods, carried out the midday robbery in the northern city of Thesaaloniki, police said.

Local media have labeled the raiders "Robin Hoods" following previous raids.

They take only packets of pasta, rice and cartons of milk which they drop in the middle of the street for people to collect, a police official said.

"They have never stolen money or hurt anyone. They ask people to remain calm but use ambush tactics, jumping over cash desks," he said.

"When they attack without hoods, people are surprised to see that they are mostly women."

The rising cost of living has replaced unemployment as Greeks' main concern. Inflation is officially running at a 10-year high of 4.9 percent although many items have risen in price more sharply.

    • Half of all food produced worldwide is wasted

Tremendous quantities of food are wasted after production - discarded in processing, transport, supermarkets and kitchens - and this wasted food is also wasted water, finds a policy brief released Thursday at World Water Week in Stockholm.

The brief authored by the Stockholm International Water Institute, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Water Management Institute shows that the current food crisis is less a crisis of production than a crisis of waste. Tossing food away is like leaving the tap running, the authors say.

"More than enough food is produced to feed a healthy global population. Distribution and access to food is a problem - many are hungry, while at the same time many overeat," the brief states. But, it says, "we are providing food to take care of not only our necessary consumption but also our wasteful habits."

    • Shoppers 'cheated' as supermarket brands offer less for same price

      Yep. I've noticed this myself.

Shoppers are paying more for their goods without realising - as manufacturers shrink the pack sizes.

In the face of rising costs, firms try to protect their profits. But many brands are reluctant to put up prices for fear of a consumer backlash - particularly when household budgets are squeezed.

One solution is to charge customers the same - but make packs smaller.

    • Paying by fingerprint at the supermarket

Customers of a German supermarket chain will soon be able to pay for their shopping by placing their finger on a scanner at the check-out.

An Edeka store in the southwest German town of Ruelzheim has piloted the technology since November, cutting out on time otherwise wasted scrabbling for coins or cards.

      Paying with your fingerprint
The company plans to equip its stores across the region with the new technology.

Store manager Roland Fitterer said: "All customers need do is register once with their identity card and bank details, then they can shop straight away".

The technology is based on comparing the shopper's fingerprint with those stored in its database along with account details. Edeka bosses said they were confident the system could not be abused. The chance of two people having the same fingerprint is about one in 220 million.

    • Rationing of rice hits UK supermarkets

Supermarkets are rationing rice in some stores after panic-buying by customers worried about a global shortage.

Retailers including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Lidl have introduced quotas for the staple food, which has increased in price worldwide by 70 per cent in a year.

It is believed to be the first time major stores have limited purchases of such foodstuffs since sugar and bread were restricted in the Seventies because of strikes by producers.

Netto, the Danish-owned chain with 184 UK stores, has limited its 10kg bags of rice to one per customer.

Lidl, the German-owned cut-price group with 380 British outlets, has restricted purchases to ‘family volumes’ to stop bulk-buying by traders.

Most of the limits have been introduced in areas of Leicester which have large Asian populations.

Tesco said that for two weeks its store in the Hamilton area of the city had limited customers to two packs of rice per person.

But a spokeswoman insisted: ‘There is no supply problem. Rice was restricted for a couple of weeks at one store only. No other Tesco stores have been affected.’

Customers at the Morrisons store at Freemans Park, Leicester, were being restricted to six packs of rice, regardless of size, per customer.

The Asda store at nearby Thurmaston imposed similar restrictions, but at a national level the company denied it had any rationing in place

    • Unpack

Unpacking it and it's all in plastic!

We buy something, it goes into plastic, we haven't really questioned it until lately. It is questioned now because it has been highlighted.

Because of the nature of plastic bags, by this I mean that they float on air and in water, it is difficult to keep control of them when they are discarded. Many of the bags we see hanging like strange fruit from trees and blowing along our roadsides is usually non-intentional rubbish. Most of the bags found polluting the oceans is non-intentional.

It will take a major change in attitude to really make a difference to the devastating and crippling effect plastic bags have on wildlife, the environment and the aesthetics of our countryside, towns and cities.

The major change needs to come from education and the big supermarkets. The staff need to be trained and educated to discourage the use of bags, to think what they are contributing to and the supermarket bosses need to make a decision to stop using them altogether.

Produced, directed and edited by Lynne D Jones.

      Supermarket powers to be curbed

The big four supermarkets dominate the grocery market
Suppliers will get better protection in their dealings with big supermarkets to ensure fair competition. It's alright what you think and all, but I think this is stupid, smaller buisnesses will bacome bigger IF this is to work, not to forget how pricey those things are...my guess, big families won't be very copertive.

    • Tesco, Lloyds TSB, and Nokia Call for Fresh Legislation on Climate Change

A cluster of multi-national corporations, including Nike and Tesco, have written to the Financial Times today, pleading for new international 'binding' agreements on global warming guidance. The statement, which was financially backed by bungling eco-do-gooder Prince Charles, called for legal deals to canvas consensus on corporate behaviour in American, European, Chinese, and Australian companies. Could this be the answer to the current 'checkmate' situation in the global warming crisis? Experts have recently stated that the major players in international economics would need to devote as much energy to reducing their carbon footprint as America did when attempting to put man on the moon, back in the late '60s. But it's clear to all that reluctance on the part of big business won't end until there's hard and fast rules. After all, profit-making is a legal duty to company shareholders. Do we need legal directives, or can the green pound steer companies in the right direction? What do you think? • Probably the best job in the world...

Men, prepare to be extremely jealous!

Helen Moores is Tesco's chief lager taster - working from Tesco HQ in Hertfordshire she has visited more than 30 countries in the search for new and exciting lagers.

Unsurprisingly, she loves her job and says the only downside is having to start tasting lagers at 9.30 in the morning and ensuring she hasn't had too many the night before! What a woman!

Unlike wine tasting, sampling lager requires a good ol' swig of the amber nectar to fully appreciate the taste, something that Helen says she has to watch as she can sample up to 20 lagers a day!

What's your ideal job? Test driving sports cars? Food taster? We want to know!
