      Atlantic salmon returning to East Coast rivers
      July 23, 2008
      CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland—The Atlantic Salmon Federation says rivers in eastern Canada have had some of the best wild Atlantic salmon returns in years.
      With good water conditions and strong salmon runs throughout much of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Maine, the group is reporting anglers and conservationists rejoicing from Labrador to Maine and all points in between.
      Don Ivany, the regional director for Newfoundland and Labrador, says the returns of salmon are "a pleasant surprise," after the poor runs of 2007.
      He says counting facilities indicate much better runs than previous averages dating back to 1984.
      One of the more dramatic examples is the Exploits River in central Newfoundland at Bishops Falls.
      To July 20, the river had a total return of 26,986 grilse and large salmon compared to an average of 15,770 in the period 1992 to 2007 and an average of 5,309 in the period 1984 to 1991.
      The smaller salmon, grilse, that have spent only one year in the ocean are making the big difference. It is especially true in Newfoundland rivers where grilse make up most of the runs.
      Since counting facilities are on only a portion of the hundreds of salmon rivers throughout eastern Canada and the New England states, the federation is cautious about declaring this a successful year.

      I have had the profound experience of watching our Presumpscot River at the end of our street trnsform from a dead and poisonous sewer to a vibrant and healthy rapids with American Eagles and Osprey during the past years. They removed the damns because of economic reasons finally. I think we should apologize to the Natives who lived here and if i remember correctly walked to talk to our leaders in Boston to complain and got no respect.

      But this is good news for the good guys!

    • Book: Blessed Unrest: How the largest movement in the world came into being and no...

      Many books describe the world in ways that break our hearts. Blessed Unrest invokes a heartbreak from which light pours. Paul Hawken is stupendously well informed. He is also critical without rancor, intuitive without woo woo, and poetic or hard-minded as the case requires. His narrative flows from a harrowing litany of "free market" abuses and desecrations to the countless life-saving actions and organizations that now envelope the earth in response. This is a work of enormous love and consequence. Every compassion-driven soul who reads it will be stunned by the scope and power of the movement we've inadvertently formed. When, inevitably, my daughters someday feels their hearts broken by the wounded world they have inherited, I will be handing them this and a precious few other books.

      Just got this book on cd and it looks relevant to our situation..
      Perfect to lift me out of my frustration and sadness of our current political stagnation. and listen to while I am packing our family's belongings to start our new life in our new home nearby.

    • Our Challenge. Al Gore needs our help.

      Wes and Joan have told me that MoveOn members are really jumping on board with our new national challenge—getting 100% of our nation's electricity from renewable and truly clean energy sources within 10 years. Apparently, more than 150,000 have already signed this MoveOn petition in the last 24 hours.

      Thank you! I knew when I issued this challenge that it would take millions of us working together, a whole new movement of citizens, to make it happen. And, once again, MoveOn members are rising to the challenge. It's very heartening.

      I'd like to ask you to join me by adding your name, too. Just click here:

      As I said on Thursday, this is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path and our collective fate. I'm asking you—each of you—to join me and build this future.

      Thanks for all you do,

    • Easy trick for treating cold sores (herpes): L-Lysine supplements : )

      What therapies does Dr. Weil recommend for cold sores (slightly edited by cg
      original version follow link.)
      To prevent do the following:

      Avoid foods rich in the amino acid arginine, which can activate the virus. These foods include chocolate, cola, beer, grain cereals, chicken soup, gelatin, seeds, nuts and peas.

      Taking L-lysine (from the health food stores) can reduce the frequency of attacks of oral herpes in some people. Take 500-1,000 milligrams a day on an empty stomach at the first sign of a tingle in your lip.

      At the first sign of a tingle in my lip I take a tablet of L Lysine.
      I have used this for 25 years with 100% effectiveness.
      Don't listen to the doctors who recommend drugs and appointments. Don't let drug companies and advertising fool you! They want your money and don't care about you.
      I use L Lysine a few times a year with 100% effectiveness...combined with making sure that I stopped eating too much chocolate and nuts.. while the outbreak is occurring.

    • Fortune 500 CEOs relative to the average wage in the United States

      n recent years, there has been a lot of criticism concerning the salaries of Fortune 500 CEOs. The graph below from The Economist shows how much CEO compensation has grown relative to the average wage in the United States.

      As you can see, the compensation for executives in major US corporations was around 30-40 times the wages of the average worker up until the late 1980s. Now, executives make over 100 times the average wage. You could also look at the largest compensation packages for US CEOs on this Forbes site, noting that the highest paid CEOs make a couple hundred million dollars for the year (this of course includes bonuses and stock compensation).

      Some are particularly aghast at what CEOs make when their performance is poor. For example -

      The Corporate Library, an American corporate-governance consultancy, last year identified 11 large and well known but poorly governed companies, including AT&T, Merck and Time Warner, where the chief executive had been paid at least $15m a year for two successive years even as the company's shares had underperformed. Robert Nardelli received a $210m pay-off when he lost his job earlier this month even though the shares of his company, Home Depot, fell slightly during his six years in charge. Carly Fiorina, ejected from Hewlett-Packard almost $180m better off—including a severance payment of $21.6m—after a lacklustre tenure as chief executive.

      What do you think about the increase in executive pay? Is it an outrage or is it fair? Should there be restrictions on how much a CEO can be paid? You may want to remember our discussion of labor markets and how marginal revenue product was the basis for how much someone should be paid.

      There are 125 ratings for the drug: CLARITIN-D in the Askapatient database.
      The average rating for CLARITIN-D is 2.5.

      PATIENT RATING #1:
      Makes me feel crazy! Angry, moody, even homocidal & defiant. Did I mention very angry. Anxious, sensitive to others. Emotional. I hate it!! Actually works on my allergies. Kills my people skills. Decided the side effects are not worth my sanity.

      PATIENT RATING #2
      15 yr. old son took it for allergies. Has asthma also. Took it last evening, about 24 hrs ago. Check him at 11:pm and he was very sweaty, hard to get him off the sofa to bed. Slept in very late this am, woke up very moody. Turn into a confrontation later in afternoon. Ended up with swearing and hitting me with an object. Then I looked up what others said, and think these symptoms were drug related as they were the most severe I've ever seen him. Wouldn't recommend this for anyone.

      PATIENT RATING #3
      I warn anyone from taking this drug. it gave me major panic attacks and i've never had any before. it makes you nervous and feel like you out of it. dizzyness, anxiety, and depression. this drug made me feel like i wanted to die and stay in bed away from people. It should be taken off the shelf!

      PATIENT RATING #4
      My mouth is SUPER dry despite drinking TONS of water. My stomach feals likes it's going to explode, literally. I thought I was going to kill (not literally) my boyfriend today and after reading everyone else's comments about how it made them anxious and irritated I am relieved to know that I'm not the only one going crazy! These side effects would probably go away if I took it regulary but it's not worth finding out. I'll find something else!

      The original lyrics and video

      NEIL YOUNG LYRICS
      "Let's Impeach The President"
      Let's impeach the President for lying
      And misleading our country into war
      Abusing all the power that we gave him
      And shipping all our money out the door
      Who's the man who hired all the criminals
      The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
      They bend the facts to fit with their new stories
      Of why we have to send our men to war
      Let's impeach the President for spying
      On citizens inside their own homes
      Breaking every law in the country
      By tapping our computers and telephones
      What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
      Would New Orleans have been safer that way
      Sheltered by our government's protection
      Or was someone just not home that day?
      Flip - Flop
      Flip - Flop
      Flip - Flop
      Flip - Flop
      Let's impeach the president for hijacking
      Our religion and using it to get elected
      Dividing our country into colors
      And still leaving black people neglected
      Thank god he's cracking down on steroids
      Since he sold his old baseball team
      There's lots of people looking at big trouble
      But of course our president is clean.

    • Billionaires are gouging your grandparents

      Just how is buyout billionaire Bruce Wasserstein gouging our country's elderly? Let's connect the dots: Wasserstein is the CEO of Lazard and has made billions by buying companies, cutting costs, and turning quick profits. Lazard owns and manages Atria Senior Living—the third largest assisted-living provider in the U.S.—as a private equity investment. Atria has been mismanaging its facilities left and right, making medication mistakes, wrongly locking in residents, and even failing to call emergency services.

      Watch the video & sign the petition: http://warongreed.org/lazard.php

      What is Atria's response? The company slapped residents on a fixed income with steep rent increases to as much as $8,500 per month. What's more, Atria pays its staff a measly average of $8-10 an hour with unaffordable healthcare, while Wasserstein made $41 million in 2007 alone. That's right, Wasserstein is getting rich off our nation's grandmas and grandpas, a gross injustice that we have exposed in our newest video, Bruce Wasserstein: Gouging Grandma.

    • G-8 leaders only pledge to halve emissions by 2050

      Pledging to “move toward a low-carbon society,” leaders of the world’s richest nations endorsed Tuesday the idea of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050, but did not specify whether the starting point would be current levels or 1990 levels, and refused to set a short-term target for reducing the gases that scientists agree are warming the planet.

      The declaration by the so-called Group of Eight — the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Russia — came under intense criticism from environmentalists, who called it a missed opportunity and said it ignores the urgent need to cut emissions more rapidly.

      However, European leaders, who have long pressed President Bush to adopt a more aggressive stance on climate change, said they were pleased with the agreement, which is nonbinding. They cast it as an important step toward laying the groundwork for a binding international treaty, to be negotiated in Copenhagen in 2009 under the auspices of the United Nations.

      “This is a strong signal to citizens around the world,” the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, told reporters at a news conference near here. “The science is clear, the economic case for action is stronger than ever. Now we need to go the extra mile to secure an ambitious global deal in Copenhagen.”

      ~~~~~~~~
      To me this sends a strong signal that for the fate of this Earth and our species to be in the hands of these eight countries means that nothing effective will be done to solve this urgent crisis. Again, this is what happens when you make this crisis a political issue. Halving by 2050 is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. The Arctic ice will be melted by then (which of course they probably want to be able to plunder the resources there as well,) coal plants will have spewed millions of tons of toxic gases into the air by then, and many islands in other parts of our world already threatened by sea level rise will be feeling the affects of our behavior. As it stands now we are approaching the third degree of a six degree doomsday scenario. Are these leaders so greedy and blind to scientific reports that they actually think this is good enough? And the fact that it is non binding is simply and honestly, BS.
      As an environmentalist but more importantly as a citizen of the world I am outraged that these men of rich countries think they can tell the poor of this world who will feel the brunt of this most what they are going to do. I say it is time for people to tell them that they are going to do what must be done. I now have little hope for Copenhagen next year. All I see are political leaders using this crisis as an economic ping pong ball and bargaining chip as droughts become more pervasive and prolonged, glaciers continue to melt, storms become more intense, and the resources that we depend on from our land and oceans become scarcer and more polluted. As it is already the oceans are more acidic than we thought, and should this be the first summer the Arctic is ice free it is only a portent of more to come. We don't have until 2050 for politicians to get around to this!
      What will it take to get the message through to these people? A global revolution? Remember this also, all of this opens the doors for government and multi nationals to continue their chokehold on the poor and oppressed. This climate crisis is just what they are looking for to institute a one world government and make the most profit they can from this. So of course, they will take their time. That is why they alone cannot be allowed to dictate to us what our future will be, especially when our survival is on the line. Good enough? No. It is an outrage.
