RSPCA says pets are falling prey to a throwaway society
The number of pets being abandoned by owners in the UK has grown by almost 25 per cent in a year, raising concern that animals are the latest victims of a “throwaway society”.
The RSPCA is concerned that people are ready to give up their pets for the most bizarre reasons. One owner told an inspector: “My cat doesn’t match my new carpet.” Another said: “I’ve just bought a new leather sofa and I don’t want the cat to scratch it.”
Figures from the RSPCA, the country’s biggest animal welfare charity, also show that half of the 7,347 animals rescued from the streets last year were cats.
Dogs and rabbits are also being discarded by their owners. Animal officers employed by local authorities have reported that animals are routinely abandoned when owners go on holiday. Pets are turned out on the streets for two weeks and then owners often wish to reclaim them on their return. Hareless: Yellowstone's Rabbits Have Vanished
Bees, birds, rabbits... A pattern?/////////excerpt////////A new study by the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society found that jack rabbits living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem have apparently hopped into oblivion. The study, which appears in the latest issue of the journal Oryx, also speculates that the disappearance of jack rabbits may be having region-wide impacts on a variety of other prey species and their predators.
According to the study, historical records from more than 130 years ago indicate that white-tailed jack rabbits were once locally abundant in Greater Yellowstone, a 60,000 square kilometer (23,166 square mile) ecosystem that contains both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. However, the WCS study found that no jack rabbit sightings could be confirmed in Yellowstone since 1991 and only three in Grand Teton since 1978.
No one knows what caused the rabbits to disappear, according to the study's lead author, Dr. Joel Berger, a Wildlife Conservation Society conservationist, and professor at the University of Montana. "It could be disease, extreme weather, predation or other factors," Dr. Berger said. "Since the rabbits blipped off without knowledge, there has simply been no way to get at the underlying cause."/////////end of excerpt.

Cat-bits vs. Rabbit-tens
Not the two animals you would imagine sharing a bed, but according to the orphaned kittens' rescuer, they haven't been happier!
Originally rescued by veterinary nurse Melanie Humble, she hoped her own 'feline friend' would act as a surrogate mum for the six kittens, but was surprised when her cat wasn't interested at all and paw-ned them off onto Melanie's pet rabbit, Summer. They have been inseparable since and refuse to go anywhere without their new mum.
It's quite cute, but does anyone else see the potential risks that may lie ahead? What if the kittens grow up and realise they have been 'sleeping with the enemy' All the other cats in the neighbourhood could turn against Summer and cause a true CATastrophe!
Know of any other strange animal relationships? Not the two animals you would imagine sharing a bed, but according to the orphaned kittens' rescuer, they haven't been happier! ... more -
