Lawyers ready to defend protesters who land in jail at DNC
Keeping everyone posted on news concerning the DNC from local news sources-
The Rocky Mountain News-
Free speech rights are personal to Denver criminal defense lawyer Sean McAllister.
During a protest in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, McAllister, 35, was serving as a legal observer.
"The police came out of nowhere and I was karate-chopped in the neck. I have been personally assaulted by the DPD (Denver Police Department)," McAllister said.
He is concerned that First Amendment rights could take a back seat during the Democratic National Convention. That's why McAllister said he helped found the DNC-People's Law Project and will be volunteering his time to help protesters during the convention. The People's Law Project held a training session Friday to focus on protecting civil rights and quickly springing protesters from jail during the convention.
Mayor John Hickenlooper has said that all police on the streets during the convention will have attended training classes to help them defuse violence.
Civil rights lawyer David Lane spoke during the training session where about 60 lawyers learned how they can help defend protesters who tangle with police.
Lane said police reaction to protesters will determine whether rallies are peaceful or violent.
Lane said he witnessed some restraint by Denver police at a recent Columbus Day parade.
But, he said, the brass will set the tone in August. "If police are ill-trained and ill-led, '68 may very well be recreated in Denver," Lane said referring to riots during the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.
The People's Law Project will provide pro bono attorneys to help jailed protesters during the convention.
The group will also staff a hot line where protesters can call for help and will field teams of neutral legal observers who will attend rallies and videotape protesters' interaction with police. The 10 Worst Corporations of 2007
Neither Honest Nor Trustworthy: The 10 Worst Corporations of 2007
by Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman
The U.S. public holds Big Business in shockingly low regard.
A November 2007 Harris poll found that less than 15 percent of the population believes each of the following industries to be "generally honest and trustworthy:" tobacco companies (3 percent); oil companies (3 percent); managed care companies such as HMOs (5 percent); health insurance companies (7 percent); telephone companies (10 percent); life insurance companies (10 percent); online retailers (10 percent); pharmaceutical and drug companies (11 percent); car manufacturers (11 percent); airlines (11 percent); packaged food companies (12 percent); electric and gas utilities (15 percent). Only 32 percent of adults said they trusted the best-rated industry about which Harris surveyed, supermarkets.
With the 10 Worst Corporations of 2007, we aim to show - again - that Big Business is out of control and to connect comparable abuses to the failure of government overseers, regulators and enforcers.
Presented alphabetically, here are the 10 Worst Corporations of 2007:

Chinese lawyers arrested before meeting with congressmen
BEIJING, July 1 -- A group of Chinese human rights lawyers were detained and later put under house arrest by government security officials to prevent them from attending a dinner Sunday hosted by two visiting members of the U.S. Congress.
The incident is the latest in a series of moves Chinese officials have made to clamp down on dissent in the run-up to the Summer Olympic Games, which open August 8 in Beijing.
"The actions show an unhealthy brazenness in regards to human rights," Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in an interview Tuesday.
Smith and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) had invited several dissident lawyers to meet with them Sunday night, but then learned that police took two lawyers from their homes that afternoon, drove them to a Beijing suburb and barred them from returning to the city. Police blocked another invitee from leaving his apartment complex and either warned or barred at least six other lawyers from attending, according to Chinese Human Rights Defenders, an advocacy group.
"China has regressed," fumed Wolf in an interview Tuesday. "There has been absolutely, positively no progress" on human rights. At least three lawyers and one pastor, who was able to attend the dinner, are now under house arrest, Wolf said. ONE Million Lawyers in the U.S. !!!
"When there are too many policemen, there can be no liberty.
When there are too many soldiers, there can be no peace.
When there are too many lawyers there can be no justice."
Lin Yutang (1895-1976). Chinese-American writer, translator and editor
There is one lawyer for every 300 Americans ! One million lawyers looking for someone to sue ?
"Sue onto others before they sue unto you".
The US has 70% of the world lawyers but only 5% of the world population. They are over 200 law schools
U.S. industry spends hundred of billion dollars annualy on ligitation cost and efforts to avoid liability.
The health care industry, one of the trial lawyers favorite targets has costs that are spiraling out of sight leaving many Americans underinsured or ininsured.
The rule of law has been replaced by the rule of lawyers.
ACLU Lawyers are even suing God out of this Land of promise and codifying immorality.
All we will have left is law against law.

Lesbian politics: Skip impeachment and proceed directly to war-crimes prosecution...
I have approximately 1,000 lawyers in my family, so lawyers have always been heroes of mine--but never more so than at this given moment in history. I have watched a variety of attempts to impeach the so-called President and his cronies go down in flames, and I've always been struck by the thought, Why bother with impeachment? These guys are criminals who have repeatedly sh*t upon the Constitution! Let's prosecute them! Well, some lawyers have decided to germinate an answer to my civic prayers--as usual!

Citizen tickets cop
From fixx user xaq:
As the Portland Mercury reports, Eric Bryant [a young Oregonian lawyer] was sitting in a Japanese resturant when he saw a cop park under a no parking sign, then come inside, order lunch, and started watching the game on TV. When Bryant asked the officer about his choice in parking spots he acknowledge that he was parked in a no parking zone, but that there was nothing wrong with that as he was a cop. The officer then asked “If someone broke into your house, would you rather have the police be able to park in front of your house or have to park three blocks away and walk there?”
According to Bryant “If he had acknowledged and corrected his error, we could have avoided this whole thing but instead, he kept watching basketball and told me he wasn’t doing anything wrong.” This bothered Eric, so he took the next step and initiated violation proceedings against Officer Stensgaard, racking up $540 in fines for the officer for “illegal parking, illegal stopping, [dis]obeying parking restrictions on state highways, and illegal operation of an emergency vehicle or ambulance” if the officer in [sic] convicted on his court date May 23rd.
