Human Growth Hormone Dopers under Placebo Effect?
"Many athletes credit drugs with improving their performance, but some of them may want to thank their brain instead. Mounting evidence suggests that the boost from human growth hormone (HGH), an increasingly popular doping drug, might be caused by the placebo effect.
In a new double-blind trial funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in which neither researchers nor participants knew who was receiving HGH and who was taking a placebo, the researchers asked participants to guess whether or not they were on the real drug. Then they examined the results of the group who guessed that they were getting HGH when, in fact, they had received a placebo. That group improved at four fitness tests measuring strength, endurance, power and sprint capacity. The study participants who guessed correctly that they were taking a placebo showed much less improvement, according to preliminary results presented at the Society for Endocrinology meeting in June. The researchers are currently analyzing the results of the other participants for future publication.
“This finding really shows the power of the mind,” said Ken Ho, an endocrinologist at the Garvan Institute in Sydney, Australia, who led the study. “Many athletes are reaping the benefits of the placebo effect, without knowing whether what they’re taking is beneficial or not.” "Many athletes credit drugs with improving their performance, but some of them may want to thank their brain instead. Judge agrees to put Bonds case on hold
A federal judge agreed today to postpone the prosecution of Barry Bonds while government lawyers correct technical flaws in the indictment of the former Giants slugger.
At a hearing in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Judge Susan Illston granted a government request to put the case over until June 6. In the meantime, prosecutors said in legal papers they would seek a new indictment of Bonds, who was accused of lying under oath to the federal grand jury that investigated the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative steroids scandal in 2003. Ever since the release of the Mitchell Report, Roger Clemens has been on a mission to clear his name from the laundry list of players that the report claims used performance-enhancing drugs. Many players that were accused in the Mitchell Report have since confessed to their using steroids or human growth hormone. Among them is Andy Pettitte, a long time friend, teammate and training partner of Clemens. Although, Clemens has appeared on 60 Minutes, other interviews and on YouTube denying his alleged drug use many people aren't convinced. In a congressional hearing in Washington, Clemens hopes to sway the court of popular opinion to his side by taking the stand under oath and stating his case yet again. Clemens & McNamee Testify Before Congress
Roger Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee are testifying before Congress right now in regards to allegations of steroid usage, HGH usage, potential perjury, etc...
Here's an excerpt from the running blog by ESPN.com's Jayson Stark:
"12:06 p.m. ET
Rep. John Tierney had an experience many of us in the media have had while trying to interview Clemens: We ask one thing. He gives an answer that seems to be in response to some whole other question. And no matter how hard we try, he keeps answering the question he hears, not the question we asked.
Tierney noted three specific times Clemens told investigators he'd never talked to McNamee about HGH -- but then cited two occasions when he confronted McNamee about his injection of his wife with HGH.
Repeatedly, Tierney asked Clemens how he "reconciled" that inconsistency. Repeatedly, Clemens gave answers that indicated that "prior" to those conversations, he'd never had a "specific" discussion with McNamee about HGH.
You wanted to scream out, "Roger, that's not what he's asking." But eventually, Tierney just gave up and moved on.
Been there. Done that. " Roger Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee are testifying before Congress right now in regards to allegations of steroid usage... more -

Chuck Knoblauch, really, the only headlining name in the Mitchell Report.
It pains me to see Chuck Knoblauch's name sullied with the likes of Adam Riggs, Cody McCay, and Armando Rios... I mean Hundley, Ismael Valdez, and Pettite's names were swirling around for years.
But the tragic tale of how Chuck Knoblauch's ended up here is a true tragedy which started when he threw an errant throw into the stands beaning Keith Olbermann's mother in the head.
And who could blame David Justice?
Who wouldn't load up on HGH after being dumped by Halle Berry? It pains me to see Chuck Knoblauch's name sullied with the likes of Adam Riggs, Cody McCay, and Armando Rios... I mean Hundley, I... more -
Former Baltimore Orioles star David Segui sheds light on HGH/steroid hubbub in MLB
But he also admits now that he used it before then to speed up his recovery from a hand injury.
"The stuff is amazing for that purpose," Segui says. "That is how it started in baseball. When I first came in the league is when Tommy John [elbow] surgery started to become more prevalent. I remember guys coming back from [the surgery] and throwing harder. I remember hearing [of] guys using growth hormone to speed up the healing process and regenerate the tendon growth and all that stuff. That is how it became known for its healing properties. And then guys would have [other] surgeries, and that is what they would take. So I laugh every time I read an article that says it is a performance-enhancer. It doesn't enhance your performance. If you are horse crap, you are going to be horse crap when you come off the [disabled list]. You're just going to come off the DL quicker."
He doesn't advocate breaking the rules and he doesn't encourage the use of HGH unless it is under doctor's orders. But he is puzzled by what he perceives to be a media-driven hysteria regarding drugs in the sport. He believes human growth hormone mistakenly has been lumped in with steroids and other performance-enhancers.
"I've been on teams that you couldn't beg them to give you a cortisone shot; and been on teams before you blinked, the needle is already in your knee. So what if you are on a team that didn't readily give them out? Were you at a disadvantage? Did the other organization's players have an advantage because they were able to get a cortisone injection? Because there is no such thing as a level playing field. That is a myth."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd assume there's a thin line between injury related HGH use... and HGH abuse...
It's understandable to how players can be pushed into HGH abuse... but it wasn't until 2005 when HGH was banned...
HGH of course is not steriods
The business of MLB puts pressure to force players out there to perform...
Teams who heavily market a player can't wait for players to recover from injuries, fans won't take too kindly to players who spend 40 games on the DL... thus neither will owners who write those paychecks...
hence why guys who play the whole time and yet are mediocre tend to just be as highly rewarded as injury risk stars... You know why the Cubs are paying Jason Marquis like $8 million a year for three years despite posting an ERA of 6.02 for the full season with Cardinals before that contract?? Because he pitched mediocrely for the FULL SEASON...
For most players, being able to play is how they get their salaries... If a player gets injured, they won't get good contracts b/c they've spent too much time on the DL healing naturally... But he also admits now that he used it before then to speed up his recovery from a hand injury. ... more -
$7,000,000 Worth of Steroids
That's a lot of juice. By the way if your name is Rick Ankiel find the gobenator and get ERASED asap. Troy Glaus's aren't too safe right now either.
A New York pharmacy linked to a widening probe of human growth hormone in sports was raided on Tuesday by state investigators who seized enough raw powder to make nearly a million HGH doses, according to the officials involved.
The raid of Lowen's Pharmacy in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, was the second in five months. In May, investigators with the New York Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement found employees mixing $200,000 worth of steroids and growth hormone in a back room. On Tuesday, they found 90 grams of raw human growth hormone, worth an estimated $7.2 million. Also found were kilogram quantities of three popular steroids: testosterone, nandrolone and stanazolol.
