    • The Noisy Epidemic - City major urban pollution issues

      The Noisy Epidemic
      by Elizabeth Svaboda

The amount of noise in every day life is increasing in America, and medical studies-and police reports-are showing that it can take away our sleep, make us angry and violent, and stop children from learning. One man takes up the anti-noise cause.
      _____

Doctor Hagler's frustration set him thinking about the impact of excessive noise on the world around him.
"Now we know secondhand noise is as bad for us as secondhand smoke."

Excessive noise can adversely affect happiness and productivity even if listeners don't end up in mental hospitals. Arline Bronzaft, a professor emeritus of psychology at Lehman College, helps field 350,000 noise-related complaints per year as chair of the noise committee of New York City's Council on the Environment.

"Having to put up with boom cars and loud mufflers every day can make you a little crazy," Ron Czapala says. "There's an increasing number of people becoming violent as a result of excessive noise."

    • African American Hair: Glamour gets sued for upper management remarks

The incident that Rosenberg is talking about involves Ashley Baker, a white former associate editor at Glamour, who touched off a firestorm of controversy last summer when she told a roomful of female attorneys at law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton that afro-style hairdos and dreadlocks are Glamour "don'ts."

" 'No offense,' she sniffed, but those 'political hairstyles really have to go,' " reported American Lawyer magazine, which first broke the story.

Stripped of its appalling delivery, was Baker's observation wrong?

"Black hair is sensitive," said Anna Holmes, the managing editor of Jezebel, a celebrity, sex and fashion blog for women, which followed the Baker story closely. "What Baker said was inappropriate, but was she inaccurate? No. She hit a nerve ... society is uncomfortable with ethnic hair and it is uncomfortable about race. And it's tough talking about all of it because emotion gets in the way."

Over the years, lawsuits have been filed against companies for discriminating against black employees for their ethnic hairstyles. Corporate-image experts, both black and white, subtly advise black women to remove their braids, dreadlocks and other ethnic hairdo before interviewing at corporate jobs, experts confide

    • Job profiling in Milwaukee, WI

I was recently let go from my job of 4 years as a corporate recruiter for questioning their hiring practices. I simply asked what our tolerance was with people's conviction records. There was an applicant who'd been convicted of burglary in 1994 (13 years ago). This applicant hadn't been in any trouble since, had a stable work history and wasn't the most eligible candidate according to my boss. He fired me two days after our conversation for misconduct...
I have been looking for work since 06/25/2007, to no avail. I have a degree in accounting, speak Spanish fluently, am computer literate and have over 11 years of administrative experience...very employable, right?
Well today I found out that my own arrest/conviction record will stand in the way of me getting even a temporary assignment. My conviction was for disorderly conduct....no jail time - - just a fine I had to pay and I was made to apologize to the officer I cussed out!
PLEASE comment on this one folks...does this NOT qualify as profiling as it relates to a job? Am I being unreasonable to expect to be able to find work within my field when I am perfectly qualified? (NO FELONIES)

P.S. In the same case I was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. That charge was dismissed. The agency still asked me about it though.

    • LIGHT GRAFFITI -- Thank god for creativity on campus

I heard about this guys work because he's friends with someone who I'm working with in a film class. He uses a slow shutter speed to create incredible images with light in the night, and this film really showcases how someone even at a pre-professional, Whartonite place like U.Penn can be incredibly creative.

I especially like how he uses a combo of stop motion animation and photography, and he's really well spoken about the craft itself...

Hey Current: Check him out! This deserves to be on TV!

    • Shipwrecks of the Sahara

“ Welcome to Mauritania. Where is my present?” asked the border guard as he stamped our passports.

My brother and I had were standing inside a little shack, in the middle of a minefield that marked the border between Morocco and its southern neighbor. This wasn’t quite the welcome we were expecting. But in a way it was to foreshadow our experience of Mauritania; challenging, exciting, unpredictable….and lawless.

We were here to make a film about shipwrecks as I had heard stories of trawlers, container boats and navy vessels that had been left to rot in a large bay. As we discovered it turned out to be the largest ship graveyard in the world, with more than a hundred vessels.

Filming here was a challenge as authorities had confiscated cameras and film off several people that we had spoken to. Not wishing enjoy the same treatment we kept a low profile and managed to come away with some unique footage.

      Edit underway.

    • Camel is King - 21st Century Nomad

As the blood ran down my chin, and bits of cold liver flapped around my face, I wondered where in my contract with Current TV it was stated that "thou shalt butcher a camel". But still, when in Rome.... or in this case the mountains of Arabia.

When I set out to make a short film about Hadi, an Arab friend of mine who had grown up as a nomadic camel herder, I wanted to experience a way life that is rapidly disappearing. Which is how I found myself crouched under the meagre shade of a thorn bush in the mid-day sun, dismembering large chunks of camel. I was using the traditional bedouin method of holding the meat between my teeth while slicing it into thin strips with a knife. This was destined to be breakfast, lunch and dinner (in fact every meal for the next four days was a derivative of al jamel).

      Pod due soon.

    • Teach for America? Wendy Kopp speaks at Penn

I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a great way to give back, work on our resume, and avoid the reality of actually working in an office 5 days a week right after college.

I was lured by the idea of it too, but have recently come across a variety of media and personal stories that have proved a little less...well...attractive.

Today Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America, is coming to speak at Penn, for a lecture and Q&A session at 4:30 p.m. in Huntsman Hall Auditorium G06. I won't be able to make the series, but hopefully she'll address some of the more negative press about self-selecting to ivy leaguers and the like when she speaks.

I'll keep you posted, and if anyone else can post on her speech, i'd be really interested to hear about what she says.
