Thousands of racing-related horse deaths in recent years, Congress steps In
A Congressional hearing was called after Eight Belles broke both legs at the Kentucky Derby last month and was euthanized on the track. Subsequent surveys have discovered thousands of racing-related horse deaths in recent years.
Dutrow, whose star horse was a favorite to win the Triple Crown before a stunning last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. The last place finish came from the jockey's decision to slow Big Brown after thinking he was injured. The horse was not given steroids, which he was habitually given in previous races.
At the hearing, the sentiment for a steroid ban was strong. There was less of a consensus as to how a sport without an authoritative governing body can attain such a goal and enact other uniform standards.
Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, was among those not in favor of federal intervention.

After Frequent Horse Deaths, Jockey Fears Injury & Pulls Big Brown From Pack
After recent media attention surrounding Eight Bells' tragic death at the Kentucky Derby, Big Brown's jockeys couldn't afford to turn the other cheek on signs of injury at the Belmont Stakes.
After a shaky start and strange behavior from Big Brown, jockey Kent Desormeaux decided to pull Big Brown from the pack in the final stretch, conceding victory. This was a smart move on his behalf. The horse racing industry could not afford another lethal equine injury at such a publicized event.
Just a month ago, Eight Bells was was put down minutes after the race ON THE TRACK, shocking horse fans everywhere. She broke both ankles in her final sprint, giving way to Big Brown's win and his shot at the coveted Triple Crown title. Just last year, Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro broke his leg, and after a valiant medical effort, was later put down.
Desormeaux could have chosen a shot at horse racing's most respected title, but he chose to ride on the safe side. This was a smart choice for both, Big Brown and the horse racing industry.
"Did the death of the filly Eight Belles after the Kentucky Derby in any way prompt Desormeaux's action? - Reporter
"A Hall of Fame jockey such as Desormeaux rides hard to win, but his greatest instinct is to protect himself and his mount. He opted not to press on with a beaten horse who was showing signs of distress for reasons unknown." -Big Brown's Representative

This years celebration of Big Brown's amazing victory at the Kentucky Derby was overshadowed by the tragic death of the runner up. Eight Belles' death renews horse racing questions
As an avid equestrian and horse trainer, I was heart broken to watch the fall of Eight Bells. There is NO OTHER equine sport where horses become injured like this and at this rate. It tells you something is wrong.
While the race horse industry is monitoring for substance abuse and performance enhancers, hundreds of years breeding these magnificent animals to 'perfection' poses problems. Their hearts and muscles have been optimized for running, but their bodies are not meant to withstand the high impact of more than 1,200 pounds of muscle thundering down such a fragile bone structure. Breeding, over training and supplements are pushing these animals to limits beyond their bodies' capabilities. The 'Sport of Kings' is all about money, bragging rights, and 15 minutes of fame, all at the cost of the horse.
For centuries, horses have worked so hard for humanity and brought us (literally) where we are today... Isn't it time we gave something back to them? As an avid equestrian and horse trainer, I was heart broken to watch the fall of Eight Bells. There is NO OTHER equine sport where hor... more -
