World Press Photo interviews
I love this time of year, when the World Press Photo winners exhibition comes to Sydney. As a budding snapper myself, I look at this as not only inspiration to shoot better, but also a great example of how a picture can tell a thousand words.
This year, each photographer tells the story behind the pic in this great multimedia package. The overall winner, Tim Hetherington, captured an exhausted soldier in Afghanistan, wondering, as the shells burst around him, if he'd ever see his wife again.
Platon's portrait of Russian leader Vladimir Putin which you see here may not be as emotionally charged, but the story behind it is fascinating - a real insight into the man, and the world in which he lives.
I urge you to watch it if you have 10 minutes. I love this time of year, when the World Press Photo winners exhibition comes to Sydney. As a budding snapper myself, I look at this a... more -
The Lives Of Others
These photos where taken by Thomas Steinert in Leipzig. But not in the 50s or 60s - they are from the 80s. He said that he took them, so others could look at them with a bit of nostalgia one day and think "Look, we got over this". Video of the murder of a British journalist in Gaza released
James Miller was a Welsh filmmaker producing a documentary on the lives of Palestinian and Israeli children affected by the ongoing conflict. He was murdered during the filming of this scene. His film was posthumously released as the documentary "Death in Gaza."
The context of this scene is that the Israel Defense Forces are bulldozing nearby Palestinian homes, under which it claims are tunnels to smuggle weapons from Egypt. The bulldozers are accompanied by Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) equipped with night vision equipment. The film crew is wearing bulletproof vests and helmets.
In this scene, an APC has parked itself 100 meters away from the house without announcing any intentions. The rest of the scene is self-explanatory.
On May 9 2003, one week after Miller's death, the IDF announced that any foreign national wishing to enter Gaza will need to sign waivers absolving the IDF of any wrongdoing if they are killed or injured by Israeli forces.
The shooter has been identified by the IDF only as Lt. Haib, a Bedouin Arab. The Israeli Advocate General recommended he be disciplined for his actions, but he was acquitted by a commanding officer.
