Man jailed for attacks on gay men he met in chatrooms
A life sentence has been handed to a Swedish man for his brutal attacks against gay men.
Swedish website The Local reported that the 35-year-old was convicted of killing a man in his own home on December 28th 2007 and of the robbery and attempted murder of a 44-year-old man the day before. He was also convicted of robbing two men on the ninth and 15th of December, having finished a sentence in January 2007 for similar crimes.
The man met his victims through internet chat sites and gave the impression that he wanted to have sex with them, meeting them in their apartments in Stockholm.
His last victim died from knife wounds and a knife was used in the attempted murder. The victim received a number of threats and stab wounds, including one on the sole of his foot as he lay naked in bed with his hand tied behind his back. He also had his wallet, holding 900 kronor (around £75), stolen.
"All the victims were, or are, homosexual," said public prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad at the man's indictment hearing. "He has taken advantage of their sexual preferences and violated them."
Have you ever met someone in person that you'd 'met' on the internet? Did they tie you up, stab you in the foot and steal your wallet? (I hope not) Can it ever be safe to meet up with someone you 'met' online? Are minority groups particularly vulnerable in cases like this?

More than half a million people to Celebrate EuroPride
Tens of thousands of spectators from around the world are expected to attend this years EuroPride in Stockholm, making the city Europe's gay capital.
Having first held the festival ten years ago, the 'Swedish Sin, Breaking Borders' themed event is set to attract members of the LGBT community from across the world as it has now been extended to ten days.
"This year is 40 per cent larger than last year," parade coordinator Paul Turner told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, regarding the number of groups that have applied to take part in the colourful parade.
There will be gay choirs, teacher's unions, political parties, emergency services and even gay allotment gardeners.
Turner said the Swedish fire brigade would be at the parade for the first time.
The 2006 EuroPride parade in London attracted 500,000 spectators.
The festival's Swedish Sin, Breaking Borders theme focuses on international LGBT issues with guest speeches by Sweden's EU Affairs Minister Cecilia Malmstrom, Indian Prince Mavendra Singh Gohil and gender science professor Tiina Rosenberg.
The theme has two aims, said Jonah Nylund, president of Stockholm Pride.
One is to show pride over the progress made in Sweden for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders.
The other is to highlight the problems in the rest of the world, mainly in Eastern Europe where gay Pride events are banned and attacked time and time again.

Irish minister compares homosexuality to child abuse and paedophilia
A controversial Unionist politician has said she stands by her comparison of the sexual abuse of children to homosexual relationships.
Iris Robinson is the MP for Strangford, a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, chair of the Assembly's health committee and the new First Minister's wife.
She sparked outrage earlier this year when she offered to put gay men in touch with a psychiatrist who can make them straight.
Now it has emerged that during committee proceedings in the Commons last month, she told MPs:
"There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children.
"There must be sufficient confidence that the community has the best possible protection against such perverts."
When contacted by the Belfast Telegraph, Mrs Robinson reiterated her views and said she was following Scriptures.
"Can you think of anything more vile than man and man or woman and woman and sexually abusing children?" she told the Telegraph.
"What I say I base on biblical pronouncements, based on God’s word. I am amazed that people are surprised when I quote from scriptures. It shows the churches either aren’t preaching God’s word or are watering it down.
"I cannot think of anything more sickening than a child being abused. It is comparable to the act of homosexuality. I think they are all comparable. I feel totally repulsed by both."
Mrs Robinson told the Telegraph that she is "trying to reach out to people" as Christ instructed.
She then said that her comments were not made out of hate.
“We all have the opportunity to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ. Anything I say is out of love. I am not hate-mongering. I cannot leave my Christian values hanging at the door when I go into politics.
“I am speaking out more now because we are getting it more and more rammed down our throats that the minority views are more important than the majority views. I am not trying to alienate anyone. Anyone can come to me with any problems. I do not turn anyone away."
Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show last month, Mrs Robinson was asked to comment on a homophobic assault that took place in Newtownabbey.
Stephen Scott, 27, was attacked by a gang of youths and suffered head and leg injuries. The police are calling the incident homophobic in nature.
Mrs Robinson suggested that he should consider therapy to "cure" him of his homosexuality.
She condemned the attack on Mr Scott but added:
"I have a very lovely psychiatrist who works with me in my offices and his Christian background is that he tries to help homosexuals trying to turn away from what they are engaged in.
"And I have met people who have turned around to become heterosexual."
She also agreed that homosexuality is "disgusting, loathsome, nauseating, wicked and vile."
Police in Northern Ireland are investigating whether Mrs Robinson has committed any offence, such as incitement to hatred, after a string of complaints about her radio interview.
Sinn Fein, who are in coalition government with the DUP, have condemned her.
It's easy to condemn barbaric and backward regimes in far away countries, but did you know these kinds of ideas were so prevalent right here at home (outside the BNP, that is)? Should ministers with such hateful views be able to preach them so openly, and do they really represent the majority, as they claim to? If anti-hate legislation wasn't created to protect people from this kind of abuse then what is it there for?

Obama leads MCain by 46 points among LGBT adults
According to Harris Interactive, in a four-way race, Barack Obama leads John McCain among registered voters 44% to 35%, while Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate, and Ralph Nader each receive 2%. Sixteen percent of registered voters are not sure whom they will vote for yet.
Among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender adults, 60% favor Obama, while 14% favor McCain. Three percent of GLBT adults favor Barr, while 1% choose Nader. Six percent choose “other,” while 17% of all GLBT voters are not yet sure which candidate to support -- comparable to the percentage of undecided voters in the general population.
Among independents, Obama has a 12-point lead (38% to 26%), but one quarter of independents (25%) are not sure; 4% would vote for Bob Barr, and 3% for Ralph Nader.
The findings also show that 90% of African-Americans are voting for Obama, as are six in ten Hispanics. Whites, however, are leaning toward McCain over Senator Obama (40% versus 34%).
The results of this Harris Poll were compiled from 2,690 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive July 3–11.

75% of Americans say gays should serve openly in military
Seventy-five percent of Americans believe that gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve in the US military, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The Washington Post reported that the number of Americans who support gays in the military is up from 62% in 2001 and 44% in 1993.
Eighty percent of registered Democrats support the repeal of "don’t ask, don’t tell," a policy barring gay service men and women from serving openly in the military. Enacted 15 years ago under the Clinton administration, the push for the repeal of DADT is gaining momentum. The Post reported that support from Republicans has doubled from 32% to 64 percent since DADT was enacted.
The Post-ABC poll, conducted between July 10 and July 13, also showed that more than 80% of women support gays in the military, compared with approximately 67% of men.

2010 census won't count gay marriages
Although gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California, census officials say that same-sex partners in both states who list themselves as spouses will be recorded as "unmarried partners" -- just as they were in the 2000 census.
Census Bureau spokesman Stephen Buckner cited the Defense of Marriage Act, approved by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing as a marriage the union of anyone but a man and a woman.
The law "requires all federal agencies to recognize only opposite-sex marriages for the purposes of administering federal programs," Buckner wrote in an e-mailed statement. "Many of these programs rely on Census Bureau statistics."
Census officials have said the agency will retain same-sex spouses' original responses but will edit them for the published census tabulations.
Critics of the policy -- and the law -- say it ignores the changing legal and political landscape in states that contain about 14 percent of the U.S. population. And it ensures that the census results will be factually incorrect, they say. Although gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California, census officials say that same-sex partners in both states who list th... more -

Californians cleared to vote on same-sex marriage ban
The California Supreme Court has cleared the way for Californians to vote in November on whether to ban same-sex marriages in the state.
A gay couple is married in California in June. Voters could void same-sex marriages in the state in November. The court on Wednesday denied a petition to remove the initiative from the state's general election ballots. The unanimous decision was handed down without elaboration.
Hundreds of marriage licenses have been issued to same-sex couples since mid-June, a month after the court overturned the state's laws against such unions. However, on June 2, opponents of same-sex marriage filed for a ballot initiative that would ban such marriages in the state's constitution. Such a ban would overturn the court's May ruling.

Anti-Gay Alabama Attorney General Caught Being Gay
The Attorney General in question is Troy King, who, of course, is only interested in outlawing homosexuality and sex toys. His gay lover is either a college “buddy,” or a very young youngster and “Homecoming King” from Troy University. What are the odds of a dude named Troy King getting caught in bed with a Homecoming King from Troy University?
Rumors Swirl On Possible Alabama AG Troy King Gay Sex Scandal, Possible Resignation
The rumor mill in Montgomery is swirling of news of a potential resignation by Republican Attorney General Troy King, amid rumors that he was caught by his wife having sex with a male aide and subsequently banished from his home by his wife. King, a potential GOP frontrunner for Governor in 2010, succeeded Bill Pryor, one of George W. Bush’s most controversial judicial nominees. In addition, King was also an early endorser of John McCain.
A spokesperson for Alabama Governor Bob Riley denied that Attorney General Troy King is preparing to resign in the wake of a massive rumor campaign that has yet to be fully confirmed. The word is, according to multiple sources in Montgomery and elsewhere, that King was recently caught by his wife in a gay affair with a male aide and banished from his home.
According to Tara Hutchison in the executive office of the governor they have heard of no plans in the works for King’s resignation. She said she had not heard that he had been kicked out of his home because of a gay affair.
Governor Bob Riley’s press office refused to return multiple phone calls from this independent press outlet even though some sources accuse Riley of perpetrating the leak. The attorney general’s press office also declined to return phone calls seeking comment.
The Locust Fork News and Journal heard about this a couple of weeks ago from a Montgomery lawyer, and have had numerous contacts with people trying to confirm the truth of the rumor.
I just heard from a very reliable source that Troy Boy is resigning as Attorney General. No report of King’s official reason, but the unofficial reason almost certainly involves the rumors swirling around Montgomery that he was recently caught in embarassing misconduct. The resignation may be enough to keep King’s personal life out of the papers, but I don’t look for him to run for governor in 2010. California's LGBT community ditches wedding gifts for donations
Gays and lesbians marrying in California are ditching traditional wedding gifts and asking friends to contribute money to fight a ballot measure that would make their unions illegal.
A month after California began legally marrying same-sex partners, thousands of dollars that might have been spent on toasters or dinnerware for newlyweds have been donated to the campaign against the November referendum that seeks to define marriage in the state as only between a man and a woman.
"Most of the couples marrying have been together a very long time. They have already moved in together and some of them have kids together," said John Duran, president of Equality California.
"So the usual notion of a huge reception or acquiring your first microwave is not really happening. A lot of these couples are directing their family and friends to the wedding registry on our site to help us keep these marriages in place."
California's Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage in May, making the state the second after Massachusetts to allow gay weddings. Opponents hope to override the court's ruling by winning the November ballot.
Duran said the Equality California wedding registry Web site ( www.eqca.org ) had raised tens of thousands of dollars in the last three weeks to fight the marriage-definition measure.
Dozens of hotels, photographers and caterers serving the gay community have pledged to donate 10 percent to 50 percent of their proceeds to the campaign when their wedding services are used.

Gay History Month coming to British schools?
For the first time the LGBT History Month pre-launch will take place in a school, and will be attended by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, reports Pink News today.
While LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) History Month has attracted support from other government ministers and organisations such as the Crown Prosecution Service and the London Criminal Justice Board, it is the first time an education minister will attend the pre-launch.
"To have the pre-launch in a school which has consistently promoted LGBT History Month, and to have a minister from the Department of Children, Schools and Families speak, sends out a message to all students, teachers, parents, staff, heads, governors and Local Education Authorities that we are here to stay and we need to be seen and heard,” said Tony Fenwick, co-chair of Schools Out and LGBT History Month.
The fifth LGBT History Month is in February and the pre-launch is held to encourage local authorities, public and voluntary organisations, schools, universities, unions and individuals to organise their own events.
LGBT History Month was started by campaigning organisation Schools OUT.Founded and run by volunteers in the wake of the abolition of Section 28, it has grown each year.
This year's pre-launch will be held at Stoke Newington School in Hackney, one of the first to embrace LGBT History Month into its calendar. It has shared its pioneering ideas in a report on the LGBT History Month website.

Army acts to promote gay rights
The Army has joined forces with leading gay rights group Stonewall to promote tolerance within its ranks.
Head of the British Army General Sir Richard Dannatt said discrimination prevented the full contribution that is "vital for our success in operations". Stonewall said it had yet to set up an action plan, but that it would initially focus on recruitment and retention of military personnel. The Army is the 400th member of Stonewall's Diversity Champions programme, and the final branch of the military to join.
General Dannatt said: "One of the Army's six Core Values is 'Respect for Others' and it is therefore our absolute duty to treat our fellow soldiers as we would wish to be treated ourselves. Discrimination against those in the Army who are lesbian, gay and bisexual does not give them a chance to contribute or to play a full part in the teams that are vital for our success on operations."General Dannatt added that he looked forward to working with Stonewall, and that promoting tolerance was part of the trust that must exist between soldiers and their country.
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, said as with any other organisation it works with, it would agree a work-plan with the Army. He said this would include ways to encourage the recruitment and retention of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, provide support on how to deal with complaints of bullying, and hold training sessions for senior personnel. Mr Summerskill said: "In our view, there is no reason at all that in 10 or 15 or 20 years' time there shouldn't be openly gay personnel serving in the most senior ranks."

We Are Not Born Gay, Sweedish Twin study Shows
Identical twins develop when one fertilized egg separates into two individuals. As such, identical twins have nearly identical DNA. Researchers study the concordance of a trait in identical twins to see whether or not a trait is genetically-linked. In a concordant pair of twins, both show the same characteristic.
Twin studies that have been conducted to date actually demonstrate that homosexuality is not genetic. As Dr. Neil Whitehead notes, “In a nutshell, if you take pairs of identical twins in which one twin is homosexual, the identical co-twin is usually not homosexual. That means, given that identical twins are always genetically identical, homosexuality cannot be genetically dictated. No-one is born gay
In general, twin studies show that when one male identical twin is gay-identified, the other will be gay-identified one time in nine, or only 11% of the time. The percentages are similar for female homosexuality. If homosexual behavior, attractions and identity were completely genetic, the similarity would be closer to 100%. What this tells us is that same-sex attracted twins are not born that way. Thus, within a pair of identical twins – where one twin has same-sex attractions – the other will have opposite-sex attractions eight out of nine times.
So what about this 2008 Swedish twin study ?
The study of twins and homosexuality was touted in a press release as “the largest in the world so far.” The authors said that “more than 7,600 Swedish twins….responded to a 2005-2006 survey of health, behaviour, and sexuality.” I
In their analysis:
Only 7 pairs of male identical twins were found where both had any same-sex partner in their lifetime;
Only 26 pairs of female identical twins were found where both had any same-sex partner in their lifetime;
Only 64 pairs of identical male twins were found where only 1 of the pair had any same-sex partners;
And only 188 pairs of identical female twins were found where only 1 of the pair had any same-sex partners. (10)
Significantly, their data show a very low number of identical twin pairs who had both engaged in same-sex behaviors. The data also show a very low concordance rate (where both twins show the same trait) – less then 10% for the males and slightly over 12% for the females. Again, the study points to what we already know: there is a low concordance rate for homosexuality among identical twins, and the main factors in homosexuality are not genetic.

Children Raised by Homosexuals are 7 times more likely to be Gays or Bisexuals
This review is a survey of nine studies (click on the link for details)
Based on the average found in the following nine studies, 14% of children raised by homosexual parents develop homosexual or bisexual preferences. These studies reported rates of non-heterosexuality ranging from 8% to 21%. The most frequently reported percentages were 14% and 16% (two studies each). For comparison purposes, data from the best national surveys report that approximately 2% of the general population is non-heterosexual (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, and Michaels,1994). Therefore, if these percentages hold true in better designed studies, children raised by homosexuals appear to be about seven times more likely to develop homosexual or bisexual preferences than children raised by heterosexuals. And, as was explained earlier, 14% may be an under-estimate due to the young ages of many of the subjects in these studies.
