    • Chernobyl children's trips to Ireland banned by Belarussian Gov.

A thousand Irish families, who provide holidays for children whose health has been affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident, have been told that future trips have been banned.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is having talks with the Belarusian authorities to try to establish why the ban has been imposed and to see if it can be lifted.

The travel ban which initially applied to the US has now been extended worldwide - although the Government in Italy has made a special agreement with Belarus to allow holiday visits to continue there.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the situation and embassy staff in Moscow are in discussions with the Belarusian authorities to try to establish why the ban has been announced and to see if it can be lifted.

Chernobyl Children's Project CEO Adi Roche described the announcement by the Government of Belarus as 'shocking news'.

Ms Roche who is to meet minister Minister Martin Cullen on Monday says failure to have the issue resolved would be a disaster for the children.

She told RTÉ News that the twice yearly trips to Ireland were vitally important for the children's health and also allowed them to visit medical specialists and receive treatment.

She has appealed to the Irish Government to work to have the ban reversed.

    • Hemp used to remove Chernobyl contaminants

In 1998, Phytotech, along with Consolidated Growers and Processors (CGP) and the Ukraine's Institute of Bast Crops, planted industrial hemp, Cannabis sp., for the purpose of removing contaminants near the Chernobyl site. Cannabis is in the Cannabidaceae family and is valuable for its fiber, which is used in ropes and other products. This industrial variety of hemp, incidentally, has only trace amounts of THC, the chemical that produces the "high" in a plant of the same genus commonly known as marijuana.

Overall, phytoremediation has great potential for cleaning up toxic metals, pesticides, solvents, gasoline, and explosives. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more than 30,000 sites in the United States alone require hazardous waste treatment. Restoring these areas and their soil, as well as disposing of the wastes, are costly projects, but the costs are expected to be reduced drastically if plants provide the phytoremediation results everyone is hoping for.

    • Nuclear No Border

Anything we can say about the subject Nuclear interested in fact all humanity, the whole planet earth.
We are all on board a ship called Earth, which leads us through wonderful trips around the sun… the number of these trips depends largely on us.
The size of this ship is, in terms of Euclidean geometry, limited .. hence the problem of storage of nuclear assumes that this ship calls somewhere as if you could travel out of the orbit. So we are wandering without target ...
Nuclear power can not be a problem only if we speak of IRAN ... the problem of nuclear energy must be considered beyond the borders, concerns humanity, faced with tragedies that brought the figure of the enemy is cancelled ....
... Be necessary constitute, or refine the AJA, a court for recognition of crimes against humanity pollution to environmental heritage.

    • Chernobyl Remembered - 20 years has passed

Bells tolled, sirens blared and mourners bearing candles commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster....

The explosion that ripped through Reactor no. 4 two decades ago ripped the roof off the reactor block and a cloud of radiation -- many times that released by the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 -- resulted in 10 days of fallout across 200,000 square kilometers of the Soviet Union and Europe. One worker was killed instantly, his body never found, and at least 29 rescue workers and plant workers died subsequently of radiation poisoning. The exact death toll from the disaster remains a matter of controversy, with the World Health Organization saying the ultimate death toll will be as low as 9,300 while Greenpeace recently claimed that as many as 93,000 lives will be lost as a direct result of the disaster and diseases -- especially thyroid cancer -- caused by radiation.

    • US Admits to Sending Nuclear Parts to Taiwan..Whoops

The United States military this past week admitted that, "fuses designed for use on intercontinental ballistic missiles were mistakenly shipped to Taiwan in 2006." This comes on the heels that in September 2007, a b-52 bomber flew 2000 miles over the United States with six armed nuclear warheads, weapons in which the pilots and military did not know were turned on. The U.S. is investigating, but I wonder how and why these "accidents" are happening in the first place....and these are just the ones we are finding out about. • Nuclear Britain

Private energy companies in Britain have been given the go-ahead to invest in new nuclear reactors, which could make the UK one of the world's leading nuclear energy users. This has environmental campaigners in a fury over what they see is a "dangerous and foolhardy decision."

Ben Ayliffe, senior nuclear campaigner at Greenpeace, said "Nuclear is yesterday's technology," he said. "We can tackle climate change and energy problems by using renewables and energy efficiency."

I must say I agree with Ayliffe and the environmentalists. I don't understand how a government can ignore the massive amounts of lethal radioactive waste that comes from producing nuclear energy on account of such small benefit. I'm no nuclear scientist, or government official, or environmentalist. But I do live here, and I do have enough common sense to say that the costs greatly outweigh the benefits of restoring the nuclear energy industry here and that it shouldn't happen. What's wrong with wind power???

    • Nothing good about it!

When Chernobyl's Number Four reactor blew up in April 1986, spewing radioactive fallout across Belarus, workers quickly slapped a giant concrete sarcophagus over the site to contain the hazard. It was supposed to be a temporary fix.

    • NO NUKES

Do you think NUCLEAR POWER is the solution to GLOBAL WARMING?

--Currently the US has 103 Nuclear Reactors, providing almost 20% of our electricity.
--On September 11th, 2001, American Airlines flight 11 flew over Indian Point nuclear reactor, en route to the World Trade Center.
--20 million people could have been contaminated with deadly radiation and thousands of square miles lost forever.
--MIT concluded that a minimum of 1,500 new reactors would be needed globally to offset coal carbon emissions.
--"The next Chernobyl may be Chernobyl itself"
--Even now, Chernobyl's damaged nuclear reactor is leaking lethal doses of radiation,

--------------and there is no safe way to dispose of nuclear waste.

Now, consider that a 100 square mile solar farm could power the entire United States.

      And then........

      THINK AGAIN ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER!
