Sisters bicycled from Seattle to San Francisco to raise money.
While some peeps complain about distances and gas prices, other go the distance and raise a little money in between.
WASHINGTON. Friday Harbor High School graduates Amber and Kelsea Peterman bicycled from Seattle to San Francisco to raise money for – and awareness of – women’s health issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
The ride was called the Bike to End Fistula.
“Fistula is a childbirth injury from prolonged labor and lack of delivery services which occurs mostly in Africa and the Middle East,” Kelsea explained.
**Why we are doing it:
Chances are if you know us or received an email, you may have heard of gynecological fistula--an injury most commonly associated with prolonged labor which leaves women incontinent (and thus dribbling urine or feces for the remainder of her life, vesicovaginal or rectovaginal fistula). Virtually unheard of in the developed world, over 3 million women are estimated to be living with untreated fistula in developing countries and an additional 30,000 to 100,000 develop cases each year on the African subcontinent alone. Women with fistula are often ostracized, forced out of their homes and communities because they are unable to work and bear children.

Muslim community raises $125,000 for Hospital
A fundraiser hosted by the Muslim community has raised $125 G for the York Central Hospital, well-above the goal to raise $150G over a 5 year span for a blood bank analyser system.
In all, $125,000 was raised by SHIFA (Arabic for “cure”).
“The commitment of $30,000 per year was exceeded significantly by a quantum leap,” Naim Malik, event co-chairperson said.
About 400 guests attended the Thornhill’s Le Parc banquet hall Friday night, for an inaugural hospital fundraiser, hosted by the local Muslim community. Among the attendees were Mayor Dave Barrow, members of council & Pakistan’s consul general, Tassadaq Hussain. The event which included multi-cultural entertainment was led by Mr. Malik and Nancy Coxford, chairperson of the York Central Hospital Foundation.

John McCain may have understated average campaign contributions by 260%
Summary from wikileaks.org:
"John McCcain may have understated his per-contributor average by nearly three times, or 63% of contributions.
In 2007 the John McCain team claimed a per-contributor fundraising average of $138. Inorder to bolster the perceptions of grass roots backing it is politically strategic to have the average as low as possible while keeping the total as high as possible. However a simple calculation shows that the average raised is $358--almost three times the average claimed in McCain's press release.
McCain may have concealed 63% the funds raised from the average, by excluding (without note) "in kind" contributions. In kind contributions are typically given by corporations and can include items such as the use of corporate jets, or free work by advertisers.
Whether this is 'standard practice' among campaign contribution reports is unknown, however the practice does seem to be misleading."

Obama + Dean + $100 Million in June = Massive GOP Losses
Now that Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic Nomination, his campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will begin working closely together. In fact, the Obama Campaign is already taking on some of the DNC’s usual functions.
What is exciting about this new alliance is that Howard Dean, as chair of the DNC, and Barack Obama are now on the same team. The two most groundbreaking internet fund-raisers the political world has ever seen are going to be working side-by-side with their 50-state strategy in place, which Dean employed to win back Congress for the Democrats back in 2006.
The influx of cash to Obama’s campaign is going to be incredible. Some are estimating that Obama may even bring in $100 million this month. To put that in perspective, George W. Bush’s record-breaking fund-raising effort in the 2000 election cycle brought in $303 million, and that was over a full, two-year period.
Barack Obama has already almost reached that number at this point in his campaign and we’re just now beginning the General Election. He sits at $265 million raised, nearly three times the total John McCain has raised thus far.
What will this gap in cash flow mean for the two candidates?

Burma: It Can't Wait and the U.S. Campaign for Burma
Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, Judd Apatow, Eva Longoria Parker, Sheryl Crow and others have joined together to produce a 30 day series of public service announcements at Burma: It Can't Wait http://burmaitcantwait.org/burmaitcantwait/. The website is aimed at promoting the U.S. Campaign for Burma. The fund raiser has been going on all month but I think that you can still help if you're interested.
From the U.S. Campaign for Burma website:
The United States Campaign for Burma is a U.S.-based membership organization dedicated to empowering grassroots activists around the world to bring about an end to the military dictatorship in Burma. Through public education, leadership development initiatives, conferences, and advocacy campaigns at local, national and international levels, USCB works to empower Americans and Burmese dissidents-in-exile to promote freedom, democracy, and human rights in Burma and raise awareness about the egregious human rights violations committed by Burma’s military regime.
The leadership of USCB is comprised of seasoned human rights advocates, with experience both inside and outside the U.S. government. The board and staff, which include former Congressional staff, former Burmese political prisoners, and experienced advocates, are dedicated to increasing the profile of Burma and seeking solutions to the country’s decades-long conflict. The core strength of USCB — individual members, community chapters, student chapters, and affiliates across the United States — is Americans and Burmese dissidents-in-exile.

BuildBurma.org raises money for victims
From a note from filmmaker Smriti Mundra:
My friends Shruti Ganguly and Riddhika Jesrani have put together a fundraising organization called Build Burma in response to the recent disaster in Myanmar. They have a $10,000 fundraising target on behalf of Doctors Without Borders, a reputable aide organization with an infrastructure in Myanmar (read: the money goes directly to disaster relief, not a corrupt goverment or NGO). I sincerely hope you will all donate even $10 to the cause. There are 561 of you on this list so if everyone donates we will be more than half way to our goal. Just go to www.buildburma.org and follow the prompts.
To read more about the situation in Myanmar or show support, join the Facebook group (search BuildBurma.org) and check out the website.
Well, a lot more than 561 folks here, folks, so let's see if we can help. I just did my part and make a small donation - your turn, everyone. From a note from filmmaker Smriti Mundra: ... more -
